Sandy Collora first made a name for himself when his fan film Batman: Dead End was released way back in 2003. Since then, Collora has worked mostly on his own, self-producing impressive independent genre fare including the sci-fi film Hunter Prey and now the creature feature Shallow Water. Shallow Water clocks in at a whopping 18 minutes, which seems to fly in the face of the popular sentiment that shorter is always better for films distributed online. While I'm not sure the content supports the lengthy run time, I do recommend saving this one to play on a big screen when you have the time to spare as it features some stunning jungle cinematography and practical effects work that will please fans of classic monster fare...

Sandy Collora, the talented filmmaker and artist who has brought us the sci-fi film Hunter Prey and the legendary fan film Batman Dead End has an awesome new short film he's directed called Shallow Water.
This is an original creature feature production has been a passion project of the filmmaker for years. After years of pressing forward and never giving up, he finally managed to raise the money he needed to develop it through a Kickstarter campaign that he launched.
I’ve been a fan of Collora’s work since I first saw Batman Dead End at a time when fan films and the internet were in their infancy. Over the years I’ve followed his career, and Shallow Water might just be one of his greatest accomplishments.

"Mother nature, mate. She can be a real bitch."
A few weeks ago, Batman: Dead End and Hunter Prey director Sandy Collora launched a Kickstarter campaign for a short film called Shallow Water, which will be the first part of a retro horror/sci-fi anthology feature film he plans on making.
There are only a few days left to get this thing funded and every little bit will help. It's so damn close, and it would be a complete and utter shame if this movie didn't get made. We've really gotta support the talented indie filmmakers out there who are trying to bring something new, different, cool, and unique into the world — especially when it involves genres that we love like this.
I included a proof of concept trailer for the film Collora released last year and it looks great! This is a film I could totally get behind, and...

Tim Burton, Joel Schumacher, Christopher Nolan, and Zack Snyder have all done what most superhero junkies could only dream of doing: direct a Batman movie. But there was one other filmmaker privileged enough to have suited up the masked manhunter for cinema, achieving almost overnight success in 2003 and a cult classic amongst Batman fans—without the “superpowers” of a million dollar budget or the tyranny of studio executives. The director: Sandy Collora. The film: Batman: Dead End.
“Behind The Mask”, a 90-minute documentary on the life and career of Sandy Collora, was shown recently at Monsterpalooza in Burbank, CA, telling the story of the indie filmmaker’s refusal to “sell out” to major studios and finding satisfaction in directing his own films.

Sandy Collora, the man behind the classic fan film Batman: Dead End, World's Finest and the indie sci-fi Hunter Prey, is kickstarting an art book called The Art of Creature and Design. Collora not only created these awesome film projects, but he also has worked as a character and creature designer for films such as Men in Black, The Crow, Predator 2, Little Monsters, The Abyss and more. They guy is very talented, and he brought together several of his talented friends and associates to help provide content for this book. Some of those people include Jordu Schell, Steve Wang, Joel Harlow, and Aris Kolokontes.

Borys Kit from Hollywood Reporter got the hot scoop tonight that Jason Momoa is in talks to join Batman Vs Superman as either Doomsday or Martian Manhunter.
In this humble author’s opinion, if this is turning out to be a Justice League movie then just come out and say it. Why DC is taking a page from the Jj Abrams playbook is beyond me.
Anyway, the rumor around town is that Doomsday is going to be the bad guy with Lex Luthor. Back in the day I was heavily into Doomsday when he killed Superman in The Death of Superman storyline, followed by Funeral For a Friend, and Reign Of The Supermen. I was officially done with Doomsday and thought he was finally dead back in 1995 when Dan Jurgens sent him to the end of time at the end of Hunter Prey. Boy I was wrong. They brought...

Batman Dead End is the fan film by which all other fan films are judged. It is hands down still one of the best fan films that has ever been made. Director Sandy Collora made the film back in 2003 with some of his friends to help kickstart his filmmaking career, and ended up making something pretty legendary. I would actually still love to see him take on a Batman movie. It's kind of ridiculous, I'd like to see him make more movies. He ended up doing a great little sci-fi film called Hunter Prey, and the last I heard he was developing a horror movie called Shallow Water. I'm not sure if that's still the movie he's currently working on though.
Collora has started a Kickstarter campaign to help fund a new documentary on the making of Batman Dead End for its ten year anniversary. It should prove to be very interesting,...

