"Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" usually tops lists of the best Will Ferrell movies, but for many, the silly, raucous classic that is "Step Brothers" is simply unbeatable. The tale of 40-year-old man-children Brennan Huff (Ferrell) and Dale Doback (John C. Reilly) struggling to get along after their parents marry and move in together solidified its two stars as the perfect pairing. Ferrell and Reilly had worked together on "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" but it was 2008's "Step Brothers" that truly tapped into their shared talent for sheer buffoonery.
There are other movies like "Step Brothers" but none quite manage the absolute stupidity of two 40-year-old men living with their parents and acting like spoiled 14-year-old brats. With Adam McKay directing and co-writing, the film was in good hands from the outset, especially since the man behind most of the best early-2000s comedies, Judd Apatow,...

It was a Step Brothers reunion over the weekend, as Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly joined Snoop Dogg on stage to sing the bonafide classic “Boats ‘n Hoes”, which was robbed of an Oscar nomination we tell ya!
To celebrate Snoop Dogg’s 52nd birthday at the Best Night of Your Life 2 benefit show, Ferrell and Reilly got on stage at Los Angeles’ Greek Theater in outfits similar to those they wore in the “Boats ‘n Hoes” video, prompting a major audience reaction, as can be seen in a video posted on TMZ. 52 isn’t normally a big-bash sort of birthday, but it’s Snoop Dogg, so every day is an occasion to party. And if you can bring back the team of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly – who haven’t appeared in a movie together since 2018’s Holmes & Watson – all the better. Snoop Dogg even showed off his cake,...

Marriages end. Affairs begin. Sometimes there’s some overlap — and sometimes, if you’re famous, paparazzi are there to capture the entire mess.
Or, they were. Today it often feels like celebrity-stalking photographers lack the power they once held over their prey. A-listers now go to greater lengths to protect their privacy, tabloids have less cultural influence thanks to social media, and we’ve all had to reckon with the pain that that sort of media coverage inflicted on stars over the years, like Britney Spears.

This review for “The Bad Guys” was originally published on March 29, 2022.
Billed as “a caper,” there’s something refreshingly old-fashioned and simple about “The Bad Guys.”
No singing, no dancing, no moral lessons — it’s just a cartoon, with fast-talking, wise-cracking animals, lots of silly car chases and a host of fart gags.
Based on the comic books by Australian author Aaron Blabey and riffing on the heist-movie genre, “The Bad Guys” follows a band of bank-robbing villains. They’re not so much Reservoir Dogs as Mr. Wolf, Mr. Snake, Mr. Piranha, Mr. Shark, and Ms. Tarantula who, in public penance for their criminal ways, are sworn to go straight. For a bit.
Half the fun is trying to work out who’s doing the voice work. In a knowing nod to the “Ocean’s” movies, the handsome, silver-grey Mr. Wolf is continually being likened in the script to George Clooney,...

It was the casting decision heard ’round the world.
After Adam McKay brought on John C. Reilly to portray former Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss in HBO’s “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty,” the news reportedly led to Will Ferrell splitting with McKay as producing partners for joint company Gary Sanchez Productions. McKay’s decision to cast Reilly was the final blow to their relationship.
In a The Hollywood Reporter cover story, McKay recalled when there was some discussion about Ferrell joining the cast as Buss, though they ultimately went with Michael Shannon instead. “It really bugged Michael that we were breaking the fourth wall,” McKay said. “He kept saying, ‘I don’t like this. It throws me. I’m having a hard time.'”

On Christmas Day of 2018, Will Ferell and John C. Reilly teamed up for the third time (Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and Step Brothers) onscreen to play Detective Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, who investigate a mysterious murder at Buckingham Palace. Holmes and Watson started off on a bad note when Deadline originally reported that Netflix passed on buying the comedy because the streaming service was dismayed by the low-test scores that the film received prior to release. Therefore, Holmes & Watson was stuck in theaters against Vice, Aquaman, and Mary Poppins Returns. The main issue

