Adequate racing movie from The Asylum
mikemdp28 January 2012
Pros:

-- Story's uninspired, but not so bad. Same goes for cinematography and direction.

-- Lead actor playing "Johnny" is trying so hard to be Brad Pitt, it's almost charming. You'll find yourself saying, "Aww, look at the guy trying to be Brad Pitt…"

-- I love this guy "Red," the auto junkyard owner who trains Johnny in racing. He's so authentically and simultaneously grizzled and whimsical, you'll think he's the child of an unholy union between Nick Nolte and Michael J. Pollard.

-- The actor who plays rival racer "Mickey Stiles" is obviously coked up throughout the whole movie. No one's that good an actor. But it works. Keep this actor on coke. (BTW, IMDb says he's the freakin' voice of "Putt Putt" from my kids' video games!)

Cons:

-- The racing scenes are so obviously shot in fast motion you'll half expect Boots Randolph's "Yakety Sax" to be playing in the background.

-- But you won't hear "Yakety Sax" because the same nondescript hip-hop song, which consists of nobody rappers yelling, "WHAT AROUND HERE!" over and over, underscores every race. As if it means something. But it doesn't.

-- Daniel's father and sister are obviously somebody's relatives or friends. Actors this bad and ugly don't get cast without knowing a producer or somebody.

-- Helicopter turn-by-turn in the last race comes out of nowhere with no explanation, while the view from helicopter shows no race at all, just some highway traffic. Who are they? Radio traffic reporters? Cops? And why do they talk like surfer dudes?

-- Final, climactic racing scene comes and goes so quickly, you won't even realize it, because it consists almost entirely of close-ups of drivers yelling, "Come on! Come on!"

-- Bad guy parole officer is so suitable a dou©ebag that you want him to really get it at the end. But when it finally happens, you won't stop laughing. Really, hours later, you won't stop laughing.

Final verdict: I bought "Street Racer" for a buck from a Blockbuster that was going out of business, knowing full well that stocking movies like this helped put Blockbuster out of business. It was worth a buck and 90 minutes of my time. It will be on a blanket in my driveway at my next tag sale.

Good for a time waste
Achylles3 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Despite having spoilers, they don't tell exactly what happens in the movie so if you read this you won't be made to lose interest in the movie itself so I recommend that you read the review before watching the movie.

Yet you might have seen many racing movies about decent cars, hot chicks and illegal street races and this is another movie similar to F&F. Just films like this have been inspired by the Fast and the Furious franchise. This movie is not so bad as described but is a non-good mock buster. First of all the idea of the movie was very good, a racer has a car accident during an illegal race and hurts an innocent human and then he pays about that while getting involved in the racing life again. But the idea had not been accomplished well at all.

At first, the shooting of the scenes is so awful that I could not understand what actually happened in the beginning - did the character die or he was just stunned. The racing scenes are so unclear that you wouldn't understand how are the things going on. I also noticed that the camera views switch so fast that this would also make you not understand what's happening and you lose interest in the movie. This disbands the adrenaline which should come inside you, just because this is literally an action movie.

The acting is not bad but not good because sometimes the spectator could visibly notice the play of the actors but not the seriousness of the characters inside the movie. Clint Browning, who actually plays the main character didn't do bad job and acted fairly tolerable. The other actors were also not bad but Connor Clayton, who played the invalid boy was awful. I do apologize about my exposure of dysphemismic criticism but he looked like Justin Bieber and was a sort of unbearable and I couldn't stand him, he firstly acts awful and secondly he acts like some twink. I completely liked the play of Robert Pike Daniel who played as Red, an old ex-drunk who lost his son due to cancer and started having business with cars so the acting of this actor made me love his character most.

The plot and even the writing are plain, predictable and incomplete though the idea about them is awesome and potential. The plot could be breath-taking but every detail about the it is incomplete. There could have been put some dramatic moments about the boy and if a good actor had played it, the movie would have become strong and it's rating would be sky high as because people love dramas.

