A Slow Episode with a Satisfying Ending
declanoneil27 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Josh McDermitt gave a great performance. This was a very slow episode that dragged, but it gave us a great insight into Lance Hornsby's character and the episode revolves around him. The ending of the episode created so many questions and it was really satisfying.

Interesting But Could've Been Better
MamadNobari971 March 2022
I think we all knew the twists and turns of this episode when we they really got into Eugene's conspiracies. Except for the last scene and twist, which some might've seen it coming from a mile away but I didn't.

Anyway, because the twists of what Eugene was after were obvious, I think they should have condensed this story line and made this episode a plot a and plot b. Well I guess there were some other few scenes about other stuff like Carol and Connie, but the main plot and focus of this episode was about Eugene and his girlfriend.

I thought the style of this episode was nice and the story is getting more interesting, but they could've done more things with it and the writing seems half-assed kinda.

While it moves one of the unfinished plots of previous seasons and integrates it with the Commonwealth story line, it still kinda feels like a filler? I feel like the 24 episode made them do it this way and.

McDermitt Shines In A Slow-Burn Episode
kosem-7992727 February 2022
The episode is divided into three parts.

The main focus is on Josh McDermitt who plays the protagonist in this Scooby Doo-like episode which delves into one of the mysteries of the commonwealth. And while it leads to the uncovering of secrets from some of the commonwealth's biggest players, it also drags quite a bit. However, it does show us some of McDermitt's best acting moments in the show's entire run. As well as delves more into the dynamic of Lazaro & McDermitt's character and adds more layers to major Commonwealth players.

The secondary plot revolves around McBride's character as she takes a trip with one of the most powerful members of the community. This secondary plot does nothing other than show us how powerful this man is. It's very filler-ish, and an unnecessary add to an already suffered episode.

The tertiary plot is more necessary as it focuses on Ridloff's character alongside sister Theory as they attempt to uncover the "whys" in the events of the previous episode. This plotline adds layers to the character of Mercer & gives us some world building as it shows us how journalists work in the commonwealth, which may be very significant in the arc's long run.

All in all, a decent episode that suffers from a slow-burn A plot and two slightly filler-ish B & C plots but also works to show more of the Commonwealth's world building.

Uh oh
robson-0252328 February 2022
Slow, boring episode. Focusing on one of the weakest characters Eugene, some call him loveable, I find him tedious. This second part of the season started so well, creative camera work, good interesting dialogue and writing. This episode felt so simple, like the crew needed an easy week off. Also random side note but the music felt super goofy this episode. Maybe I've just not noticed it before idk. I just don't see where they are going with it, and I don't always mind that as long as the getting there is interesting. Hoping things pick up!

DIFFERENT CHAPTER
nilteixi27 February 2022
A chapter where the focus is not on our main characters, the good thing about the chapter is the end, where we discover new information. The best of this chapter is how Carol is getting more involved in the community to discover how the Commonwealth really is and Connie trying to bring to light information that people don't know. In short, a good chapter and different from the rest.

Rogue Element is a neo-noir driven episode focused on Eugene and you can anticipate brilliant acting from McDermitt, it's quite slow paced
Holt34428 February 2022
Episode 11.11 titled "Rogue Element" is entirely focused on the Commonwealth storyline. The premise for episode 11: Eugene looks for Stephanie after she mysteriously goes missing. Connie investigates a story on Trooper Davis. Carol helps Hornsby with a labor dispute at a drug farm. I think the editing and pacing was perfect in this episode, with some great transitions. But after the previous episode which had almost the whole cast in it, I was a little bit let down how this episode was more character focused and honestly it was the right thing to do as Eugene is the most important character of the Commonwealth arc. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick penned the script for 11.11 and you might know him from writing Aquaman and its sequel, the overall writing is brilliant and the dialogue along with its characters are top notch, everything feels natural and simply perfect. Overseen by Angela Kang, the writing for this episode is consistent of the previous episodes in Part 2. The episode uses the big budget wisely, making it brilliant both technically and the acting and so on, the camera work are brilliant and it's visually a great episode, an overall impressive production.

TWD veteran Michael Cudlitz returns to direct 11.11 "New Haunts" and as usual he doesn't let the viewers or the show down, Cudlitz uses the experience as an actor and storyteller to make an episode worthy of your attention. There's so much things he does right with this episode, though I don't think it's the best episode he have directed but it's close to a perfect episode, the scenes with Eugene were incredible and mesmerizing. The cinematography is once again breathtaking and incredible, the way it was shot and so on, just brilliant. The sets were detailed and perfect, and so are the art and production design. Superb sound design and a musical score both gripping and dramatic. It's one of many things on the technical side of things that the show succeeds perfectly with.

