A well-made and intriguing, if lackluster take on the Scooby Doo-niverse
sleep-710521 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Pros: Well made, especially for its budget; plenty of potential; modern aesthetics and sensibility; some good performances by cast.

Cons: Little menace or tension to be found in the pilot; some of the cast are way too old to be playing teens; inevitable rehash of 'supernatural high school' tropes; Scooby is largely irrelevant.

For what is, at its heart, a low-budget fan film of a children's cartoon, Mystery Incorporated looks good on the screen. Scenes are shot and lit well, the acting (while sometimes hit-or-miss) is professional, and the production hits all of the checkmarks necessary to air as a broadcast or cable series. The limited budget really only shows itself in the paucity of special effects and the lack of plentiful background extras in scenes that need them.

Content-wise, Mystery Incorporated eschews the original formula of "meddling kids/spooky house/old man in a mask" aesthetic in favor of a more 'Riverdale'-esque vibe in which teens act like (and are played by) 20-somethings while living in a superficially pleasant town where magic and supernatural evil lurk in the shadows.

Here, Fred (Elza) is ironically the only person who starts off believing in the supernatural (having witnessed something demonic murder his parents). Seeking answers, he partners up with Velma (Hutton), who gets to play both The Scully and The Willow here as she is a self-proclaimed Believer in Science who nevertheless also has access to a conveniently enormous collection of tomes about demons and monsters. Still off in their own corners are Daphne (Chancellor), a superficial socialite on the brink of developing a conscience; and Shaggy (Villain), a lonely pothead trying to shed his unwanted role of 'campus drug dealer.' Shaggy banters with Scooby, but Scooby doesn't talk back (at least not that we can hear).

With a low budget, it's perhaps a wise choice to not have any words come out of Scooby's mouth- I doubt it could have been pulled off convincingly- but it also robs the series of its traditional source of tension-relieving comic relief.

Then again, there's not much tension in Mystery Incorporated, nor is there much in the way of horror. The first ghost encountered (Miner 49er) is described by a character as "a really methed-out homeless guy" and is half as scary as one; his mayhem is largely limited to lunging at people and engaging in an unconvincing battle with Fred. A teaser at the end does seem to indicate that future villains will be a little more murderous and threatening, which is badly needed if this fan project is ever going to reach its full potential/number of proposed episodes.

Good Fun

I really enjoyed this, I never heard anything about the show until it popped up on my youtube suggestions. The main characters do a solid job a couple of the support are a bit rough but to be expected, still thoroughly enjoyed this. For a low budget web series outstanding work. This is something I never knew I wanted, I really like the supernatural vibe and it looks great as well. Really hope theres more to come.

There's room for potential...
classic_rock_lover12 May 2022
I'm a huge Scooby-Doo fan. Watched all of the cartoons (OG) and movies (animated and live action ones from the early 2000s). For reference, I'm 30 years old. This randomly popped up on my YouTube and decided to check it out.

There's definitely hard Riverdale vibes here. Which isn't really a compliment. The first season I thoroughly enjoyed and then the show went down hill after that, honestly surprised it hasn't been canceled yet. This also reminded me of that skit (I think it was on Jimmy Fallon) where they did a Riverdale version of the Peanuts characters. Take that, make it Scooby-Doo, and you get this.

However, I like where this show is headed. It got better. By the end of it I was wishing there was another episode to watch. I do agree with other people that some of the actors look a little too old to be playing high schoolers. And yes, most TV shows and movies cast people in their 20s to play high schoolers. I'm aware of that and aware of why they tend to do that. Just maybe they should've had this set in college instead?

Anyways, for a fan made project this is honestly amazing. There are some big budget shows/movies that don't look this good. I just think they need to not lean so hard into Riverdale territory. I like the idea of a more serious live action Scooby-Doo story, but it shouldn't feel like Riverdale 2.0. Also, there needs to be more Scooby-Doo! I do like they didn't try to make him talk, but he's a cute dog and there should be more scenes with him.

Interested to see what the rest of this series brings to the story and characters!

Solid Effort
xtidusxyunax4 May 2022
This was a pleasant surprise when this showed up on my Youtube feed.

I miss when Youtube was filled with content like this. Shows like Video Game High Shcool put Freddie Wong and others put their effort into something. Mystery Incorporated you can see the labor of love the people making it have and wanted to tell the story.

This is an amazing effort for something fanmade and no studio backing. Sure there are things that could be better with more money and crew, something like the 3rd act of the first episode could of been shown in a higher takes. Or more shots that are not just profile view of characters. But what it's dealing with, as shooting with extras and locations would be a headache on a small budget. So either way its good for what it is.

The characters, from one episode you get more or less motivation for all of the Scooby crew and their personalities. I can see the chemistry between Velma and Fred, and would love to see more as the show progresses.

Of course, let's talk the obvious comparisons to Riverdale. I like Riverdale because it's as cheesy as it's source material. This does the same, but could touch on also how Buffy use to be and be it's own thing.

Either way all I can say is keep it up, and hope to see more and more would building, I am curious and want to know more.

