I admit generally that I liked My Little Pony more as a child rather than as an approaching adult, but there is still something about it that I find charming. I got my hopes up re-visiting the likes of the original movie, the specials, End of Flutter Valley and the TV shows after becoming a fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, which is one of the better animated shows right now, and(apart from the not bad but disappointing End of Flutter Valley) while not as good as I remember when I was younger they are nothing to be scorned at either. I was surprised at how nice and decent Escape from Catrina was. It is not perfect though, the ending is abrupt- perhaps a longer length might have helped- and I wasn't crazy about how Megan was animated, almost as if she had been animated in a rush. On the other hand, apart from Megan, the animation is actually pretty good, vibrant in the colours and the backgrounds are mostly fluid. Overall I do find Escape from Catrina one of the better-looking offerings of anything to do with My Little Pony in the 80s. I can think of songs more memorable than the songs here, but they are melodious and tuneful enough, and the incidental music has a wonderful sense of whimsy about it. The story zips along nicely, with some sweet, suspenseful moments, and the writing is better balanced than before, with the cute moments genuinely so without being cloying and any humour less slapstick, which I liked. The characters are great, the ponies are likable and Spike is still adorable. I loved the villain Catrina, much preferring her over Hydia and her daughters Reeka and Draggle, she is more dimensional and much more of a threat. The voice work is excellent too particularly from Tammy Grimes. All in all, very nice. 7/10 Bethany Cox