As this was a direct follow-up to the previous episode which ended with our survivors and us viewers learning about the faction inside Commonwealth that wants to make a change. The best performances were Josh McDermitt as Eugene Porter in possibly one of his best performances, I also think Josh Hamilton as Lance Hornsby is another performance worth praising. Michael James Shaw's performance as Mercer wasn't incredible but the talent that man has in speaking more with his face than his words needs some praise, he's perfect as Mercer and I'm so glad they cast him. I had my doubts at first regarding Paola Lázaro as Juanita "Princess" Sanchez, though I believe her interpretation of Princess is perfect if you're comparing it to the comic book counterpart, I think her acting isn't quite on the same level as other lead actors like Josh McDermitt but she just have this likeability to her and her performance contains everything the character is memorable for, so does Làzaro need to give brilliant performances each episode? I don't think so, if she keeps nailing the character then that's enough for me.

"Rogue Element" has lots of things that fans of The Walking Dead will like, Eugene Porter gets a lot of love in this episode and for a good reason. Carol also gets a lot of attention and thus we get to see more of the world, locations around the city and Michael Cudlitz along with the cinematographer helped create some stunning looking shots, beautiful locations that they found. The episode takes its time with world building, moving the story forward immensely but also giving new characters like Mercer and Hornsby lots of screen time and developing then into more fleshed out characters which is needed. The neo-noir style of storytelling in this episode was so right and Cudlitz did it justice. Angela Kang is truly giving the Commonwealth arc a lot of depth and I'm liking it a lot, Part 2 continues to be amazing and "Rogue Element" was amazing but possibly too slow paced for some.

One of the most creative episodes TWD has ever done !
tristan_1927 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
What a STELLAR episode ! Michael Cudlitz at the helm, you get to experience phenomenal cinematography, camera establishing shots and soundtrack.

Hornsby is a fantastic character and is already taking his place in the all time greats. Eugene's performance is out of this world, channeling his Benoit Blanc investigating mode on this neo-noir tale, as the story progresses latching into any clue to find Stephanie.

The side stories are enjoyable enough. Carol works a little more of her magic, trying to size who Lance is. Connie and Kelly continue to push forward in the Tyler Davis affair. But it is the double reveal at the end, as Eugene and Lance have a magnificent face off, that hits all the right notes and provides a bone chilling experience.

WOW...

A solid Eugene centric episode
theomniman-596223 March 2022
Why the hate? I found this episode to be pretty decent. Eugene did a good job (as always) and the story moves on with a decent twist. Looking forward to the rest.

Make It Make Sense
gbarrett-399412 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Can someone tell me where they are getting mangos in an apocalypse? I know that there is trade, etc, but there is no place near Virginia to grow mangos. Also have supply lines gotten shorter? They don't have cars or planes. At this point it is clear it's the last season as they just throw in anything. Next they will be eating dodo meat sandwiches, because...why not?

Decent
mrsir-8218227 February 2022
Standouts are both Josh's (Mcdermitt and Hamilton) as Eugene and Lance, they stole this episode really. Loved the mystery aspect but felt like a lot of filler, and we also knew about the big plot 'twist' anyway.

Feels like great setup, but not the best on its own.
frankiesilver-9183626 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was alright. The additional one-month time skip is unexpected but it allows them to go straight to the fake Stephanie reveal which was nice to finally get. Although the Max/Stephanie reveal didn't do much for me personally as I knew it was going to happen going in. Still, Eugene's actor, Josh McDermitt, easily gave his best performance to date. He sold the mystery storyline 100%.

Aside from that, the Carol/Lance stuff was pretty interesting. Lance is just incredibly intriguing to watch and I really hope his secretive stuff goes even deeper with CRM.

The Connie/Kelly plot seems to also be setting up a lot of crazy stuff for the season with the list given to them, being forced to write propaganda, and especially Mercer and Max being siblings.

Mercer was also so badass in this episode. Every single time he's on screen is so captivating. They are setting up for some amazing stuff with him.

So in general this is a great setup episode, but I'm just ready for some serious s*** to go down.

Now that the writing is at the top, the ratings are going down...
christopherhq1 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Well, I gave many reviews on TWD and it was around 1 and 5 stars for reapers arc. And for a good reason, it was bad writing, bad coherence, bad tension, bad characters.

But now that we are in the Commonwealth, I must admit that they have upped what I thought of being unsavable.