The writing is bad. The main thing making it awful is the overuse of profanity. Everyone is just saying "F*CK" or "SH*T" just for no reason even about the tiniest problem as if they are whining about everything. The moment when Johnny says to Red "I have no choice" I literally reminded myself the movie Saw, whose counsel is that people must appreciate their lives and always have choices, and I immediately predicted the next reply of the writing when Red says "There is always choice..." and I was pleasantly satisfied but that's just myself.

The cars are very poor for the movie year but they were not as bad as to be awful considering the fact that the movie has low budget. The performance and the special effects are again on the average, not so good and visibly not bad. The music is amazingly and surprisingly good. The racing scenes were bad but I liked a lot the carting racing which was my favorite part of the movie.

Overall the movie is completely incomplete though it's idea was very good and potential. All details were not well made but it's good for a time waste.

Plot - predictable, plain, but the idea about it has a big potential though it is badly made. 3/10

Acting - average, I mostly liked Robert Pike Daniel's play. 5/10

Writing - very plain ,big, pointless overuse of profanity. 3/10

Performance - Poor cars for the film's year, averagely good action scenes but bad races and completely awful camera shooting. 2/10

Music - very good and proper, just imperfect. 8/10

A FAST PACED TRIP down memory lane towards the kind of films that put Blockbuster out of busniess
daniel-mannouch9 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Street Racer is a Speed Racer rip off in name, but a fast and furious clone in all other aspects from the nu-metal and L.A hip hop soundtrack to the strikingly similar looking Paul Walker stand-in protagonist.

Unfortunately, Street Racer, like near all Asylum films that I have seen, is neither exploitative enough to be stupefyingly mesmerising, inept enough to be a content goldmine, or in any which way enough of a spectacle to be a worthwhile watch. Sherlock Holmes remains still to be the sole exception to the rule as it becomes depressingly clear, depressingly quickly, that Street Racer is another lifetime movie with delusions of blockbusting and has no interest whatsoever of any deviation. The most hilarious moments come in every single scene involving a speeding vehicle as the editing style of the Fast and the Furious films is 'homaged' on a shoe string rather than the near limitless resources of a studio editing department. It was a doleful reminder for me of the now near four decade monopoly of the big six, soon to be big five, film studios whose insipid, accountant lead philosophy has spread like a cancer to every single corner of the industry worldwide.

Street Racer has some decent storytelling that i begrudgingly admit. Some character actors in the supporting cast does a good job in giving their scenes gravitas. However, the drama stops there as the rest of the film drowns out this good will with the kind of sentimental gush that permeated every other youth-marketed film of the time. An after school special masquerading as escapism. I puke.

The Asylum is an exploitation film production house that plays it safe to an insufferable degree and Street Racer is their atypical product. It is toothless, digital video schlock with no exploitation elements to hold interest and way too much investment in it's lacklustre, mirth enduringly moralistic screenplay.

DVD cover lies, Horrible acting, not worth it. ( not really any spoilers in comments )
gmano-dark28 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
First off, this cover shows a Ford Mustang, and looks like a 350z. Neither cars seemed to be in there. It is very obvious this is a low production film. I'm not saying that low production films are bad though, however if the movies about flashy fast race cars, the producers gotta spend some money. The most expensive car in there would probably be between a Honda or Subaru. Acting was horrible, cars were cheap, the race scenes lacked what at least fast and the furious had. The whole showing the driver, then showing them press the clutch and shifting gears, yeah they screwed up on that. This is where my "spoiler" comes in.. at the last "race", there's this narration of the race which is ridiculous, it's suppose to be a police officer in a helicopter? i guess, but it just sounds like horrible teens that don't know what they're talking about. Races are about 30-45 seconds each, normally I would assume the circuit takes at least a minute per a lap. Everything just wasn't done right, just re-watch one of the fast and the furious movies instead of renting/buying this movie.

ppppfffffftttttt.....this is so bad

Warning: Spoilers
Accidentally rented this movie being a car fanatic. And gawd this movie was soooooo horrible. I had to pry my eyes open with my fingers to try watch it.

i mean how did he turn a beat up bugeye wrx into a 2006 hawk eye sti? and how could u possibly find parts in a junk yard, tune it and do massive body work on it within a week? Bloody ridiculous. He must have the hands of god. even chip foose from over haulin cant make a car that fast.

