- Vic learns that the federal agent helping them out is in the "blackmail box" and has ties to Cruz Pezuela. Dutch tries to find out if he has a future serial killer on his hands, and Claudette's health is brought into question.
- Previously on...: Billings and Dutch thought they'd stumbled onto a blooming serial killer. Mackey found Pezuela's blackmail box and started an odd alliance with Aceveda, who hid the box from him. Mackey told Pezuela the Armenians had the box. The city controller, whose name was in the blackmail box, was assassinated. FBI Special Agent Olivia Murray turned out to have been in the blackmail box. Mackey told Aceveda he feared he'd already told her "enough to get us both killed."
Roll shaky credits: Vic told Ronnie about Agent Murray and said the dangerous part of it all was that they didn't know what she'd been telling Pezuela. Aceveda, Ronnie and Vic were getting asked about the assassination, and the investigator wondered if the shots were meant for Aceveda. Aceveda later told Vic he was worried their involvement would blow back on them.
Vic started feeling his way around Murray, asking her if anything came from the lead he gave her. Vic had to tell Shane about Murray being in the blackmail box and that she might be "collecting intel." Shane wanted to give the box to Rezian so he could give it back to the Mexicans for a peace deal. "Not yet," Vic said.
Murray told Wyms about a Cuban drug lord, Echeverria, who she wanted to take out. His daughter had just been kidnapped by three men and Murray wanted to find the girl before the drug lord handled it himself. Shane worried that Murray was setting them up. Shane asked Vic if he thought he was still going to be able to keep his detective job by holding on to the blackmail box. Vic claimed he wanted to put Pezuela away as "a down payment on me being able to live with myself. Now, if you can't understand that, at least respect it."
Wyms wanted to know why Danny and Dutch were intercepting subpoenas for her on the Clevon Gardner trial. Dutch took the blame and said he was concerned for Wyms' health. Cleavon was representing himself, and he's been a constant threat to Wyms. He once killed a woman who looked like Wyms just to prove a point. Wyms said she'd handle it herself and she'd give a deposition to get him behind bars.
The team was out on the street at a chop shop, following up on the Cuban drug lord case. After chasing down a guy, the team found out that Echeverrias guys had already interrogated him. The team went back to the place to find a guy dead.
Clevon showed up to take Wyms' deposition. She told him to enjoy the charade and that he'd soon die for his murders. He asked if she was taking any prescription meds and she first refused to answer. Then he presented a medicine bottle that he found in her trash.
Shane and Vic went to find Dina, a CI who knows everything about car thefts in the area. She shot at them through her door at first, but surrendered quickly when they broke in to her garage. There was a dead guy on the floor. Meanwhile, back at the barn, Clevon pressed Wyms on whether she was taking the meds during his investigation. Dutch worried that if Wyms' condition got out, it would serve to discredit all of her cases. Clevon remembered Wyms getting sick and having nose bleeds when she was interrogating him. Clevon said he might as well take some people down with him. He wanted the death penalty off the table, but Wyms wouldn't budge.
Danny asked Vic to hurry and sign the paperwork giving up his parental rights to their kid. Corrine showed up and told Vic that Cassie had been suspended for attending a "pimps and hos" party, and pictures of it were posted online. Julien had a domestic violence victim in an interview room. Her boyfriend had been bragging to his friends about doing a kidnapping.
Dutch hooked up with a serial killer profile who worked on the Clevon case. He wanted the guy to talk to Lloyd, the teenager who Dutch suspected might be a serial killer in the making.
Vic, Ronnie, Shane, Julien and Murray tracked down a loft where they thought the kidnapped Cuban girl was being kept. Vic hatched up some wild idea of what to do next but convinced Murray to ask Wyms about it. Wyms agreed but insisted on getting credit for the arrest. Vic talked another gang into faking a robbery at the loft.
Dutch examined the interview with Lloyd, who said it's unlikely the kid is a serial killer but there's "something off" with him. Meanwhile, Wyms was forced to offer Clevon life without parole, taking the death penalty off the table.
Julien rode with the gangsters and they invaded the loft. The fake robbery went off pretty smoothly and Julien found the girl, bound on a mattress. He brought her out but strategically let her go and after she ran outside, Danny conveniently drove by to pick her up. The cops all swarmed on the place and everyone put up their hands, including Julien, who smiled at Vic.
Dutch went straight to Clevon and asked him to watch the Lloyd interview. Clevon said, "He's got the look, I've seen it before." "Where?" Dutch asked. "In the mirror," Clevon said.
Vic went to find the kid who organized the "pimps and hos" party and brought him back to the barn. Vic got some disturbing information: Cassidy planned the whole thing, and scored most of the drugs.
Shane told Ronnie that Vic was going to land all three of them in jail. Shane told Ronnie that bringing down Pezuela wasn't going to change anything and that they should give back the blackmail box back and get everyone some peace. "You may hate me," Shane told Ronnie. "But you know what I'm saying."
Ronnie approached Vic about Shane's theory. He said it made sense, "he's got a point." Vic told Ronnie that Aceveda has the box.
Wyms, who was worried she was becoming more of a liability every day for the department, told Danny she's "not well" but that she wasn't done. She asked Danny if she'd like to be reassigned to her permanently. "How much do you know about lupus?" Wyms asked Danny.
Vic told Danny he wasn't going to sign the paternity paperwork.
Dutch went to Lloyd's house and confronted him about the murder, but Lloyd's mom interrupted and Lloyd convinced her that Dutch was just there to tell them that the investigation was closed.
Vic snuck up on Murray in her house, pointed a gun at her. He asked her how long Pezuela had his hooks in her. She explained that she'd made some documents in a racketeering ring in exchange for her keeping her brother. She said she hadn't fed any of Mackey's info to Pezuela's people. She said she kept him out of the mix because she didn't want to hurt him. "I'm in this so deep," she said, "and I don't know how to get myself out."
"You're talking to the right guy," Mackey said.