The Commonwealth's arc is the better thing since season 9. We don't put explosions, CGI fireworks, but we have a great writing, and a great acting.

I love Eugene and his evolution and it is still good to develop him. Even if the plot twist at the end was predictable by the credits, etc, everything around was well-written.

The dialogue, the face to face between Eugene and Lance, where Lance is at the top of the stairs and Eugene at the bottom, the obsession of Eugene about Stephanie, Princess and Eugene... It's well-done, and it's good to see these characters that can be developped more instead of seeing the ones who are already at their max.

Carol and Lance duo is again a good thing. They are collaborating, but we know that sometime in the future, one will betray the other. We can see that with Lance at the end who is smarter than we think.

So it was a great episode that gained my full interest in this arc. I hope people will like it because when it's bad like reapers, everyone rates 12/10, but when it's good like Commonwealth, everyone rates way lower because there's no action.

I want to say : good writing and good characters > fanservice and action.

Rogue Element
bobcobb30128 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I am as critical of the Eugene character as anyone is, but I will say that this episode focusing on his journey to track down his radio pen pal, finding out the dangerous truth and learning to move on from it was quite entertaining.

The Walking Dead can still pick some creative plots to build off of and give fans an intriguing story when it wants to. Where the show fails and flounders is when they throw together episodes with predictable spook moments and overstate the impact of legacy characters simply walking around and not saying anything relatively new as a form of high-quality entertainment.

A much needed episode
Real_EzzYy3 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode wasn't that exciting like the others, but without it, we wouldn't been able to confirm that Lance isn't running the commonwealth without hidden secrets. The acting is also on point just like the other episodes and it proves how perfect the cast for this show is. Putting Eugene in this detective status really shows that he would do anything for love, and I loved it!

A missing person
AvionPrince1631 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Eugene start to investigate because Stephanie is missing and he try to reveal a conspiracy inside the commonwealth. Some workers ask more money for the production. Still interesting episode and we have now a detective genre about who put in trouble Stephanie. And that make it more interesting in a sense that we want to know what happened to Stephanie. Eugene will seriously doubt about his opinions on the commonwealth after some problems. But the search for Stephanie still keep going. And he will found Stephanie and doubt about the director of the commonwealth. And he will found the truth and found that Stephanie just took orders from the Director. And that Break Eugene and his illusions. Nice episode with some nice revelations, surprises and new considerations with the director and be more careful with him in the future. Pretty nice episode.

Please Lord Help us...
scaryoutcome11 March 2022
How can you kick off the second half with an amazing episode, followed by 2 straight dull, boring, pointless, absolutely idiotic episodes.

I mean come-on creators - I thought we was well and truly over the point of character story episodes, especially now this is the last season.

I mean, since when did it go from Zombie Horror to Detective crime thriller - If this was the first ever episode or a completely different episode for a different show, then fair enough - Episode would of been pretty decent.

Nobody rarely cares about Eugene and his mid-life crisis anymore - regardless of how well he acts.

2 stars for last 2 episodes.

Mother Puss Bucket?
james-patrick-732-46346828 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I really did enjoy the episode. It provided a deeper dive into the shady side of the Common Wealth. I wish there was a way for someone to answer this question but you've got this drug maker who's getting paid by Hornsby but what the heck is he going to spend it on? For 11 seasons of The Walking Dead, there has been no reason for currency of any kind and why would there be? I understand there's currency in the Common Wealth but these drug dealers were on the outside. I think we all knew Stephanie was fake Stephanie and Milton's assistant was the real Stephanie but why? I guess we'll find out soon. Overall it was more than a filler episode. It's moving the story along even though the main characters weren't in it.

So What Did We Learn Tonight?
sevenlilxenos7 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So far I have rated every episode of TWD between 7 and 9 with the occasional 10. So why in good conscious can I only give Rogue Element a 6?

I think most would agree TWD is fictional, although its handled in way which feels possible if there was a world wide plaque (COVID on steroids) other than of course the part about the dead coming back to life as in George A. Romero's Night Of The Living Dead and all the other Zombie movies it spawned.

TWD is NOT a fantasy show like LOTR or Harry Potter yet Rogue introduced a fantasy Element or sub-plot which totally took me out of my usual suspension of disbelief and seriously caused me not to be able to enjoy the rest the show. Not that there was a whole lot more other than Eugene playing like he was Detective Sam Spade from the noir classic The Maltese Falcon.

Now I'm neither a pharmacist nor a horticulturist and I accept the fact that almost every generalization has exceptions. But I do know a little a little bit about narcotics, perhaps more than I should.