The acting is so nursery school. They all looked as though they were constipated.

so many car shows going on in the state of California and yet they cant even find better cars to show in the movie. Best car ever in there was the R33 skyline but it only appeared in the last scene and was not even raced in properly cuz they were so afraid to scratch it.

The Worst Low Budget Film Ever!!
mrg6712 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
First of all; Why put a 2009 Nissan GTR on the cover, when a MID 90s model was used in the film. The actors/actresses were horrible, I didn't even recognize any of them...perhaps they are all beginners!! The Cars used in this film were whacked, and the races were poorly put together. The races looked slow, and why the hell would you race a SCION XB(with hubcaps) and a old 5series BMW(looked plain). At least make the cars look beefed up, put some after-market rims on them. Everything just looked awful, and poorly directed. The story is just plain out weird and disorganized. I think that the only plus side to this movie, is the hot actress....But thats all I can say good about this film.....I would never recommend this film to anyone, unless they've never watched television before.....

Couldn't believe it but damn....
fred12345-230 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Wow, i just happened to check out the movie Street Racer, and i must admit that i did not have very high expectations, but even these were not met. YOu only need a few words to sum up this movie: An awful Fast and Furious rip, cant they think up some new stories? And to top it off, it was so obvious from minute one what is gonna happen and how the movie will end. I don't even want to touch upon the fact that the acting could not have been any worse, some scenes were alright, but mostly crap.

THe worst part has yet to come. THe actors were not only bad, but the plot and the actions that the actors took are more than idiotic and the end of the movie, made the impression that even the cast and the screenwriter, did not want to finish this well below average movie.

Spoiler: THe antagonist got killed through an accident, unplanned and out of nowhere, thats how the story ends, and if i still haven't convinced you that this film is not viewable, then go ahead and watch, but don't forget to write a user comment. THis film deserves noones money and should establish the point that Hollywood movies have become more than just bad and repetitive, they have partly become a laughing stock. I mean how can they expect to copy older movies and get away with it. I miss a meaning and a morale and a movie with turns and twist that one can not see coming. Hope it helped ^^

An insulting low budget after school special.
timb755 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was horrible. The voice acting sounded dubbed. The sound effects were completely fake. The graphics are way off. For example wrecked cars are reused later in working order. The Montero in the beginning of the film is obviously swapped right before the crash scene. It even looked like it was poorly spray painted to match the paint. Plus the back window was broken, the hood is all popped up and the bumpers are missing before the Mazda even hit it. Oh and that Mazda I was just talking about. It was reused after hitting the Montero. The bar scene after Johnny meets up with the mechanic at the salvage yard. As it's panning the lot there is the same exact car sitting in the lot with some guy standing in front of it. Coincidence? IT HAS THE SAME FRONT PLATES! 5yhf498, Match them up with the first racing scene and the lot. Also the Yellow S2000 hit the corrupt guy black-nailing Johnny, you see the same car 3 seconds later undamaged, parked, with the driver running over to get in it. He just hit a guy racing and now he's suddenly not in the car with it parked undamaged? I don't know if the director thinks your stupid or what but I find this down right insulting. Not even changing the plate? It's 2 screws! The story was unbelievable and not in the good sense of the word. The movie does show the dangers of street racing and corruptions at the highest level but the movie is so poorly done it's insulting. I felt like I was watching a low budget after school special. Preachy, preachy, unexciting, preachy, preachy. That's how this movie goes. I've yet to see a street racer movie that was above a 7 but this is not even close to that ball park. This is easily the only movie you'll ever see with a new release sticker in the $.99 bin. I did find some of the chop shop owner's one liners funny but that's about it. Still, stay away from this extremely poorly made movie.

