- As a couple finds themselves drifting apart they leave gaps for more than just silence, turning a healing weekend away into a horror of mistrust and fear.
- Haunted by a previous, unspoken trauma that has fissured their relationship, Emily and Peter are heading away for the weekend to try and reconnect with each other - away from family, friends and their only child, Archie.
As they drive deeper and deeper into the country, getting lost along the way, they eventually end up at an isolated cottage in the middle of nowhere. It's late and there's nowhere else to go. They are staying here whether they like it or not.
Immediately the house and the surrounding landscape begins to exert its eerie influence on the couple.
While trying to make the best of this strange situation, Emily, still feeling a great distance from Peter, watches as he disappears while on a hike, returning with the claim that he has been seeing people that she cannot. This is followed by the discovery of bundles of letters from a strange girl called Lizzie which block the stove, the faintly heard sounds of children, the scampering of feet, and the feeling that they might not be alone.
While out on what is supposed to be a romantic meal, and prompted by the strange events that are swirling around them, Emily confesses to the secret behind the trauma she suffered and the consequences that this might have for herself, Peter and their son Archie.
The schism complete, the next morning Emily leaves.the cottage to go and find the local handyman to help fix the blocked stove, but really herself and Peter now just need to be alone. While Peter rings Archie, at the bar where Emily finds the handyman, she discovers the truth behind Lizzie and the letters.
As Peter gets drawn outside by sounds of Lizzie's laughter, eventually finding her hiding in the tunnel of a small stream, Emily begins to worry as the story the handyman tells her gets worse and worse. Rushing back to the house to check on Peter, she finds out too late that Lizzie has just been toying with the both of them.
