When Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang and her colleagues started writing the Commonwealth arc back in 2019 — “That’s how long it’s been brewing,” she tells TVLine — they didn’t set out to mirror modern-day disparities between the haves and the have nots. And yet, based on Sunday’s episode (recapped in full here), they kind of did just that. (Read our full recap here.)
“In order to tell this story about a society that is stratified by class, we were looking at a lot of historical moments and talking about things that wound up being very relevant to our current moment in time,...

You know the rule: If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. So neither we nor the scrappy survivors of The Walking Dead should have been surprised to start discovering in Sunday’s episode that the Commonwealth wasn’t all bright colors and baked goods. Beneath its candy-coated surface, it was infected with a strain of classicism so virulent, it appeared to be about to spark a revolt. Read on, and we’ll discuss not only the dramatic fashion in which we found out about the dissent among the ranks but most everything that went down in “New Haunts.

The Foo Fighters play themselves in this vanity project horror-comedy, directed by Bj McDonnell (Hatchet III). Die-hard fans of the band will enjoy seeing their heroes on the big screen, but for everyone else it’s a mildly amusing, occasionally tedious outing that’s better at serving up gore than it is at delivering laughs.
Set in the present day, the film opens with Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl deciding that he wants to do something special for their upcoming tenth album, so he persuades the band to record in a Hollywood mansion that was once the site of another band’s grisly demise. This weekend’s big film release might just remind you of a classic TV candy commercial: “Hey, you got rock ‘n’ roll in my horror!” “Well, you got horror in my rock ‘n’ roll!”. But the big question is whether they taste great together. Maybe it’s “delish” or perhaps it’s a big loud gooey mess. It’s not like the two haven’t mixed in the past. Countless monster chillers have used pounding metal music in their soundtracks, while many a “head-bangin'” band have lifted imagery from several classic and modern terror flicks for their video shorts on MTV. Now, this flick goes several steps further by having a very popular group playing themselves and confronting the “forces of darkness”. Sure the Monkees were chased around by clones of Frank, Wolfie, and Drac in their 60s TV series, but nothing like this! They may be because they wisely...

As the first of The Walking Dead’s three final season arcs neared its conclusion Sunday — the last of the eight episodes airs October 10 — Negan gave Maggie an unlikely Alpha makeover, Eugene stepped in such deep doodoo, he could’ve lost a boot, Leah revealed to Daryl that at least some trace of humanity still flickered inside her, and Elijah… Oh. Poor, sweet Elijah. He was “reunited” with his sister in pretty much the worst way imaginable. Read on, and we’ll go over all the details.

Sam Raimi was so shell-shocked by the negative reaction to Spider–Man 3 that he nearly did not get back in the superhero saddle to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
In a recent interview with Collider, the Evil Dead mastermind — who also brought Spider-Man to the big screen in the 2002 smash that helped pave the way for the Marvel Cinematic Universe — said he never planned on making another superhero film after the venom (no pun) spewed over 2007’s Spider-Man 3.

Nearly two decades before Twilight, Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles had all the makings of the definitive vampire movie franchise.
Interview with the Vampire, a film based on the writer’s first book in the vampire series, starred Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt as stately Louisiana vampires Lestat de Lioncourt and Louis de Pointe du Lac. It was quite well-received. Its follow-up, the 2002 Aaliyah-starring Queen of the Damned…was not. As such, Rice’s 13-book (and counting) series seemed destined to stay on the page for good.
That all changed last year, however, when The Walking Dead network AMC greenlit a series adaptation of Rice’s vampire saga starring Sam Reid (The Astronaut Wives Club) and Jacob Anderson (Game of Thrones) as Lestat and Louis. Now we’re closer than ever to seeing the definitive onscreen version of Rice’s original vision but details as to just what...

Considering Fantastic Fest 2021 is this writer’s first time back at an in-person festival since Sundance 2020, I’m very excited (and a teeny bit nervous) about getting to spend a whole week indulging in movies from all over the world once again. Later this week, Fantastic Fest will be kicking off on Thursday, and will continue running in-person through September 30th (and the Ff Virtual Fest will begin the very same day).
And even though I’m always pumped for Fantastic Fest’s entire genre-spanning programming slate, there are a handful of films that have already caught my eye, and I thought I’d go ahead and preview 13 titles that I’m incredibly psyched to see as a horror and sci-fi fan. Also, I just wanted to make a note: I didn’t include films that Daily Dead has already covered at previous festivals. Not that they’re not worthy,...