Waste of time!
vehicle_410 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
First off, I rent every car movie that comes out because I love cars. But this film has changed my whole outlook on what people think is acceptable as a car flick. This film was terrible from the cars they chose to the dialog they spoke. It was predictable all the way to the end. Except for the very end when ***SPOILER*** the cop comes at them with a gun for no reason and gets hit by the car. They had no need to put that in unless they felt that someone just HAD to die.

***MORE SPOILERS*** The cars they used were all stock and couldn't even be considered "race" cars by any means. It would have made the movie that much better if they had at least tried to find some cars that were modified for racing. It wouldn't of even cost them any money. You can look on car forums and find hundreds of people with modified cars that would be more than willing to get their car feature in a film.

The dialog was so predictable. It seemed as though the actors were stalling their words, like they were forgetting their lines and trying their hardest to remember.

Do not listen to TOYBIRD! This is One of the Worst Racing movies
tonykhauv27 January 2009
OK first of all, users like "toybird" ruin this site... Is he like some guy that took part in the production of the movie? You cant be serious to give this movie a 10 star...heres why Acting: HORRIBLE. Enough said..

Quality: Dialogue is terrible. The Race scenes aren't even fully played through. All the races are basically cut up scenes of a short race and pasted together to form a full race.

Story: Lame story. something that you can tell only took a few weeks to write.

Authenticity: The racing was really fake. An Xb CANNOT in anyway beat a Bimmer.

Take my advice and save the couple bucks and rent a different movie..

Greatest Street Racing Movie EVAR!!!!
toybird27 May 2008
Oh man....it was clear from the get go, that this is one top-notch film...both the acting and the quality of the film itself was Oscar-worthy!!! What a great racing movie! One can only give this fine piece of cinematic gold the respect it rightly deserves...being a car enthusiast myself, I watched this movie's several street races, and judging by the uber-realistic sound loops and the fact that a Scion xB could EASILY outrun an M5 engine-swapped BMW...I can only say that the realism was astounding. The acting...superb. These no-name actors give the performance of a lifetime! It seems as if they are dubbed over, speaking in a giant echo tunnel, and it gives the movie that magical B-movie feeling I was looking for!!! Anyways...be sure to rent this one for SURE, especially if you're a tried and true street racer type like me! Also don't forget to stab yourself in the eye after watching this fine piece of work, because you won't want to watch ANYTHING ELSE as long as you live!

A Classic Theme with Some CLASSY CARS !
guestar5728 May 2008
STREET RACER www.theasylum.cc Starring : Dustin Fitzsimons & Clint Browning.

This movie seems almost like a classic western scenario," The troubled bad guy makes a mistake and others have to pay his debt and after much effort he makes amends."

The car chases are good, Some things called SHIFTERS (seem like souped up go-karts) are better .

Couple of the actors stand out, Fitzsimons is exceptional-So real in part and journey man skills beyond his years.

Character actors have always been the strength of ANY film, Robert Pike Daniel has a " Wilford Brimley" like panache to his craft, Wish I knew a mentor like him learning to drive. To sum up, STREET RACER besides its "Almost similar title" is a good time on DVD for end.

fans of cars, racing and a REAL story that will having you cheering the hero and

clapping at the villain in the

I laughed throughout this movie
roger-tee30 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I love car movies, and usually no matter how bad they are, they are usually fun to watch. But being the gear head that i am, I just REALLY couldn't stop laughing, a lot of the scenes were just so ridiculous that you just HAVE to see it to believe how crappy it is. One thing i have to admit is that the dude that plays red is the worst actor i've ever seen, he talks like he forgot his lines and has to pause to think about it.

The Main characters "hooked up" wrx, was just an STi with stickers all over it, and aside from that injen intake, had no modifications, not even body work. And all those cars that they showed at the beginning, NONE of them had more horsepower than a Nissan Altima, and is just completely laughable. especially that guy with the scion xb.

even though it kinda sucked, i really think gear heads would get a laugh at this movie, especially the moronic technical stuff.