Fan favorite Batman: Dead End and Hunter Prey director Sandy Collera is developing a great sounding new monster movie project called Shallow Water, and he's giving the fans an opportunity to get in on the action. For those of you who have enjoyed the work of Sandy Collera over the years, then this sounds like a project you can get excited about.
The film is set in Baja Mexico around the Sea of Cortez, and the story follows group of adventurers who set out on a journey to find a mystical place known as Lago de Sangre... the Lake of Blood. Of course things go horribly wrong when a prehistoric creature starts to hunt them down taking the group out one by one.
Collera is giving his fans a chance to be a part of this film production. He is working with Kickstarter.com to raise the funds for his film project.

One of the cooler fan-made films you’ll ever see is Batman: Dead End (here). Since that short debuted, I’ve been interested in what director Sandy Collora would do next, and just a bit ago (well, more like 6 months ago), he and Maya Entertainment released Hunter Prey (review here), a kick-ass little sci-fi tale that seriously needs your love and attention.
Lucky for us, he’s gearing up for another feature film in Shallow Water and is going the route of Kickstarter for its funding. He’s kindly asked Killer Film to help, and so we are.
“Like my last film Hunter Prey, it is my intention with this project to harken back stylistically to the old-school genre films of the 70’s and 80’s — the very movies that inspired me as a kid to become a director — classics like Halloween, Alien, and John Carpenter’s The Thing… Films that...

The Film:
For the ideas and concepts director Sandy Collora has, and for the couple of dollars he has to do them, I don’t think there’s anyone else better in no budget execution than him. Who is he? You might remember him not by name, but by his amazing short film called Batman: Dead End (here), which not only gave us one of the better on-screen versions of Batman, but a true Aliens vs. Predator story than neither of the 20th Century Fox films did. Hunter Prey is an original idea, executed for less than $0.5 million and is one of the coolest sci-fi films you’re not seeing. That should change.
Clearly, Collora wears his influences close, as Hunter Prey feels like Star Wars and Planet of the Apes, with a little Enemy Mine thrown into the structure of a great Star Trek episode (the original crew, folks). The plot is simple,...

*Full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Maya Entertainment and Mprm.
**Here be some spoilers.
Director/writer: Sandy Collora.
First off, this reviewer freely admits that the science fiction genre is a real blind spot in this writer's expertise. After listening to director Sandy Collora's ("Batman: Dead End") commentary on Hunter Prey, there are some comparable anchoring points. Collora pulled some of his influences from the '70s Buck Rogers, Planet of the Apes, Star Wars and others for this December, 2010 release. Collora is also influenced by westerns, but Hunter Prey feels like an extended version of Star Trek's 1967 "Arena."
In this feature, a captive escapes from a downed spacecraft, known as the Prometheus. A three man military trained crew moves in to chase, while initially pinned down by accurate plasma fire. Did this reviewer just say "plasma fire?" Anyways, a cat and...

The likes of Inception and Toy Story 3 got all the acclaim last year, but which movies will you really watch again and again?
Wading through the endless lists of best and worst films of 2010 it quickly became obvious that all you needed to compile them was a pair of rubber stamps; Inception, Toy Story 3, Winter's Bone, etc for the best, The Last Airbender, Jonah Hex, Sex and the City 2, etc for the worst. All well and good, but these consensus selections give a distorted view of the year in film. There are hundreds of films that don't get a mention in such binary best/worst selections, films that are ignored for committing the crimes of not being either bold statements that approach "perfection" or for being so bad they're virtually unwatchable. These films in the critical no man's land are often the ones that become favourites, the sort...

There's no question that the biggest DVD and Blu-ray release this week is Christopher Nolan's Inception (with Shrek Forever After also likely to sell a ton of copies), but if you're looking to get some last-minute Christmas gift ideas, you might find a few other odds and ends hitting stores this week as well. Sandy Collora, director of popular fan films Batman: Dead End and World's Finest, has his first feature film Hunter Prey finally out on DVD today, plus the indie comedy Barry Munday starring Patrick Wilson and The Year of Getting to Know Us starring Jimmy Fallon. Some interesting non-fiction releases include Restrepo, Big River Man and Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel, plus the first volume of the Espn 30 for 30 series. All this plus Criterion Bd releases for Cronos and Videodrome, and for Reed Farrington, it's Trek Stars Go West! What will you be buying or renting this week?...