A few weeks ago, Brandon Christensen’s latest genre offering, Superhost, made its streaming debut exclusively on the Shudder platform, and fans from all over have been falling in love with Christensen’s hilariously unsettling vacation from hell. Written, directed, produced, and edited by Christensen, Superhost stars Gracie Gillam, Sara Canning, Osric Chau, and Barbara Crampton. Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to chat with the multi-hyphenate about the real-life inspiration behind the story of Superhost, his experiences collaborating with his cast, and more.
And if you haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, be sure to watch Superhost now that it’s currently available on Shudder.
So great to speak with you, Brandon. I really loved this, and everyone was great here. But Gracie to me, holy crap—she really impressed me. I've seen her pop up in other things, but this to me was a whole new level for her.

Season 7 of AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead is setting the stage for a classic battle between good and evil — in other words, an epic clash between friends-turned-enemies Morgan and Strand. In the trailer released Thursday, Victor says, “I’m done listening to you, Morgan — everyone is. Everyone tried it your way, and look what happened.
“Face the truth,” he continues, his voice rich with contempt. “You failed… and now it’s my turn… I’m going to do what you couldn’t… I’m going to rebuild the world [and] help everyone you let down, all while you watch from the outside.

There aren’t many stains on the legacy of consummate conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein, best known as the long-running maestro, front and center, for the New York Philharmonic beginning in the 1950s. But in January 1970 one curious controversy briefly turned Bernstein’s life into a tabloid fixture when Tom Wolfe wrote a New York Magazine essay skewering a benefit party Bernstein held in his home for the Black Panthers as the stuff of “radical chic” — a term the “Bonfire of the Vanities” writer coined to describe a certain strain of limousine liberalism. The party convened the liter- and glitterati of 1970s New York City to support one of the politically active Bernstein’s many causes, but critics like Wolfe interpreted the event as misguided. Wolfe went so far as to call it “slumming.”

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead. If you’d rather watch first, read later, exit stage left.
As if it wasn’t bad enough that Sunday’s claustrophobic Walking Dead brought back memories of rush hour on the subway, it also stuck a fork in not one but two characters — one of whose name we only recently remembered and the other of whose we just found out. So yeah, Ok, maybe our investment in them was on the low side. The episode still managed to bring to a head — and at least for...

If you think that The Walking Dead is in any way, shape or form done with the surprise relationship that Season 10’s bonus episodes revealed that Daryl forged with loner Leah, you’re going to want to think again.
Considering that he gave up looking for her far more quickly than he did “brother” Rick — a game of hide and seek that has stretched out over years! — “there’s definitely going to be hell to pay one way or the other,” Norman Reedus tells TVLine, “whether it’s nice hell or horrible hell.”

The Boy Who Lived is changing his U.S. streaming address again.
All eight original “Harry Potter” films from Warner Bros. are returning to HBO Max next month, after spending a little less than a year on NBCUniversal’s Peacock.
Starting Sept. 1, the eight wizarding films based on J.K. Game of Thrones vet Jacob Anderson is sinking his teeth into a bloody new role: The actor will star in AMC’s Interview With the Vampire series as the titular vamp Louis, our sister site Variety reports.
In the Anne Rice novels, Louis de Pointe du Lac relates the story of his life to a reporter, in particular how he was turned into a vampire and then mentored by Lestat de Lioncourt (played by Sam Reid in the series). Louis was portrayed by Brad Pitt in the 1994 feature film.

Stars: María Elena Arpón, César Burner, Lone Fleming, José Thelman, Rufino Inglés, Verónica Llimerá | Written and Directed by Amando de Ossorio
When Amando de Ossorio made Tombs of the Blind Dead (La noche del terror ciego) he had been active in the Spanish film industry as a writer and director since the early 1950s, mostly working on Westerns. After having a minor hit with the 1969 vampire film, Fangs of the Living Dead he decided to follow it up with another horror film. The result spawned three sequels and secured the director’s place in genre history.
Synapse Films have recently restored Tombs of the Blind Dead for an upcoming Blu-ray release and that print premiered as part of this year’s Fantasia film festival. As a long time fan of the entire Blind Dead franchise, I was curious to see how it compared to previous releases.