I thought this was a joke
spectacular-219 April 2015
I cannot say anything good about this movie. This is by far the worst acting I have ever seen in a movie. and i saw many bad movies.

I saw it at a local television and at first I thought it was some kind of a joke. The ''dramatic'' scenes are written (and acted of course) so poorly that I immediately IMDb-ed the movie to see is it this even on internet. The scenes in the office, at home, yelling, insulting, emotions, pep talk...they didn't act a single thing good enough to make it believable. Racing scenes...funny. I really did laugh a lot in the end. So it wasn't a complete waste of time.

In the end, I hope actors got better afterward and are smart enough not to put this movie in their CV.

Worst. "Car". Movie. Ever.
htkarp18 February 2014
First, let me start out by sharing my disappointment with IMDb not allowing us to vote with negative numbers; as I would have applied the lowest one available to this epic waste of bytes and polycarbonate!

Secondly, and as a true form of a Public Service Announcement, I will attempt to save my fellow man - or woman - from wasting 85 minutes of their lives via a concise review of this 'video cat box treasure' mistakenly offered as "entertainment". With that said...

  • Acting: Horrific (Think about the last time you saw a fifth grade school play... and this is worse)

  • Plot: At best, contrived - At worst, unbelievable

  • Directing: Missing / non-existent

  • Writing / dialog: PAINFUL

  • Editing: Amateurish (and I apologize to all amateur film editors everywhere!)

While this "film" may not be thee worst movie ever made, it would certainly make ANY top ten list. Do not waste your time and / or money.

And, to anyone reading reviews prior to watching / renting this 'digital dirty diaper', please do NOT be misled by anyone offering up more than one or two stars; this movie SUCKS!

Worst. Car. Movie. EVER.

Absolutely retarded.. The makers need to be punched in the throat and then pushed into oncoming traffic
kevraz-512-6327326 October 2012
The only thing i have to say other than this movie being the(hands down) worst movie i've ever seen, and sad to say ill never get this hour and odd minutes of my life back...

Apart from that, LMFAO to the douche bag who says "I don't race ricers" trying to imply it to a "m5 swapped" 525i as he's leaning on a bright yellow HONDA S2k.. F*CKING TOOL

The writers should have really done some more research into what they were trying to make a movie about. I couldn't even imagine what drugs someone was on to approve the script for this movie.

The only positive thing/good thing about this movie were the blue Supra and the red Skyline at the end.. I'm surprised i didn't see them cast a Daewoo Lanos into that jalopy of cars..

A total joke to car culture.
forzaeva8 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"Plot" looks like it was written on one napkin while under the influence.

The poorly edited fragments chopped, cut, copied and pasted together to look like a semblance of a "race" are 'nickling-and-diming' budget MTV meets poor man's 'NFS' rip-off in a nutshell. And even that might be too generous...

The protagonist prepares for a final "street race" by going go-karting under "Red's" supervision... Right.... Ehhm...

Ah, but they manage to drum up an Impreza vs. Skyline for the bells and whistles... Two alright cars in an another just as poorly-as-previous edited farce of a "race". So that's that.

Other ridiculous movies like, say, 'Redline' (the one with Angus MacFadyen and Eddie Griffin) of this genre at least managed for the most part to get the racing scenes done in an entertaining way... 'Street Racer' is just trite at best.

I'll end this with another reviewer's observation : Protagonist shows up in an "M-swapped" BMW. Bad guy shows up in a Honda S2000. Bad guy says : "I don't race ricers"... Priceless.

That sums up the car know-how of the makers and producers of this beyond steaming pile... Also written on one napkin during a hangover.

