Great locations, experienced crews and juicy incentives have made UK studios increasingly attractive, and brought Hollywood stars to the unlikeliest locations. But with budgets falling and a lack of skills training, could the bubble be about to burst?
When Peter Vardy joined Calderdale council 46 years ago, his job mostly involved maintaining local parks and, later, organising the occasional firework display. But these days Vardy’s CV can truthfully boast that he has shut down roads to stage car crashes and found the perfect bridge for a fictional detective’s (fictional) suicide. The West Yorkshire borough where the 64-year-old works has become a filming hotspot, home to big-budget productions such as the Disney+ superhero series Secret Invasion and the Paramount Plus period drama A Gentleman in Moscow. Just days after the Russian blockbuster “The Master and Margarita” surged to the top of the domestic box office, Kremlin cronies, pro-war propagandists and an army of online trolls have waged a campaign to discredit the film and its director, Michael Lockshin, a U.S. citizen who was raised in the Soviet Union and has been outspoken in his opposition to the war in Ukraine.
A source close to the film, who asked not to be named out of fear of potential repercussions, tells Variety that the movie’s staggering success and pointed critique of authoritarian rule has struck a nerve in right-wing circles at a time when Russian President Vladimir Putin has cracked down on any form of dissent.
“The propagandists are both envious and also hateful that a movie with an anti-censorship, anti-totalitarian, anti-war message is getting so much popularity, that they have doubled down,” the source said.

A Haunting in Venice is both the best Kenneth Branagh film and the best Agatha Christie adaptation in decades. Adapted from the famed mystery writer’s 1969 novel Hallowe’en Party, Branagh returns as Hercule Poirot, the iconic Belgian detective with a penchant for sweets and the world’s most mustachioed mustache. This time the year is 1947 and we are in the Floating City. World War II has just ended and the melancholy of death and despair hangs over everything, despite the beautiful setting.
Recently retired, Poirot is lured back into the game via frenemy Ariadne Oliver, an avatar for Christie herself. The two attend a seance thrown by Rowena Drake (a striking Kelly Reilly), an opera singer who has run out of money and reasons to live. Her daughter Alicia (Rowan Robinson) drowned in the canal just the year before. Rowena empowers the infamous, “unholy” witch Mrs. Reynolds (Michelle Yeoh...

This generation of filmgoers mostly probably thinks of Irish actor-director Kenneth Branagh as Agatha Christie’s mustachioed detective Hercule Poirot in Murder on the Orient Express (2017), Death on the Nile (2022) and the upcoming A Haunting in Venice.
But there is so much more to Branagh’s career. As a director, he’s dabbled in multiple genres, including fantasy, action, science fiction, thriller, comedy and superhero.
Branaghs career as an actor has been equally as diverse. He’s acted in legal thrillers, Westerns, romantic thrillers, animation, fantasy pics and dramedies.
And then there’s Shakespeare. There’s always Shakespeare. Branagh has a self-professed love of the Bard. He’s acted in and directed...

Hollywood has been adapting Tom Clancy’s techno-thrillers for three decades-plus — with a handful of familiar faces playing the famous character of Jack Ryan, from Alec Baldwin to Ben Affleck. But how have critics on RottenTomatoes.com rated these adaptations?
“The Hunt for Red October” (1990)
Tomatometer: 89%
Tom Clancy’s first big-screen outing pitted CIA agent Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) against a mysterious Russian sub commander played by Sean Connery. As the L.A. Times critic Sheila Benson wrote: “You may not be limp from accumulated tension when this hunt is over, but its cautiously upbeat global message leaves a satisfying glow and it operates with a crackerjack premise.”
“Clear and Present Danger” (1994)

In his second outing as Jack Ryan, Harrison Ford chases down a rogue CIA agent and a drug cartel. The New York Times’ Janet Maslin praises “another fast, gripping spy story with some good tricks up its sleeve,...