The Big Short creator Adam McKay has detailed the breakup of both his Gary Sanchez Productions business and decades-long friendship with Will Ferrell.
In an in-depth Vanity Fair interview, McKay set out how his decision to cast Ferrell’s best friend John C. Reilly as Jerry Buss in HBO’s Showtime about the 1980s L.A. Lakers was the culmination of years of creative differences and led to a split that has yet to be repaired.
“Ferrell took it as a way deeper hurt than I ever imagined and I tried to reach out to him, and I reminded him of some slights that were thrown my way that were never apologized for,” said McKay. “The whole time it was like I was saying it out loud, ‘Let’s not become an episode of Behind the Music. November is the last month of the year for sensible viewing, before our TV screens become full-time broadcasters of golden retrievers saving Christmas and Will Ferrell wearing tights. Take the opportunity then, to get some good stuff in before the festivities.
In terms of good stuff, Netflix is offering the second series of the brilliantly wry and surprisingly touching The End of the F***ing World for any UK viewers who didn’t catch it on Channel 4. There’s also the excellent animated feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (we loved it. 5 stars.) as well as Boots Riley’s inventive, funny, political satire Sorry to Bother You (we also loved it. 4.5 stars.) On top of that, you can take a nostalgic trip to Capeside with all six seasons of Dawson’s Creek or watch emotionally repressed royals deal with the advent of the 1980s in season four of The Crown.

We certainly didn’t need another take on Roald Dahl’s 1983 novel “The Witches” after the superlative 1990 screen adaptation from director Nicolas Roeg and screenwriter Allan Scott, but if Robert Zemeckis’ 2020 version doesn’t cast as powerful a spell as its predecessor, neither is it a foul brew.
Collaborating with Kenya Barris on a screenplay originally written by Guillermo del Toro, Zemeckis throws in more good ideas than bad, which is a relief, considering his recent misfires like “Welcome to Marwen” and eye-assaulting CG horrors like “A Christmas Carol” and “The Polar Express.” And in the same way that Angelica Huston grandly (and campily) ruled the roost in Roeg’s film, Anne Hathaway wickedly assumes the throne as queen of her own coven here.
The action unfolds in the American South in the 1960s, with Jahzir Bruno as our unnamed hero, who goes to live with Grandmother (Octavia Spencer) after the death of his parents.

Henry Cavill Isn’t Surprised Netflix Is Being Sued For Making Sherlock Too Emotional In Enola Holmes
A frothy, all-ages mystery caper hardly seems like the type of movie that would find itself the subject of legal action, but the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle have filed a lawsuit against Netflix’s Enola Holmes regardless. While the majority of Sherlock Holmes stories are in the public domain and can thusly be adapted by anyone any way they see fit, a handful of tales remain with the author’s estate, and they’ve decided that Henry Cavill’s take on the literary icon is far too emotional for their liking.
The lawsuit doesn’t really seem to hold much water, especially when there are countless other adaptations that have put almost unrecognizable spins on Sherlock, including Will Ferrell as a bumbling idiot in Holmes & Watson, Johnny Depp as a gnome in Sherlock Gnomes, animated series Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century and Michael Caine as a...

The overwhelming majority of Sherlock Holmes stories are the property of the public domain, which is the reason why Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic literary creation will remain one of the most heavily adapted characters across all forms of media. In the last fifteen years alone, in fact, we’ve seen countless movies and TV shows that have reinvented the legendary sleuth in a variety of genres.
On the small screen we’ve had two modern day takes on the material with Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock and Johnny Lee Miller’s Elementary, two blockbusters with Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role, Ian McKellen’s somber drama Mr. Holmes, Will Ferrell’s terrible comedy Holmes & Watson and most recently, Henry Cavill lending support in smash hit Enola Holmes.
Next out of the gate is Netflix series The Irregulars, which stars Henry Lloyd-Hughes as Sherlock and Royce Pierreson as Watson.

Netflix have struck gold once again with Enola Holmes, as the movie dominates the platform’s Top 10 most-watched list while basking in the acclaim of critics and subscribers alike. The literary adaptation is currently on track to break all sorts of viewership records, but the streaming service still have a lawsuit to contend with based on Henry Cavill’s interpretation of big brother Sherlock.
Earlier this year, the estate of Arthur Conan Doyle sued Netflix for copyright infringement, despite the vast majority of Sherlock Holmes stories being property of the public domain. Of course, the author’s estate still retains the rights to ten works published between 1923 and 1927, but these latter stories will also enter the public domain by 2022.
The legal action argues that Cavill’s version of the legendary detective showing warmth and affection to his sister infringes on their copyright, as all previous Holmes tales had depicted him as cold and unfeeling.