Ay Karumba!
TheLittleSongbird14 September 2012
Watching Street Racer with an open mind and fairly low expectations I still found the film to be terrible in all regards. You may think that considering it's The Asylum that you know it's going to be so, but at the same time you are curious to see if any of their movies are watchable. So far of the twenty or so I've seen(so far, yeah I know but there's something compulsive about the awfulness of these movies), none of them have been, and Street Racer is no exception. While not quite bottom 5- Alien Origin, Titanic II, 2010: Moby Dick, AVH: Alien vs. Hunter and Transmorphers- it is a contender for bottom 10. The lead actor Clint Browning actually tries his best and is decent, but the rest of the acting, especially from Connor Clayton, is awful, full of over-acting or phoning in. The characters and script do nothing in their favour this said, the characters are annoying cardboard cut-outs and the script is unbearably stilted and goes well overboard with the profanity. The story is blandly and predictably told, with a stupid death scene for the villain, characters, props and plot points cropping up and disappearing with no explanation and a very rushed ending. The races have no excitement or drive to them and are further disadvantaged by extremely amateurish editing and camera work. I couldn't even appreciate the car models, which didn't even look that expensive anyway, because of this. The music is nothing special coming across as generic and forgettable. Overall, a film about cars with nothing new or exciting. 1/10 Bethany Cox

Fun Bad Movie with Charm
Dark_Lord_Mark7 February 2016
THis is a GOOD BAD MOVIE. This is the definition of it.

It's so bad it's good.

This movie was bad but with some charm in it.

Yes it has bad acting, poor dialogue and a low budget. But turn your brain off and it is not un-watchable.

It is quick moving, never boring and while clichéd and adds nothing new, the bad acting and poor acting makes it a fun watch.

It's Asylum movie, but it is also entertaining and if you love cars, and like RIFFS, this movie is for you.

I give it a 5 out of 10.

Pretty Good!
breezybreezy6 June 2008
I don't know why there is so much hate on here for this movie. It IS low-budget, but I thought they did a really nice job with what they had! Actors/directors/screenwriters have to start somewhere, and I thought they did a great job with this movie.

The actors were believable, and the plot was interesting. I say it's worth the money to check it out!! I especially thought the main guy (Clint Browning, I think) was really good in the movie. He did a good job with what he was given here.

If you want a high-budget movie, get a big-budget movie.

If you are in the mood for a fun movie about street racing, then check this one out!

Good movie! Much better than I expected
miss-is-witch31 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I don't understand why it does have such a low review. Probably because people (including myself) expected more images with the cars doing tricks, passing by each other more and also more dangerously. Indeed the movie didn't have so many 8 year old effects, but it sent some strong messages; it showed clearly what happens if you're not careful while driving and how you can mess up someones life; it also touched the subject of corruption; it showed this very realistic. I also liked the "preaches" of the old man Johnny was working for. ..oh, and did I mention I felt for the character played by Clint Browning in this movie. Johnny rulezzzz (especially in Clint's body uuuh!!)

Buckle your seat belts for a wild ride!
buttyfrench5 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
First, let me say that I professionally street raced for over 9 years before having a bad crash, killing a family of 4 in a minivan. So, I know this world like the back of my racing glove and can vouch that the writer and director have nailed it PERFECTLY. The acting is spot-on. Clint Browning has James Dean'ish good looks and oozes that Rebel Without a Cause angst which was integral to his role. The chicks are hot, and I mean HOT (in ALL uppercase if you know what I mean...). The cars and racing racing sequences are first rate. Tom Lopoziter, an LA based car builder, fabricated the cars for the film. Also, look for a cameo of Tobias Pahloosh in the beginning of the movie. The plot of Street Racers is lifted straight from the mean streets of the asphalt jungle of the oil stained roads from which the world of illegal street racing was born. The fire and fury of the turbo charged script gives the movie that dash of realism. I found myself pulled in and, before long, found myself shouting "Just wrap your legs 'round these velvet rims and strap your hands 'cross my engines" at the movie screen. Word of warning to parents of children under the age of 18 if considering this film: Some of the the sex scenes are graphic and unstimulated.