Morphine (and with another processing step or two heroin) comes from certain poppy plants. Not poppy seeds for bagels or pretty looking poppies for flower shops, but the ones from which you get the needed extract or alkaloids for morphine or codeine.

80% of the morphine type of opium poppy plants come from Afghanistan with the rest mainly coming from South East Asia. The drug cartels also try to harvest the morphine poppies in Columbia and Mexico, but its not the same. For example, the Mexican grown poppies processed for morphine and then heroin comes out brown and is made into Black Tar not the nice China White used for morphine and then heroin grown in Asia.

Like other plants it is all about soil and climate. If the US could grow and cultivate potential morphine producing poppies don't you think they would? Especially seeing how we consume more than any other country does per capita?

Sure Virginia or wherever could possibly grow poppies for seeds or flowers, but not the ones which can then be processed to morphine for the hospitals to use during and after surgeries?

12 years or so into the ZA surely all of the oxycodone and fentynal has been long gone along with other similar drugs which perhaps could allow non-morphine poppies to be converted to morphine. So wouldn't it be impossible or fantasy for The Commonwealth's "partners" to ultimately produce morphine as shown or suggested?

Of course Carol was brought along because she wants to move Zeke up the surgery waiting list before its too late as more morphine means more surgeries, but this isn't the same as finding a stash of wine.

What would have made a whole lot more sense is if they were growing and then trading marijuana to help ease the pain and side effects of those who have cancer and other diseases.

Hopefully this one issue doesn't ruin the show for too many other people as it did for me. IMO this one item just seems symptomatic or symbolic of the deterioration in the quality of TWD as a whole just as if they introduced magical wands to instantly start manufacturing bullets and other ammunition.

Best Line: (Princess) You think you know someone and then its like you never met them, yah that sucks man.

6.5/10.

This episode was boring!

Like, really slow-moving "I don't care" boring.

"You mother pus bucket!" Someone actually said that. In a post apocalyptic wasteland. They "watched their language". LOL.

So stupid. This series is just so stupid now.

The episode masterfully intertwines personal vendettas with larger societal issues, highlighting the dangers of unchecked power and the ease with which corruption can fester
fernandoschiavi4 April 2024
Eugene has entered into a relationship with Stephanie and tells her he loves her; she says she loves him too, shortly after which she mysteriously disappears. Eugene becomes obsessed with finding Stephanie and breaks into a man's house looking for evidence, but fails, and Princess insists that she must have broken up with and abandoned him. Eugene soon finds Stephanie again colluding with Lance for an unknown task, and gets Lance to confess "Stephanie" was a plant named Shira who was used to get Eugene to confess the location of Alexandria due to too many inconsistencies during the group's auditing. Lance tells Eugene the group is better off now despite his heart being broken by Shira. Meanwhile, Connie and Kelly investigate the Commonwealth military and their treatment of Tyler Davis, and Carol helps Lance deal with a neighboring community whose leader is extorting the Commonwealth for money. Eugene is later approached by "Max", who reveals herself to be the woman he was in contact with over the radio.

"Rogue Element" propels "The Walking Dead" into a riveting exploration of conspiracy and betrayal, further delving into the complex socio-political landscape of the Commonwealth. This episode marks a significant turning point, as it unravels the facade of the community's idyllic life, revealing the dark undercurrents that flow beneath its surface. The tension is palpable from the outset, as characters begin to question the integrity of their leaders and the true cost of the peace and security they have been afforded.

The episode masterfully intertwines personal vendettas with larger societal issues, highlighting the dangers of unchecked power and the ease with which corruption can fester in a community desperate for order. The narrative is dense and compelling, with each twist and turn exposing more about the Commonwealth's true nature. The storytelling is adept at maintaining a sense of urgency and suspense, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats as the protagonists peel back layers of deception to reveal the truth.

Central to "Rogue Element" is the theme of trust and the ramifications of its breakdown within a community. Characters are forced to navigate a labyrinth of lies and half-truths, challenging their perceptions and loyalties. This episode does an exceptional job of showcasing the emotional and psychological toll of such revelations, with standout performances that convey the weight of disillusionment and the struggle for truth in a world where it is a rare commodity.

The episode's cinematography and direction enhance the atmosphere of tension and uncertainty, using shadows and tight frames to evoke a sense of confinement and paranoia. The visual storytelling complements the narrative's themes, emphasizing the contrast between the Commonwealth's outward appearance and the murky reality that lies beneath.
