The Casting Society (CSA) announced film nominees for the 39th Artios Awards honoring the contributions of casting pros in film, TV, theatre and commercials, a list that features the casting departments for numerous Oscar-contending films including “Oppenheimer,” “Maestro,” “The Color Purple,” “Rustin,” “American Fiction,” “The Holdovers,” “Barbie,” “Past Lives” and “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

Winners will be revealed on March 7, with celebrations taking place on that day in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, in New York City at the Edison Ballroom, and in London at a venue to be named. Writer-director-producer Ava DuVernay will be presented with the Lynn Stalmaster Award for career achievement during the ceremony.

Exclusive: Film Movement has taken North American rights to the drama, How I Learned to Fly, starring Marcus Scribner (Andre Johnson Jr. on ABC-tv’s Black-ish), Lonnie Chavis with appearances by Method Man and Cedric the Entertainer. The movie will be getting a limited theatrical release in December, followed by a release on all leading home entertainment and digital platforms.

In its first full-on post-pandemic edition, Locarno roared back into action as an industry hub over Aug. 3-9, smashing attendance records with delegates at industry arm Locarno Pro soaring from 2019’s prior record of 1,040 to 1,300.

Berlin-based sales agent Pluto Film has picked up world sales rights to Czech writer-director Adam Koloman Rybanský’s comedy Somewhere Over The Chemtrails, ahead of its world premiere in the Panorama section of this year’s Berlinale.

German sales company Pluto Film is under new ownership following its sale by founders and former CEOs Heino Deckert and Torsten Frehse to Daniela and Benjamin Cölle.
Deckert and Frehse, who established the Berlin-based shingle in 2015, are stepping down to focus on the activities of their respective companies, the Leipzig-based production shingle Maja.de and Berlin film distributor Neue Visionen.
The new husband and wife team will head Pluto Film as co-CEOs, with Daniela Cölle also serving as head of acquisitions. Cölle has worked at the company since its launch, initially as festival manager.
“We are very thankful to Torsten and Heino for trusting in us as new owners and CEOs,” she said. “We believe in engaging global cinema by emerging talents, both arthouse and cross-over. We are devoted to bringing quality feature films to the international market and worldwide audiences.”