Moonbase 8 might, by virtue of its title, evoke imagery from unintentionally-funny early-post-Star Wars cash-in sci-fi from a bell-bottoms-brandishing yesteryear such as space base farce Saturn 3, but the comedy is assuredly intentional in the case of the Showtime series, which has just released its full trailer and a November release date.
Intriguingly, Moonbase 8 is a six-episode half-hour astronaut comedy series that’s not even set in space, instead set in the final frontier of the Arizona desert, following the training exploits of bumbling NASA wannabees played by an auspicious comedy collective in John C. Reilly, Fred Armisen and Tim Heidecker. The onscreen comedic triumvirate also serve as co-creators along with Jonathan Krisel, who co-created and wrote for Armisen’s Sundance Channel TV vehicle, Portlandia and did the same for FX Zach Galifianakis comedy Baskets.
On that note, check out the full trailer for Showtime’s Moonbase 8 just below.

For some things, being a fan is almost like being part of a cult, it makes the utmost sense to you but not very much to others. And when it comes to the Eurovision song contest, it is one hell of a wild, weird, embracing and wonderful world to immerse yourself in. Arguably no movie can capture what Eurovision is because it is in itself magical, parodic and downright bonkers but in the unlikely and unexpected delight that is Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga we have a movie befitting of Eurovision.
Hailing from the town of Húsavík in Iceland, best friends since childhood Sigrit (Rachel McAdams) and Lars (Will Ferrell) have lifelong lofty dreams of not only entering but winning the Eurovision song contest and come 2020, call it fate, hope or a miracle but they get the chance to sing on the big stage for their country as duo Fire Saga.

Will Ferrell’s singing voice is like a combination of Fergie and Jesus, which makes him the perfect choice to get involved in an international singing competition, which his character does in the upcoming Netflix film, fully titled Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.
Ferrell was heavily involved with Eurovision, having co-written the script with frequent collaborator Andrew Steele, and also served as co-star and producer. The feature was directed by David Dobkin.
The premise is based on the long running international TV music competition, The Eurovision Song Contest. The contest, created in 1956, pits each participating nation from the European Broadcasting Union against one another, challenging them to write and perform an original song for a live TV and radio performance. Notable past winners include Sweden’s Abba in 1974 and Switzerland’s Celine Dion in 1988.

Judi Dench has won an Oscar (and received seven nominations), picked up two Golden Globe statuettes, received three Emmy nominations and collected 11 BAFTA Awards — and now one Golden Raspberry Awards nod for her performance in the critically panned “Cats.”
During an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Front Row on Thursday, host John Wilson informed the legendary British actress of her Razzie nomination for Worst Supporting Actress for playing the part of Old Deuteronomy in Tom Hooper’s recent live-action adaptation of the classic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.
“Worst Supporting Actor? Oh, am I? Oh, very, very good,” Dench said, laughing. “As the Worst Supporting Actor? Oh, well, that would be good.”

The film stars Rebecca Hall, Evan Jonigkeit, Stacy Martin and Sarah Goldberg, and was written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski. It follows a widow (Hall) who begins to uncover her recently deceased husband’s secrets.

Some members of the film industry have spoken out against Worst lists in recent years, deriding them as being merely snarky and negative. But I think they’re part of the yin and yang of good movies and terrible ones, laudatory criticism and constructive criticism. If, as a creator, you’re going to revere and appreciate a good review, then you also have to acknowledge that a negative review has equal merit. And without exploring our mistakes, we are doomed to make them again and again. Here’s hoping we don’t get a repeat of these low points of the year just past:
10. “Yesterday”
Richard Curtis and Danny Boyle, each talented in his own right, seemed on paper like a strange team, and their resultant collaboration indicates they should have quit when it was still on paper. The alternate-timeline notion of a world without The Beatles gets subsumed into...