This Week in DVD & Blu-ray is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD and Blu-ray releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy and Fry’s. Inception Inception sets the bar for summer blockbusters. The film is a technical marvel—a thrilling, fun and smart dose of cleverly integrated action and compelling sci-fi gimmicks. Those are aspects I was able to enjoy when I first saw and reviewed the film [1], but it wasn't until a second viewing that I was truly able to appreciate the fascinatingly constructed filmmaking metaphor that Nolan had created. In Inception, a team of specialists (read: film crew) take their mark (read: the audience) on a journey, and attempt to surround them in a believable world, burying them deeper and deeper in a narrative in hopes that the emotional catharsis they experience will feel real. With its final moments,...

Got some great first run releases hitting DVD and bluray today as well as a few genre classics hitting Bluray for the first time, so without any more preamble let's just dive right in.
First up we have Inception, Chris Nolan's dream-hoping, mind-bending, psuedo scifi romp that blew the roof off the box office to, I think, many people's surprise. Hell, when a mainstream movie with Leo Dicaprio impresses even quietearth, you know you've got something different on your hands. Is it perfect? No. I personally think Nolan's brick and mortar obsession with keeping a "reality" aesthetic hurt the film. I mean, it's about dreams. Let loose a little! But there is so much to love about this film that I would rate it a must-buy release.
Next up we have Sandy Collora's first original scifi feature Hunter Prey (trailer). In case you forgot, Collora's the dude who made the fan film,...

It’s called Hunter Prey, a sci-fi thriller directed by Sandy Collora, and stars a few black faces you probably won’t recognize underneath all that make-up, as shown in the trailer below – Isaac C. Singleton Jr. and Damion Poitier notably (their pictures at the bottom of this post).
Synopsis: The Prometheus has dropped out of orbit. Communications and life support systems are down. Situation Critical: Status of Crew and Prisoner unknown. With orders to catch their Alien Prisoner alive the surviving crew of the spaceship Prometheus pursue a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with their escaped prisoner on a deserted and barren planet. But, who is the hunter and who is its prey?
A release date of December 7th is given… likely DVD/VOD.

Sandy Collora is perhaps best known as the man who directed the cult short film Batman: Dead End, praised by Kevin Smith as “possibly the truest, best Batman movie ever made”, albeit before the Nolan era.
Now, seven years later, Collora has thrown off the shackles of his short film career with the release of his debut feature film Hunter Prey, a science fiction spectacular with the same heart and soul as the glorious Sci-fi of the mid 1980’s.
HeyUGuys were fortunate enough to grab some time with the much-celebrated director and FX designer to talk about his new film, working with bigger budgets and the state of science fiction films today.

Sandy Collora is going to be huge. Yes, that’s purely my opinion, but it’s one a lot of studios shared after seeing what he could do in his eight minute short Batman film, Batman: Dead End.
Starting out at Stan Winston Studios, he went on to work with practical effects legends like Rick Baker and Rob Bottin and did concept design on Men in Black, The Crow and Predator 2. With his vision and talent for creature design he certainly has a touch of Guillermo Del Toro about him, and once the suits saw Batman: Dead End, they circled eagerly.
Unfortunately Collora fought an uphill battle with the aforementioned studios in getting his debut Hollywood feature sorted. This was incredibly frustrating for those waiting to see what he could do with a full feature and a healthy budget, and can’t have been a lot of fun for the man himself either.

After writing off their spaceship, the crew of the Prometheus are stranded on a desolate, desert planet and the prisoner they had on board has escaped. Can they catch their intergalactic jail breaker and is everything what it seems? Who is the hunter and who is the prey?
What a shame. This film is written, directed and pretty much everything elsed by Sandy Collora. If that name means nothing to you check out Batman: Dead End and I’ll see you in eight minutes and four seconds… Pretty great right? It’d be nice to see what that guy could do with some money and a full feature right? Yep, I agree – hence my disappointment.
I think if Hunter Prey was a short, say 30-odd minutes long it would probably be a lot more palatable. Unfortunately at 90 minutes it really drags. There’s some interesting central ideas, a tricksy manipulation...

Typically lost amongst all the big media hoopla of panels, booths, celebrity appearances, etc., is that San Diego’s annual Comic-Con hosts an International Independent Film Festival that runs concurrently along with the convention, which will be this year on July 22-25.
This is a full-fledged fest with short and feature-length films from all over the world that are typically either genre or comic book related. The full lineup of films screening this year is listed below. Screening blocks are broken up by genre: Action/Adventure, Animation, Comics, Horror, Documentary, Humor and Science Fiction.
Not listed below are the assorted panels that will be held specifically for the festival. Plus, on Sunday there will be an Awards Presentation followed by repeat screenings of all the winners.
The festival is doing something a little bit differently this year in that it’s not going to be held in the actual convention center.

