This week’s DVD column only features one certified blockbuster, but happily it’s a kick ass movie worth picking up and enjoying as soon as possible. The rest of the week’s offerings are smaller fare of varying quality including the incredibly fun Detective Dee, the too grim to be good Little Deaths, the better than expected Fright Night, the enlightening but sad Circumstance, and more. As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. Apocalypse, CA It’s the end of the world thanks to an impending impact from a very large asteroid, but where most films with that premise would focus on efforts to avert disaster this smaller budget indie has a bit more on its mind. John is using Earth’s final days trying to make up for lost time, but his attempts to right past wrongs meet with questionable results. As...

Synopsis:
Wry, cynical and full of off-beat humor, Apocalypse, CA is the story of John Parsons and his
ill-fated friends as they prepare for certain death at the hands of a massive asteroid, sex-
inducing drugs, a three-hundred foot giant, and a horde of other unfortunate problems.
Apocalypse, CA is an indie cult film of catastrophic proportions, featuring outstanding visual
effects from artists Ryan Wieber (Ryan vs. Dorkman) and Teague Chrystie (The Pacific) in this
feature film directorial debut by Chad Peter (behind the popular Internet short films, Sex, Drugs
& Natalie Portman & Roleplayed).
Mysterious radio personality and apparent part-time genie, ‘Sassy Boots’ (Elizabeth Sandy)
takes it upon herself to grant John Parsons (Nick Mathis) a few wishes five days before the
world is to be destroyed by an asteroid. Only problem is John’s wishes aren’t exactly calculated,
or even planned – the end result of which is a situation far worse than before.

Apocalypse, CA
Directed by: Chad Peter
Starring: Nick Mathis, Erin Bodine, Anne McDaniels
Rating: Nr
Release Date: Tbd
Trailer Score: 7/10
My Thoughts:
It’s the end of the world and I feel fine. Actually, watching this trailer, I don’t exactly feel fine but damn I’m curious. Director Chad Peter isn’t working with a huge budget but he’s able to hide it very well in this “world is ending” movie. Something he can’t hide, a giant woman. Nor should he. Perfectly teased, I have no idea if this more than 50-foot woman is fantasy, delusion, or an allegory about environmental destruction.
It’s actually a little shocking that a film dealing with the boredom of impending annihilation doesn’t already exist. That seems to be the hook before the action comes. Mathis slides into the role of the every man we can identify with while trying to understand this world.

Chad Peter is looking to make the step from internet sensation to full fledged film maker. The director of Sex, Drugs & Natalie Portman has recruited the help of special effects man Ryan Wieber - an Emmy winner and also the guy behind the Ryan Vs Dorkman online shorts - to create end of the world feature comedy Apocalypse, Ca. Here's the official word:

I do love it when someone says the name Six String Samurai, and that's even without seeing the great photography and insane storyline planned for this little indie. "A modern day dark comedy, Apocalypse, CA is the story of a group of friends as they prepare for certain death at the hands of an approaching asteroid. Wry, cynical and full of off-beat humor, Apocalypse, CA is in the vein of films like "Being John Malkovich", "Six-String Samurai", and "Garden State". The film is currently in post-production and theres a demo reel of footage after the break. We'll keep an eye on this one!
