Richard O’Brien has revealed that the inspiration for his most famous creation — Dr. Frank N. Furter, the “sweet transvestite” mad scientist played by Tim Curry in the 1975 cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show — was inspired by his own experiences cross-dressing and grappling with his gender identity as a young aspiring actor from New Zealand living in London in the early 1970s.
“It actually comes from me,” says O’Brien, who wrote the book and score to the original Rocky Horror Show stage play that inspired the film (which turns 50 this month), and played the put-upon butler Riff Raff in both. “I used to beat myself up about the hand I was dealt. I don’t know how it works. I have no idea. I’ve read many tomes about the subject of the transvestic nature. It’s the cards you’re dealt. In a binary world it’s a bit of curse,...

After beginning his career in stage plays around London's West End and earning short-lived roles on random television shows, Tim Curry sashayed into stardom when he portrayed Dr. Frank-n-Furter in the 1975 cult classic film "Rocky Horror Picture Show." Originally debuting as a stage play in London, "The Rocky Horror Picture show" is a unique blend of old-school horror, campy sci-fi, and dramatic musical that no one expected to remain popular for nearly 50 years.
Since 1976, theaters across America and England regularly host midnight showings of the film, where the audience tosses rice, confetti, and insults at the screen. While this is more than enough to get viewers tossed out of any other showing, this behavior is encouraged during "Rocky Horror" screenings, and has become part of the viewing experience.
Along with catchy songs and fun dances, a majority of the film's long-lasting success rests on the glittered high heels of Tim Curry.

When powerhouse vocalist-actor Meat Loaf eulogized composer-producer Jim Steinman last April in Rolling Stone, the singer – who died Thursday at age 74 – said of his “Bat Out of Hell” partner, “We belonged heart and soul to each other. We didn’t know each other. We were each other.”
Meat Loaf (born Marvin Lee Aday) could not have stated the obvious better, as each man’s operatic, oversized talents were only matched by their level of grand theatricality, with thundering melodicism and melodramatic lyricism at the top of the list of their skill sets.
The best Meat Loaf songs – even those without Steinman’s tower-toppling compositions – come on in an epic, adrenalized rush. Even when singing a power ballad, Meat Loaf was loud and brazenly and heartbrokenly emotive. Here are some of the most dramatic and impactful of Meal Loaf’s musical moments:

As the year winds down, streaming services appear to be taking a step back, licking their wounds from this strange pandemic production season, and looking to a hopefully brighter future. This is all to say that Hulu‘s list of new releases for December 2020 isn’t quite its most inspiring batch yet…and that’s Ok.
Hulu’s biggest original title this month is undoubtedly The Hardy Boys. This adaptation of the classic boy detective novels is aimed at younger audiences and will premiere on Dec. 4. Then, near the end of the month, Hulu is bringing a new season of a show that is decidedly not for younger audiences. Season 9 of the very funny and very Canadian Letterkenny arrives on Dec. 26.
Hulu also has some recent movies of note coming in December including Amy Seimetz’s diabolical She Dies Tomorrow on Dec. 4 and children’s movie The Secret Garden on Dec.

Fox’s top entertainment executive is suggesting that the network was left with little choice but to part ways with Sleepy Hollow star Nicole Beharie, whose character, Abbie, was killed off in the show’s Season 3 finale.
“There were a variety of factors that led to the end of the season,” CEO Dana Walden told reporters during a Monday-morning conference call to tout Fox’s fall schedule. “It was not a decision that we wanted to make initially. We ended up being put in a situation where that was a decision that needed to be made.”

The Normal Heart, Larry Kramer's semi-autobiographical off-Broadway play about a New Yorker confronted with AIDS in the early years of the pandemic, has been a perennial "movie project." In the last couple of decades, Oscar winners Barbra Streisand and John Schlesinger have at some point in time announced they were going to tackle it, but to date no film version of The Normal Heart has reached the production stages. [Photo: Matt Bomer.] Now, enter Glee creator and movie director Ryan Murphy (Running with Scissors, Eat Pray Love), who optioned the film rights to the play last summer following its Broadway revival success: The Normal Heart won Tonys for Best Revival, Best Supporting Actor (John Benjamin Hickey), and Best Supporting Actress (Ellen Barkin). Murphy apparently hasn't been sitting idly. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Normal Heart already has a cast: Eat Pray Love's Julia Roberts (who'll next be seen as the...

Glee creator Ryan Murphy has been rumored to be pursuing several film projects of late. Beyond talk that he's hoping to helm the adaptation of the Broadway sensation Wicked, which once starred Glee guest stars Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, there are reports Murphy is Sony's pick to direct the Willow Smith-fronted Annie remake, and that Fox wants the king of Auto-tune and iTunes hits to remake The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Yet it's looking more and more like Murphy's directorial follow-up to his feel-good chick-flick Eat Pray Love will be his adaptation of the Tony Award-winning play The Normal Heart. It was last August that Murphy purchased the rights to the autobiographical drama about one man's experiences during the emergence of AIDS/HIV in 1980s New York. The first name to sign on was The Kids are All Right star Mark Ruffalo. But now THR reveals that Murphy's...

I know that I was not the only Gleek who was sad when Glee Season Three started; three new episodes were aired; and then reruns started up again. To keep my Glee momentum going, I decided to reminisce by popping my new copy of Glee Season Two on Blu-ray into my player.
The Season begins with Mr. Schuester (William Morrison) and the Glee Club kids back from their dismal showing at Sectionals. Wanting to secure a win at Sectionals this year, which would lead them to Nationals in New York City; the Glee Club sets off to find new recruits to join their motley crew.
A couple of notable changes this season are: Quinn (Dianna Agron) is now sans baby bump and is ready to regain her status as McKinley High’s queen bee and Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) and Artie (Kevin McHale) are no longer as she has...

For the past few weeks, a rather amusing saga has unfolded behind the scenes of TV’s “Glee,” a once lustrous musical series that represents roughly half a billion dollars in revenue for Fox and friends. But actors are leaving the choir room, some sooner than others. Why? Are they fired? Is there really a spin-off series? How? Isn’t this infinitely more interesting than an actual episode? First, some background.
It all started when series creator Ryan Murphy reiterated to The Hollywood Reporter that Chris Colfer (who plays Kurt on the series), Lea Michele (Rachel) and Cory Monteith (Finn) would be leaving the show by the end of the upcoming third season. Something he’s said before, actually. Their characters were clearly identified as sophomores at the outset, Murphy explained, so they would graduate as seniors in the ensuing episodes. (Because, of course, “Glee” needs to preserve the realism...