Prime Video‘s “Jack Ryan” has been a massive hit for the streaming service, and John Krasinski‘s take on the character will end this year. Chris Pine is not who you think he is. Sure, he’s the handsome, blue-eyed actor famous for roles combining action, intensity, and charm in Star Trek, Wonder Woman, and Into the Woods. But beneath the movie star is a man who grew up with deep insecurities. He loves his job and talking cinema but doesn’t enjoy talking about himself and would rather be drinking coffee and reading than being interviewed.
It is Valentine’s Day morning when we speak via Zoom, just a few days shy of the 20th anniversary of the E.R. episode “A Thousand Cranes,” Pine’s 2003 onscreen debut where he played a guy who got drunk—at a blow-out Valentine’s party. Who's your favorite Jack Ryan? For author Tom Clancy, who created the Ryanverse and wrote or co-wrote 17 novels set within it, it wasn't Harrison Ford.
The Jack Ryan role has changed hands five times onscreen; Alec Baldwin first played the character in "The Hunt for Red October" in 1990, before Ford took over and delivered the one-two punch of "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger" in 1992 and 1994. After Ford vacated the role, a succession of younger actors — Ben Affleck, Chris Pine, and John Krasinski — would appear as the titular CIA analyst in the movies "The Sum of All Fears" and "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit," as well as the Prime Video series "Jack Ryan."
It seems "younger" was what Clancy always had in mind. According to Indiewire, Ford was director John McTiernan's first choice to play Jack Ryan in "The Hunt for Red October." However, in a 2002 interview with film...

Even with a no-phones policy at the 1,500 seat concert, plenty of footage from the show ended up on social media.
The concert was Beyoncé’s first in over 4 years, which had many fans excited, but also drew sharp criticism for her choice of venue.
Much of the criticism centred on Dubai’s strict laws against LGBTQ people and same-sex relationships, with many posing out how Beyoncé’s latest album, Renaissance, was celebrated for honouring and taking inspiration from the queer community and LGBTQ icons.

Like Batman or Superman, Jack Ryan is a character that has seen several on-screen iterations played by a variety of actors. Unlike these superhero figures though, Jack Ryan isn’t rich and doesn’t have powers of any kind – really he’s just a regular dude. Created by prolific writer Tom Clancy, Jack Ryan is a man from a middle-class background who uses his military experience and education in history and economics to save the U.S. from both foreign and domestic adversaries.
But even though he doesn’t appear to be much more than a normal guy, that’s what makes him more relatable than other action heroes. Jack Ryan has been able to survive through so many film and TV adaptations because he is able to handle such exceptional situations with his intelligence and determination. He’s the epitome of the “American Dream,” and that really resonates with people.

Jack Ryan might be valuable IP for a streaming giant like Amazon, but Tom Clancy’s entire brand of cloak-and-dagger “make your dad feel young again” spy stories has felt out of step with the film world ever since 2002’s “The Sum of All Fears,” when they nuked Ben Affleck at the Super Bowl in a desperate attempt to keep pace with the effects-driven spectacle of contemporary summer blockbusters. It’s too grounded, too small, too contained.
Despite the popularity of the “Rainbow Six” video game franchise (among other interactive series inspired by the author’s work), the Cold War concerns that grip Clancy’s writing feel a bit outmoded in a digital world in which keyboards and codes have become the most dangerous weapons a country might have. There’s a good reason why millennials didn’t flock to 2014’s “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” and it’s not just because it’s bad.

Flying high after two Academy Awards for “The Father,” which it produced and sold, London-based Embankment has unveiled a first look photo of “Sex Education” star Emma Mackey in “Emily,” as well as robust early pre-sales on the feature, an Emily Brontë origin story.
Mackey was nominated on Wednesday for a BAFTA TV Award for Netflix’s “Sex Education” in the category of female performance in a comedy program.
News of first major territories sold, including much of Europe, comes as “Emily” begins principal photography. The film marks the writer-director feature debut of actor Frances O’Connor, a double Golden Globe nominee for her performances in “Madame Bovary” and “Missing.”
First major territory deals have been struck with significant distributors and also take in one multi-territory deal — both signs of the film’s perceived market potential.

Bollywood film makers may not have to go as far as Rajasthan or Dubai for shooting on desert sites. Welcome to Uran across Mumbai harbour!
Lush green mangrove zones have now been turned into massive deserts and sprawling wetlands into barren lands at several places providing ideal shooting locations, environmentalists have said in a tongue-in-cheek letter to Imppa (Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association).
“With none of the concerned authorities remaining unconcerned over the relentless destruction of the fragile biodiversity, Bollywood producers might as well make use of the man-made deserts and barren lands for their shoots,” said B N Kumar, director of NatConnect Foundation.
“This is no exaggeration as innumerable complaints to the government and the orders from the environment department and even the high court appointed wetlands and mangroves committees have not yielded any results to save nature in Uran,” he regretted.

Doom Patrol Season 2 Episode 8
With the penultimate episode of the season, the newest Doom Patrol installment sets the table for at least two major conflicts that almost guarantee a cliffhanger next week. However, despite that potentially frustrating possibility, “Dad Patrol” once again features excellent character development, with Abigail Shapiro the standout performance this episode as Dorothy.
The episode opens by flashing back to Jane/Kay’s childhood where her abusive father would force her into the well to spend the night. It is a dark beginning to the story, with Kay’s trauma at being alone in the well punctuated by the loss of her stuffed animal Harry.

