Yes Studios, the company behind “Fauda” and “Shtisel,” has boarded “Wonder,” an eight-part futuristic thriller starring Noa Kirel, a rising Israeli actor and singer who finished third at last year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
Produced by Paramount’s Ananey Studios, the show also stars Yovel Lewkowski (Netflix’s “All Time High”). “Wonder” is set in a near future and revolves around the death of Noya, a 17-year-old girl who was apparently killed in a car crash. Her father Avner, a retired combat officer, and Daria, Noya’s best friend and a social media personality, join forces to investigate her death and discover Noya had a secret virtual life as part of a growing movement of teenagers swept up in the world of “wonder” — a new and mysterious virtual reality gaming app. Avner, who was mostly absent from Noya’s life, now faces a series of shocking revelations about his daughter.

When discussing the industry-wide changes needed for television to more authentically capture the lived experiences of disabled people, actor Eileen Grubba passionately implored the industry to end what she described as the tokenization of the community.
“The industry has got to stop saying, ‘Ok, let me go find some kid that’s cute that’s in a wheelchair and give them a series.’ That is soul-crushing to the people who’ve been fighting for decades to make a living,” said the “New Amsterdam” actor, who has faced disabilities since the age of 5.
Grubba shared her sentiments on a warm and sunny Thursday morning as industry trailblazers gathered at the Saban Media Center at the Television Academy Foundation in North Hollywood to discuss ways to ensure authentic disability inclusion in television in a “The Power of TV” panel hosted by the Academy Foundation.

Smile was a surprise hit for Paramount last year, grossing $217 million worldwide; Not bad for a film which was originally intended for a streaming release. The studio is clearly ready for more, as they’ve announced that they’ve slated Smile 2 for an October 18, 2024 release.
Given the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, there’s only so far development on Smile 2 can proceed, but Paramount wanted to nail down that release date nonetheless. Parker Finn will once again return to direct, and although he purposefully left the door open for a sequel, he said last year that he wouldn’t want to repeat himself.
“I do think that there is still a lot of interesting stuff to explore in the world of Smile,” Finn said. “There certainly are stones that I left unturned by design. And then there are other things that I, at one point or another, wanted to put in the movie,...

Dear Edward,
The news from Apple isn’t good.
The iPhone maker/streamer has canceled its Jason Katims-produced drama Dear Edward, making the series about the lone survivor of a plane crash one of Apple’s few scripted shows to get the ax after a single season.
Based on the book by Ann Napolitano, the series reunited Friday Night Lights creator Katims with leading lady Connie Britton and revolved around Edward (Colin O’Brien), a young boy who was the lone survivor of a plane crash. Taylor Schilling, Amy Forsyth, Carter Hudson, Anna Uzele, Idris DeBrand, Ivan Saw, Dario Ladani Sanchez, Eva Ariel Binder and Brittany S. Hall rounded out the cast. (Britton only had a one-year deal for the show, though Katims expressed hope of continuing her story should a second season have come.)

The award for best performance in a new scripted series at the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards went to Quinta Brunson for her role in Abbott Elementary.
“I feel like the least independent person here because of having wonderful supporters like Warner Bros., who’s in the room tonight, and ABC and Disney — the big bad one,” the actress said in her acceptance speech at Saturday’s ceremony, drawing laughter from the audience for the latter comment. She also expressed gratitude for the series’ cast and crew, “because of the spirit of my show and all that goes into it. We have a bunch of people … who come from making things out of nothing. And my show, Abbot Elementary, is made by people who make something out of nothing every day. We just got very fortunate to be supported by the studios and networks that we’re supported by, but we have that spirit.

The first two episodes of the eight-episode Paramount Plus series based on the 1987 thriller Fatal Attraction (watch it Here) are set to premiere on the streaming service on April 30th, and with that date swiftly approaching a teaser trailer for the show has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above!
Directed by Adrian Lyne from a screenplay by James Dearden (based on Dearden’s short film Diversion), the ’87 Fatal Attraction had the following synopsis:
For Dan Gallagher, life is good. He is on the rise at his New York law firm, is happily married to his wife, Beth, and has a loving daughter. But, after a casual fling with a sultry book editor named Alex, everything changes. Jilted by Dan, Alex becomes unstable, her behavior escalating from aggressive pursuit to obsessive stalking. Dan realizes that his main problem is not hiding his affair, but rather saving himself and his family.