Longtime producing partners Will Ferrell and Adam McKay are splitting up after more than a decade together.
The duo announced the break-up on Saturday and insisted that it’s amicable. Projects produced under their Gary Sanchez banner include “Vice,” “Step Brothers,” “Talladega Nights” and the Anchorman and Daddy’s Home movies. In 2014, Jessica Elbaum founded the Gloria Sanchez production company as a sister label of Gary Sanchez Productions with a focus on female voices in comedy.
“The last 13 years could not have been more enjoyable and satisfying for the two of us at Sanchez Productions,” Ferrell and McKay said in a joint statement. “We give massive thanks to our incredible staff and executives and all the writers, directors and actors we worked with through the years. The two of us will always work together creatively and always be friends. And we recognize we are lucky as hell to end this venture as such.

Longtime friends and producing partners Will Ferrell and Adam McKay have decided to go their separate ways professionally, TheWrap has learned.
Ferrell and McKay — who first met when they were both hired on “Saturday Night Live” in 1995 and are the creative minds behind films like “Anchorman,” “Talladega Nights,” and “Step Brothers” — are committed to working together on the lengthy slate of projects in development under their company, Gary Sanchez Productions, which was created 13 years ago with Chris Henchy, an individual with knowledge of the situation tells TheWrap.
Ferrell and McKay’s Sanchez banner and its female-focused offshoot, Gloria Sanchez Productions, will continue with all existing projects through completion, with the producers attached to those films and TV series remaining in place, the individual says.

Will Ferrell and Adam McKay met in 1995, when they joined “Saturday Night Live” on the same day, and went on to make “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,” “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” “Step Brothers,” and “The Other Guys” together. They’ve done all that through Gary Sanchez Productions, the production company also responsible for Funny or Die, but Deadline reports that the two have “mutually decided to branch out separately and refocus their creative efforts.”
That said, the two “remain close friends” and “will continue to support each other both personally and professionally.” Ferrell and McKay released a statement to Deadline confirming the move:

Maybe it’s the busy schedule for Jude Law, Robert Downey, Jr, and/or Guy Ritchie? Or perhaps, Will Ferrell’s “Holmes & Watson” tarnished the good name of the private detective? Either way, it would appear that Warner Bros. has pushed the release date for the upcoming “Sherlock Holmes 3” a full year.
According to Deadline, WB has decided that December 2020 isn’t a good date for ‘Sherlock 3,’ and has pushed it to Christmas 2021.

The 39th annual Razzie Awards hat-tipping the year’s not-so-great in movies are in, with Sony’s Sherlock Holmes parody Holmes & Watson, Melissa McCarthy’s turns in two movies not her Oscar-nominated one in Can You Ever Forgive Me? and even President Donald Trump among those getting dinged by the group.
Holmes & Watson, which bowed in December, was especially razzed, named the year’s Worst Picture, Worst Remake, Rip-off or Sequel, Worst Director for Etan Cohen and Worst Supporting Actor for John C. Reilly.
Star Will Ferrell apparently was snubbed by Trump, who took Worst Actor for playing himself in archival footage of documentaries Death of a Nation and Fahrenheit 11/9. Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway also got swiped in this year’s final voting.
The Razzies did note McCarthy’s Oscar-nominated performance in Fox Searchlight’s Can You Ever Forgive Me? with the Razzie Redeemer Award.

“A Quiet Place” and “Honey Boy” star Noah Jupe is joining Nicole Kidman, Hugh Grant and Donald Sutherland on the upcoming HBO limited series, “The Undoing,” an individual with knowledge of production tells TheWrap.
Based on the book “You Should Have Known” by Jean Hanff Korelitz, the six-episode series follows Grace (Kidman) in the wake of a spreading and very public disaster. Horrified by the ways in which she has failed to heed her own advice, Grace must dismantle one life and create another for her child and herself.
Jupe will play Henry Sachs, Jonathan (Grant) and Grace’s son. Precocious and artistic, Henry seeks to keep his family together as recent revelations tear them apart.
“The Night Manager’s” Susanne Bier is attached to executive produce and direct all six episodes of the series. David E. Kelley is writer, showrunner and executive producing via his David E. Kelley Productions banner.