Remember Sandy Collora? The guy who made that really hot short fan film called Batman: Dead End, where Batman fights the Alien then the Predator that was all the rage during Comicon 2003? The film that even Kevin Smith said was "An amazing piece of work, possibly the truest, best Batman movie ever made."If not then check it out the short by clicking Here to refresh your memory. The short was an excellent calling card and made so much noise it that got Sandy signed to Icm and soon he was being set up around town on the meeting circuit to meet with some pretty big folks at studios and production companies to pitch his other ideas. I always run into filmmakers who want to make a short film as a calling card and I always tell them that if their stuff isn't cool, high concept, or the execution isn't...

Among the stars of the upcoming new movie Repo Chick - Alex Cox's so-called "official non-sequel" to his 1984 sci-fi cult classic Repo Man - is Us actor/writer/producer Danny Arroyo.
The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September, is co-produced by David Lynch's production company (Eraserhead, Dune, The Elephant Man, Twin Peaks) and produced by Daren Hicks and Simon Tams (producers of Batman: Dead End, Searchers 2.0, Hunter Prey).
The official synopsis of the project is: "Against the background of the credit crunch and the subprime mortgage crisis in the Us, where repossessions of homes, cars and other forms of property is at a new high, the repo business has expanded to everything from boats, houses, aeroplanes, small nations...children."

We’ve been eagerly tracking the development of Sandy Collora’s indie scifi feature Hunter Prey - the feature debut from the director of the much loved short film Batman: Dead End - for a good long while now. We were drawn in by the initial images of Collora’s sterling armor design, more impressed when we had the chance to talk to him about his creation and got the low down on why he’ll take 1970’s scifi over the current variety any day, and were more impressed still when the first teaser arrived. And now we’ve got a first look at a brand new poster design for the film, direct from Collora himself. Very nice.

"Hunter Prey," is quickly moving towards a release date and Sandy Collora's science fiction horror film dazzles despite the before seen costumes. The latest film from writer and director Sandy Collora "Hunter Prey," stays in line with a science fiction thriller. The first high quality trailer is available for the film, set in the future, and the costumes will remind viewers of past science fiction films or Japanese anime. Not revealing any dialogue in the first teaser some of the plot, involving the capture of an escaped alien, can be seen in the short promo for the film. Starring Isaac C. Singleton Jr. the film will release shortly as the film is now finished with production.
The sparse story involves a special ops crew chasing an alien escapee into a dangerous part of the universe. The teaser shows a similar theme and the antagonist in the film is briefly shown behind reams of make-up.

So what’s up with Sandy Collora’s “Hunter Prey”? Glad you asked! Over at io9, they’re hosting an exclusive teaser trailer from Collora’s long-in-making sci-fi movie, which follows a group of soldiers who must track down an escaped alien convict after their ship gets blown to hell over a desert planet. Here’s what Collora himself says: Following the whole 70’s motif, just like we have with everything, the trailer is very much what I feel it should be: A brief glimpse of the characters, the world, and what the story is about. Not everything about the movie is revealed. I didn’t feel the need to tell or show it all, it’s not just all the “greatest hits” moments, believe me. I wanted to give everyone a taste of the film and get them excited about it, but I want them to discover the magic...

Back in November [1] we posted news about a throwback to late '70s/early '80s sci-fi/action films in development from Sandy Collora, the man responsible for one of the most well-known fan films of all time, Batman: Dead End [2]. Titled Hunter Prey, it clearly draws influence from both Star Wars and Predator, along with Collora's background in creature effects. A teaser trailer has just hit the web over at io9 [3], and it looks like either a really low budget sci-fi flick or the most expensive fan film ever made, depending on your point of view. The movie is about a group of "elite intergalactic commandos" who crash land on an unknown planet while transporting an alien prisoner. The prisoner escapes, and they must track him and bring him back alive. Okay, I'll agree that the production design has a great old school look to it, but at the moment,...