Dylan Sprouse & Joe Harris's Norwegian horror comic book series Sun Eater is collected in a trade paperback that's available today via Simon and Schuster, and we have an exclusive preview just for Daily Dead readers!
Illustrated by Diego Yapur and colored by D.C. Alonso, with letters by Saida Temofonte, the trade collects issues #1-3 and short stories and prose collected from Heavy Metal Magazine, along with original character designs.
This is something that Dylan Sprouse has been working on for years and he talks about his love for genre and the origins of Sun Eater:
“I love fantasy-action and I wanted to create something that would appeal to newer fans of the genre while tackling an elevated story. The characters I wrote are from actual tales and bardic songs, and the story is about the adult, dark, grotesque, and somber world of Sun Eater and its desperate, faulty protagonist.

Dead and Company brought their summer tour to the site of the original Woodstock in Bethel Woods, New York, on Monday night. It was the first time the Grateful Dead spinoff site visited the amphitheater, and they celebrated by playing the Grateful Dead’s five-song setlist from the original Woodstock in sequence.
“Fifty years ago, right here, we tried this little sequence,” Bob Weir told the crowd. “And it didn’t work so well for us, so we’re going to try again.”

Though fans of The Walking Dead might have thought that Daryl had made peace with the fact that Negan was now, for better or worse, one of them, their truce seemed to go out the window in the Season 11 premiere (recapped in full here). As the former adversaries went on a hellish food run, Daryl was downright hostile to Negan — even when the latter was making good points.
It’s not as big a tonal shift as it seemed to us, though, Norman Reedus tells TVLine. His character “doesn’t totally trust Negan, so he’s always got a side-eye on him.

In 2004, Edgar Wright shook up the zombie landscape by releasing the horror/comedy, Shaun of the Dead, a play off of George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, which follows slacker Shaun (Simon Pegg), a 30-something nobody whose life isn’t exactly in order. When the town is suddenly overrun with zombies, Shaun and his best pal Ed (Nick Frost)must rise to the occasion and protect both Liz and his mother. Despite the movie being a critical darling, Shaun of the Dead ended up being a commercial flop by making only $30 million worldwide; however, it eventually reached cult status as

Somebody woke up on the wrong side of the floor. And as you’ll see in this sneak peek at the first scene of the last season of AMC’s The Walking Dead (premiering Sunday at 9/8c), it’s a walker — a whole lot of walkers as a matter of fact.
As the goosebump-raising clip starts off, Maggie, Daryl, Carol, Rosita, Jerry and a whole host of our regulars are busy retrieving supplies from what looks like a military base when the slumbering zombies scattered about the room are awakened in most cinematic fashion. (Props to director Kevin Dowling for that cool-ass shot.

“The Walking Dead” has for more than a decade lured audiences with a unique focus on zombie violence and dystopian societies. Now that the series is entering its 11th — and final — season, it’s really getting into the hard stuff.
The Sexton, a single-malt Irish whiskey distributed by Proximo Spirits, has struck a deal with AMC Networks that will make it a partner of “Walking Dead” through late 2022, an unusual pact in an era when many advertisers agree to sponsor a program a few episodes at a time.
Most large-scale deals of this type would surround the show with commercials and find a way to weave the product into the plot or action. Instead of being in the show, however, the Sexton is going to surround it. Product placement, particularly in a program like “Dead,” which is set in a time when most luxuries and consumer goods are no longer available,...

The Nowhere Inn: "From real-life friends Annie Clark (a.k.a. Grammy award-winning recording and touring artist St. Vincent) and Carrie Brownstein comes the metafictional account of two creative forces banding together to make a documentary about St. Vincent’s music, touring life, and on-stage persona. But they quickly discover unpredictable forces lurking within the subject and filmmaker that threaten to derail the friendship, the project, and the duo’s creative lives. From first-time filmmaker Bill Benz comes a densely woven, laugh-out-loud funny and increasingly fractured commentary on reality, identity, and authenticity. A story of two close friends who attempt to wrestle the truth out of a complex subject before the hall of mirrors that is their artistic lives devours them completely."