Surprisingly Good
stabletrembling5 May 2022
Surprisingly well done, legitimately feels like a CW quality show, put the Riverdale spin on Scooby-Doo and you get this. If this was on the CW it would obviously have a lower rating but the fact that this is completely indie and this well done is honestly astounding.

ill give this a 10/10 due to shooting this on a £20,000 budget!

Yes you read that right 20 grand and people are moaning that scoobie doo doesnt talk!.so i found this on youtube not sure how it popped up on my feed but it did and was pleasantly surprised how good it was.a scoobie doo for grown ups but didnt realise it was being crowd funded.this has been made to look netflix esq show with just a fraction of the cost in making it.ive watched films that have been made on a shoe string budget and it shows but you dont notice it with this at all.i dont think i know any of the cast but 2 of them are the writers of the show and when you hear them speaking pasionantly about their baby you can tell they have put so much effort into their baby they want this to succeed.the extra scenes ive seen on the imbd website looks like they are doing episode 2 due to bits that wasnt in the first episode.fingers crossed first episode drew over 3,000,000 views over a year and maybe a netflix will take a chance on them.i have put a little donation on their indigogo crowdfund website.every little helps!

Looking forward to more!
djlnchbx7 May 2022
Was surprised with the quality of a fan made pilot, it was well done, good quality, and am excited to see more! It is a different sort of take on the Scooby Doo line and it shows promise. If netflix or another company picks it up, it would be that much better, but as it is, the production quality is excellent, some of the actors (like the one coach) were a bit off but over all , very well done.

Like Zoinks!

A broody low budget version of Scooby Doo. If you wanted a modern take on a classic, why choose tropes from 40 years ago? ... a stock soundtrack that sounds like it was from 20 years ago? Remove the shoehorn slang parroted from Tiktok trends, and this show gives us nothing new or fresh. At the heart it should be a mystery.. and the hook just isn't that engaging. Sadly It's not good. Could have been worse... the dialogue, the plot, the acting, and cinematography would be alright if it wasn't such a beloved property, but this seems more like a cash grab than a labor of love. If it wasn't for that I wouldn't have sat through it. Thelma makes a huge deal about "loving science" then spends the rest of the show researching occult volumes as if they were textbooks.

The best performance in this whole show is by far Scoob's swinging ball sack. The fake vignette could have been toned down a stop or three. The spirit of Scooby Doo should be a rational (non-supernatural) explanation behind every mystery, but that requires actual effort. If I didn't care or was 12, I'd probably be into it. But today it doesn't work, audiences are smarter and deserve more respect.

Good direction, poorly navigated
zachsextra7 May 2022
This seems like an attempt to do to Scooby Doo what Riverdale did to Archie Comics, but with much more appropriate source material to work with. The universe of Scooby Doo far better lends itself to a teen supernatural/crime drama. However, the writers really dropped the ball. Every interaction comes off so poorly. The script and plot progression is more ham-fisted than any live action Disney Channel movie. 80% of the "teen" actors look like they're 30-40 years old. We actually have really good teenage actors nowadays, so why are we using failed adult actors to play high schoolers? It's not 2000 anymore. Also the writers must have just imagined what they thought ultra cool high schoolers act like nowadays without consulting anyone who graduated high school in the past 10 years. I don't think any of the writers have ever seen what a drug deal or rave looks like.

In short, the script is poorly executed despite the writers having so much to work with, none of the conversations or interactions feel like they progress naturally or realistically, and the overwhelming majority of the actors should be recast.

Nostalgic & Intriguing

Warning: Spoilers
I was surprised when I saw this on my feed, I watched Velma the new animated series which is okay but doesn't do justice of the original. But this! This is how you do a modern retelling of a story. Mystery Incorporated does justice far better than Velma does, having Scoob there as well made it 10x better. The casting for the characters was pretty spot on in my head and I loved how they clearly made Shaggy a stoner. Each character portrayal was excellent! And the storyline is great as well, I loved how they changed it to be where they weren't friends that liked monster/ ghost hunting they were just kids pulled into this by misadventure. When I saw the trailer for the first time I truly thought it was a new CW show, and then when I saw that it wasn't I was genuinely impressed by everyone who made this so cutos to them for making such a compelling story and a beautifully crafted series. I cannot wait for the rest of the series!

Impressive Pilot
Rammstein_CoF064 May 2022
For being fan made and through a kick-starter, this was pretty impressive. I do actually have my fingers crossed the whole first season gets made.

It's premise was sold as a mix of Riverdale and Supernatural. But I would say its much like all the other supernatural shows that has cone before like Charmed and Buffy. And it's not like your traditional Scooby-do. Scooby is a normal dog, but it's a good thing. It makes it more serious where if he spoke, it would be too comedic and not fit the show.

The cinematography and CG were pretty impressive for such a low budget. Could dialogue and acting be a bit better? Sure. But even most big production shows have worse!

After watching the episode I watched the concept trailer, and have to say. The break due to covid actually helped them IMO. I think they must of reshot stuff and it came out for the better.

So I highly recommend giving this pilot a shot.