After grounding to a standstill during the coronavirus lockdown, film and TV production in Moscow is expected to resume as early as the end of June, according to several sources.
For industry players and government officials, a summer reboot would begin the latest chapter in ongoing efforts to turn the Russian capital into a leading production destination, a process that many say begins with the simple step of introducing the world to the city.
“I believe the international production industry just doesn’t have information about Moscow yet—about the costs, about the possibilities for filming,” says Svetlana Maximchenko of the Moscow Film Commission.
Part of the challenge is dispelling long-held perceptions of Moscow as a hotbed of Cold War-style intrigue, a difficult image to shake at a time of distrust in the U.S. over Russia’s role in the 2016 presidential elections, and allegations of efforts by Russian operatives...

The show will premiere exclusively across the Nordics on Nent Group’s Viaplay streaming service in the fall.
The experimental drama sees its protagonists communicating with one another primarily through their phones and screens; and they are filming their scenes one at a time with a minimal crew present, said Nent Group. “Orca” is being produced by Sofie Palage at Warner Bros. International Television Production Sweden.

After Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit failed to make much of an impact at the box office, Paramount is gearing up to venture into another corner of that fictional universe with Without Remorse, a new film focused on a character that was also created by author Tom Clancy. The spy thriller, which stars Michael B. Jordan (Creed, […]

Another month, another batch of new movies and TV shows headed to Netflix.
2020 is quickly becoming one of the most troubling and downright depressing years in recent memory, but the Internet’s biggest streaming services are still delivering tons of fresh material to ease the pain of self-isolation.
It’s by no means easy, of course, but there’s a sense of camaraderie to be found on the web. For instance, Netflix Party is a Google Chrome extension that lets you and your friends/family stream content simultaneously. It doesn’t always work that well, truth be told, but it’s still a fun feature that a lot of people are getting good use out of.
And now, with a fresh dump of new films and TV series being added to Netflix this week, there’s tons of great stuff to watch. In fact, today saw the streaming giant add...

The film is shooting in and around Warsaw and stars Stranger Things’ Alec Utgoff. Principal photography has commenced on Malgorzata Szumowska’s Wonder Zenia on location in and around Warsaw. The film stars Alec Utgoff in the title role, alongside Agata Kulesza, Maja Ostaszewska (Body), Weronika Rosati and Katarzyna Figura. "I’m really excited to work on this project with Malgo,” said Alec Utgoff. “Her passion and persistence are what attracted me most. I saw her most recent film — The Other Lamb — so beautifully shot and directed. I think this film is going to be striking and original, a real eye opener for audiences.” The screenplay is by Szumowska and her regular writing collaborator (and cinematographer) Michal Englert. The film tells the story of Zenia, an industrious Ukrainian migrant worker in Poland. Zenia works as a masseur who makes house calls...

Malgorzata Szumowska, best director winner at the Berlin Film Festival for “Body,” has started shooting “Wonder Zenia,” starring “Stranger Things” actor Alec Utgoff, on location in and around Warsaw.
Utgoff, who played Alexei in the third season of Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and also appeared in “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” stars in the title role in “Wonder Zenia.” The film also stars Agata Kulesza, who played “Red Wanda” in Oscar-winner “Ida,” Maja Ostaszewska (“Body”), Weronika Rosati and Katarzyna Figura.
Zenia, the film’s protagonist, is an industrious Ukrainian migrant worker in Poland who makes house calls as a masseur to the needy and aspirational residents of a middle-class gated community near Warsaw. He is privy to all of their problems, anxieties and secrets – and something of an unwitting guru figure. Zenia’s grounded spirituality, apparent healing powers and broad shoulders make him an object of lust for many of the lost souls in the community.

Jack Ryan has had an interesting history when it comes to attempts to bring the character to film and TV. Multiple Hollywood stars have taken their turn at the role since the first adaptation almost 30 years ago: Alec Baldwin (The Hunt for Red October), Harrison Ford (Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger), Ben Affleck (The Sum of All Fears – another of Pearl Harbor’s gifts to the world), and most recently, Chris Pine in 2014’s ergonomically labelled Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. And I haven’t even started on the TV show yet.
Before I get wracked by existentialism, I’ll tell you why I’m here plainly: plans are apparently afoot to bring Jack back to the big screen once more, with a new movie based on the novel Enemy Contact. Though I can’t say who Paramount have in mind for the role on this proposed attempt (because...