After a few rough years, one could make a compelling argument that the broadcast comedy is back. We’ve got an awards juggernaut (ABC’s Abbott Elementary), some reasonably big hits (NBC’s Night Court, CBS’ Ghosts), plus a decent roster of above-average relative newcomers (NBC’s American Auto and Grand Crew, among others). It’s enough to restore your confidence in the format.
What does restored confidence buy you on a practical level? More specifically, how many episodes worth of patience does it buy you when your friendly neighborhood television critic tells you that a new sitcom with a wildly promising cast is doing something interesting, something with actual potential … but that in order to get to that potential, you have to sit through at least three or four episodes I’d (generously) call unamusingly generic and unsteady of tone? Since broadcast TV comedies are good again, do we...

Gina Rodriguez is getting a visitor from the other side.
The Jane the Virgin vet stars in ABC’s new comedy Not Dead Yet — premiering this Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 8:30/7:30c — as Nell Serrano, a journalist who moves back to the States from London after a broken engagement. Nell gets a job at the local newspaper where she used to work, but rather than picking up where she left off, Nell is assigned to the lowly obituary beat. And the gig comes with an unexpected and not entirely welcome perk: the people Nell is writing about appear to her as ghosts!

If 2022 will be remembered as the year that Game of Thrones won the battle to be crowned the next, uh, Game of Thrones, 2023 might go down as the year that Peak TV finally peaked. Yes, there are still literally hundreds of new scripted TV shows making their way to streaming platforms and many of them still cost an arm and a leg but as shows like Ted Lasso have proven, the ones with the biggest price tags don’t always guarantee success.
In keeping with THR’s tradition, we surveyed the scripted landscape for all the major players in town and have whittled down our annual list to a mere 10 shows that we’re going out on a limb to say will be the ones that cut through the clutter to become the talk of the town. Each December, acclaimed television series from the previous 12 months are discussed in the form of “best of...” lists. In these, the same shows are usually bandied around – some deserving (Better Call Saul), others not so (we won’t name names).
Often, though, several key titles are omitted – not because they aren’t any good, but because they haven’t been widely seen. This is understandable; after all, there’s an increasing amount of television to wade through every week.
Perhaps this is why these lists are skewed towards the high-profile releases – the ones that happen to be right there when people browse Netflix or whichever streaming service they have. But the fact remains, there’s a goldmine of under-the-radar shows out there to discover.
In the past year, all of the below deserved more love.

The Paramount Plus series based on the 1987 thriller Fatal Attraction (watch it Here) is expected to start streaming sometime in early 2023, and the folks at Entertainment Weekly have gotten their hands on a first look image from the series that shows the characters of Alex and Dan – played by Lizzy Caplan (Castle Rock) and Joshua Jackson (Dawson’s Creek) – talking to each other. These characters were played by Glenn Close and Michael Douglas in the film. You look the image over at the bottom of this article.

I’ll admit: Even as a professional television critic, I had to look up what cable or streaming service released “The Porter” this year. The CBC original series from Arnold Pinnock and Bruce Ramsey landed two Film Independent Spirit Award nominations Tuesday morning, and in order to be eligible, a TV show “must be available [in the U.S.] via network, basic cable, pay cable, pay television, pay-per-view, interactive cable, broadband, or digital distribution through streaming platforms.”
So where did the organization’s nominating committees dig up a series with only seven reviews on Rotten Tomatoes? BET+!
As a fan of television, not just a critic, these are the kind of nominations I love to see — and you should, too! Not only is the awards machine a duplicative endeavor, where the most popular picks get spotlighted so often it’s easier to tune them out than recognize why they’re winning this time, but...

The 2023 Independent Spirit Awards television nominations were announced Tuesday, December 13, three weeks after the corresponding film contenders were revealed. This is the third year that Film Independent will be honoring small screen programs and performers alongside movie creatives. Scroll down to see the full list of nominees for the 2023 TV Indie Spirits.
This year, the Best New Series (Scripted and Non-Scripted) and Best TV Ensemble Cast Spirit Awards categories remain intact, but the two individual TV acting ones have been overhauled. During today’s announcement, Film Independent President Josh Welsh said the organization hopes “to better reflect the diversity of incredible work being created” by establishing its gender-neutral Best Lead and Supporting TV Performance categories. 10 nominees are vying for each of these two awards, whereas only five apiece competed annually in the now-retired male and female categories.
