Daphne in Brilliant Blue
Tweekums14 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This twenty four part series (+2 OVA episodes) opens with protagonist Maia Mizuki taking the entrance exams for the elite Ocean Agency she is expected to get in but much to her surprise she fails; not only that she then gets evicted from her home. Things go from bad to worse when she can't find a job and gets robbed… then finally things get better and she gets a job with the Nereids. These are a group of female private detectives/trouble-shooters who take on the sort of jobs nobody else wants. Over the course of the series they take on a number of rogues; some more competent than others. As the series approaches its end it begins to investigate Maia's past… it is not what she always believed.

The series is set in the distant future on a drowned Earth where only a small number of island-cities remain; this means that much of the action is on the water or after the Nereids acquire a submarine under the water. The action is mainly played for laughs with the girls of the Nereids fighting each other as much as the bad guys… especially trigger happy Gloria and the violent Yu Park. Being somewhat shy Maia doesn't initially fit in which adds to the comedy. All of the female members of the Nereids wear a minimal amount of clothing but surprisingly it is shown in such a matter of fact way that one barely notices after a while. The only male member of the group is the office manager and he is one of the most hilariously pathetic individuals in anime! Most of the series is played for laughs and succeeds in providing plenty; towards the end things get a little darker as we learn about Maia's past but this is still interesting. The animation and character designs are okay if a little dated; I was surprised to learn it was made in 2004. Overall I'm surprised how much I enjoyed this; there were laughs and action aplenty and decent stories… it is just a shame they didn't wear a bit more as some people might find their costumes a bit too revealing for younger viewers who could otherwise enjoy the show.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.

Intresting

In the distant future, the earth is almost entirely covered by the ocean, with only small islands and floating cities on the surface. 15-year-old Maia Mizuki is turned down by the prestigious Ocean Agency, despite her exceptional skills and superior grades. After finally being evicted from her home, she joins the Nereids squad, a group of bounty hunters who seek fugitives from justice and other dangerous missions.

The animation can be a bit strange but it is not bad.

The dub was excellent too.

Good music too.

Overall decent.
