The third episode has moved away from what sometimes came across as faux post Raj Downton Abbey. Here is gets down and dirty with the Indian countryside and contrasting social divide.

Maan going to the Indian countryside with the Urdu tutor Rasheed opens Maan's eyes to the social injustice that poor farmers encounter from the landowners. It chimes with the land reforms that Maan's father wants to push through.

There is an almost absurdly comical sight of courtesan Saeeda Bai having another encounter with the obese Raja that sends her writing to Maan and have him back.

Again this part of the story is more interesting than Lata meeting suitable husbands. There is shoemaker Haresh Khanna, a hard worker but smells of his work shop. Late is still enchanted by the writer Amit Chatterji but she also has a disturbing encounter late at night with another person.

I find Lata's search reminiscent of the film Crossing Delancey. There the main character in that movie did not like one suitable match as he was a pickle maker and his hands smelled of pickles.
