Ashes to Ashes

This episode had some really funny moments, anything with Tony and Matt. There were also some weird moments with the James/Brian storyline. And definitely don't choke near Kath.

Ashes to ashes to comedy gold

This season is playing out differently from the first two, with other oddballs in this little community carrying more of the load for pathos and humor. It's working. This particular episode ends with the best spreading of the cremated ashes scene I've ever seen. Until now, that niche title belonged to Mel Brooks for his oft-imitated scattering shtick in Life Stinks.

Hilarious!

Some hilarious meets, grumpiness from Tony The Curmudgeon and swearing. Brilliant! Two-and-a-half series in and the concept of someone saying what you (well, certainly what I) really think about people, is still compulsive viewing.

I'm not a fan of Rocky Gervaus's shows, but this is laugh-out-loud funny!

Warning: Spoilers
Tony showing a little emotion was good. I don't like how the show relies so much on cursing, but what can you do? Funny and emotional here, so I'll let that one slide.

I used to really like this show...

Tony's grief has gone from the heart of the show in the excellent Season 1 and solid Season 2 to a plot device in Season 3.

In addition this episode was the worst of the lot, from the unfunny James/Brian scenes to Kaths' sad date.

It's become mean-spirted for the sake of it with lazy writing and an aimless main character.

Juvenile

I like this show, most of the times it's cleverly written, mixing grief, humour and a negative view of humankind.

Unfortunately, this episode is mostly about the full catalogue of repulsive, sex-obsessed male characters that populates the show. Come to think of it, all male characters are repulsive and/or deficient, except Tony and Matt (and little George).

Sleazy Ken, smelly Brian, obese James plus the shrink creepy friends are a lot to take, especially when all they talk about is sex, masturbation and filming porn.

It does not help that, to wrap the episodel, Tony is at his worst, peevish self in the pub, shouting his trademark C swear word - yet again -

We got it Tony/Ricky... you use the C word, to shock audiences I suppose, but its constant use minimises the effect. Using swear words is at its most effective when characters NEVER use them and can express themselves without profanities ...and then suddenly, they drop a C bomb.

Trading all of its charm for shock value
martijndc3 December 2023
This season seems to throw all it had built op to that point out the window. Everybody seems about twice as bitter and thrice as vile. This season is trading all of its charm for shock value. In earlier seasons the charachters speaking out and breaking social norms seemed more about growing past societal taboos instead of making being an incredibly rude person seem cool. Brian is an awfully boring character written by an edgy 13 year old boy while getting much more attention than in previous seasons. Story lines don't seem to going anywhere. Every passing minute is a disappointment. Where are the earned genuine moments this series was so good at?