I am currently wiping away a sad tear over the fact that io9 got this before we did but no matter: the first teaser for Sandy Collora’s 1970’s style science fiction feature Hunter Prey has just arrived in all of it’s helmeted glory.
I’ve had the chance to see an early cut of the film and I can tell you that this trailer is very accurate to the look and feel of the film itself. It’s a beautifully shot and designed piece of work from a man who is obviously steeped in this stuff. He’s not putting on a pose here when he adopts this style, it’s where Collora has come from and where his heart remains.

Early images and concept artwork for Hunter Prey have been floating around the net for some time now, but now a first teaser trailer for Sandy Collora’s low-budget sci-fi project has been released. Some of you might remember Collora from his highly praised 2003 fanfilm Batman: Dead End.
Hunter Prey is about a group of soldiers whose prison ship crash-landed on an harsh and unknown planet while transporting an prisoner. Their mission is to recapture the alien creature and, for some unknown reason, to bring it back alive. This turns out to be much harder when the prisoner turns the tables and starts to hunt down the members of the team one by one…
The teaser looks great so far, even though the limited budget sometimes shows, I absolutely love the used look costume design (even though the commandos kinda look like Boba Fetts punky cousins…god damn mandalorian punks!

As promised, io9 has debuted the first teaser trailer for Sandy Collora's Hunter Prey today, and it definitely falls into the category of short 'n sweet. Hunter Prey is an indie sci-fi flick about a group of soldiers who crash land on a planet and lose their prisoner (sounds a lot like Pitch Black). There's not a lot of action in this trailer, just a few glimpses of it at the end, but it's great to finally see these guys in action and to know that the armor is more than just CGI - they were all practical suits made for the film. That said, I haven't seen enough yet to convince me this will be anything amazing, but it looks good so far. As we speak, fan filmmaker Sandy Collora is hard at work putting the finishing touches on Hunter Prey, a visual stunning flick that also promises to take indie scifi to new levels of coolness. The space-cadets over at scifiscoop got a look at the poster for the film as well as some new images.
Hunter Prey follows a team of special forces commandos who must recapture an escaped alien prisoner after the military transport ship carrying it crashes on a desolate and hostile planet.
People are pointing to the obvious Star Wars influence on the character designs but I say at least Collora has goof taste.

A little while back we ran the first news of Sandy Collora’s Hunter Prey, the new feature length science fiction picture from the director of Batman: Dead End. Collora has a long history with practical effects, having started his career working at Stan Winston Studios when he was just seventeen, and is taking very much a throwback, build-it-and-shoot-it approach to his debut feature. We had the chance to talk with Collora about the project recently and not only does he prove to be hugely insightful into the film making process, he is also a very entertaining read and provided us with a stack of new, exclusive images from the picture. The people at io9 have just featured the first look of Hunter Prey. It is an upcoming Science fiction film directed by Sandy Collora. He had made a film in 2003 titled Batman: Dead End way before the release of Batman Begins. He ran into a controversy because of the film. It was a huge hit in all quarters at the Comic Con. Now he is gearing up for the release of Hunter Prey that looks amazing.
The film centers around a crew of special forces commandos who must recapture an alien prisoner that has escaped after the military transport ship carrying it crashes on a desolate and hostile planet. How about a few more awesome photos today from another great indie sci-fi project? Our friends at io9 have the first look at a film called Hunter Prey being made by up-and-coming filmmaker Sandy Collora. That isn't a CGI suit of armor above - it's entirely real. Way back in 2003, before Batman Begins had ever hit theaters, Collora made a controversial fan film titled Batman: Dead End that premiered at Comic-Con (watch it online). It became an overnight sensation but before long, he encountered legal problems bigger than he could handle (and ended up getting a book written about them). Now Collora is back with an indie sci-fi project titled Hunter Prey that looks absolutely fantastic - as you can probably tell. Hunter Prey centers around a crew of special forces commandos who must recapture an alien prisoner that has escaped after the military transport ship carrying it crashes on...

Here's what you need to know: Sandy Collora, director of the uber popular fan film Batman: Dead End, is making a feature length movie with Nick Damon called Hunter Prey. It's an epic, yet intimate, scifi war film set on a alien world, and it looks crazy good.
Our pals at io9 scored a sit down with Collora to discuss the ins and outs of his experience making the film that's still in production. Below are a couple of Collora's quotes about the project:
"The film centers around a crew of special forces commandos who must recapture an alien prisoner that has escaped after the military transport ship carrying it crashes on a desolate and hostile planet."
"I love the Science Fiction and Fantasy films of the seventies and eighties. They were all very inspirational to me when I was a kid, and responsible to a large degree, for influencing...