This is a MUST watch!
mb-3129311 May 2022
I have been a big fan of Scooby Doo for a VERY long time. I am a die hard fan of "Scooby Doo Where are You?" When I saw this, I was apprehensive. I feared it would be bad like many live action versions have been. I was very surprised to find it was not bad. In fact, it is phenomenal! Especially for being a fan series! If I didn't know better I would say it was an official series from the CW! I cannot recommend this enough. From the acting to the easter eggs to the characters and story themselves, it is a must watch! If the pilot was fantastic, I can only imagine what the rest of the series has in store.

watf-711446 May 2022
This is such a sugary, cheap, over glossed easily forgotten nonsense, it is hard to see how anyone would make any effort to watch more than one episode. No depth in the characters all of whom would be at home on a cat walk.

I heard that American audiences wont accept a normal looking cast, but it really just takes you away from whats happening as you already groaning before the story begins.

Zoinks! Colour me smitten!
damiennimai6 May 2022
I must admit I was confused when I saw this on YouTube. I thought it must have been pirated from network TV or similar. The quality of the acting, sets, script, effects and music (though loud) is just so spot on. Imagine my surprise with a quick Google I realised this was fan made but also crowd funded??

It is so good.

This is a love letter to every Scooby fan out there with enough that new comers will enjoy every second. Really well done to the team behind it and thank you. You very unexpectedly made my day.

Excellent TV Indy series
monberger14 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Starting by saying the cast is spot on! The four do not look overdone; I think they are perfect. Norville, aka Shaggy, is great without looking dorky but a good looks, and I love that great Dane so adorable perfect Scoob! Velma's character is witty and book-smart intuitive, and her image is cute. Daphne a beautiful red hair trying to figure it out herself who she is that is overpower by her oppressive mother and living a superficial life that she does not belong. And lastly, Fred is a perfect an everyday nice-looking kid without putting too much on the physical for Fred but just enough to take on the character ideally. I I think it is a great tv show can't wait for more episodes. I hope this show is not taken from a powerful network, then they will ruin it. You-tube is showing this for free which is the only platform you can watch this great show. Give it a try, it is a good one.

By the way, I learned that the CW network is making a similar show called Mystery Inc. Which, it is for sure a bigger budget and produce by the king of the network Berlanti. I prefer this one specially the casting and the direction the show is going.

You wouldn't believe this was done by crowd funding, you could easily think in was from a big production company. I've been a fan of scooby doo since the early 80's and this show has not let the brand down, infact ,its elevated it.

I grew up with Scooby-Doo, I have been a big fan since a was a kid (I'm 39 now)..... I have seem all the things related to Scooby-Doo and by far this is one of the best projects I ever seen.

A very realistics story of Mistery Inc., more realistic characters (including a REAL dog), Scooby doesn't talk? Of course he's dog and dogs don't talk ,darker stories.... that's all good... I can't wait to see more....

NOT THE SAME AS THE CARTOON, BUT....
victor_sianghio_ii7 December 2022
Look, the premise is ok; and I reconciled the fact that this is not the same as the cartoon as it tries to get into the "dark mystery" bandwagon such as what Sabrina, Riverdale, and Wednesday have done, but...hair and makeup must at least be better.

Daphne looks old in her hair. She looks like her mom. Too many flyaways. Daphne's hair is her crown. It looks messy and NOT her.

Shaggy....at the very least be "shaggy" and not curly. What happened to staying true to the character?

I know the original character's' wardrobe is supposed to be from the 70s; but the show deviates from that way too much.

...and the dialogues, they're too bland. Who's the writer?

Chemistry during scenes....the director should change his style.

I was late to the party and only found out about this recently (so I wasn't a backer), but I am so glad that I did! This is fantastic. It is a true homage to the animated series', while also reminding me of many other fantastic live action shows like supernatural. It's great, and I'm looking forward to more!

A Solid Take on a Great Concept
maximhussey8 May 2022
This first episode of Mystery Incorporated is a solid start to what has the makings of a great show. It's obvious the care and attention to detail that has been put into this by the team, who are clearly fans of Scooby. The inside jokes and references are amazing and unexpected and I'm sure there's quite a few that I missed. The way the characters are handled is excellent - the gang are different from how we'd usually see them but retain the key aspects of what makes them iconic.

There are a few production and directorial choices that I think holds this episode back from being truly great TV. Although the lighting is amazing and shots are structured incredibly well, the way the show is filmed potentially reduces the excitement level - shots are too stable and there's a noticeable lack of camera movement that slows things down, especially in bigger sequences. The large amount of background blur removes characters from their environment and makes it harder to get a sense of what is going on. I also wish the score was more consistent to match the visuals on screen - I like the early 2000s music that is used during scene changes but the underscore could be darker and more like the original 1967 series. Scenes lack suspense and tension because the music underneath doesn't match the visuals. All of these things are just my opinion and are subjective so I'm sure other people have differing opinions.

Overall this is a great production because despite its flaws, it stands out as a passion project from a team of creatives who have an obvious love for the source material. As a first episode it succeeds in building a world and introducing us to these iconic characters in their new setting. I can't wait to see what the next episode has in store. Good luck team!
