Having found cult success with the Chanel 4 sitcom "Man Down", Greg Davies moves to the BBC with "The Cleaner" - a remake of (of all things) a German sitcom, which is altogether more subtle than "Man Down" but still not entirely above farce. I found it genuinely funny at times, and I do like Greg Davies but I can already see me forgetting about the show entirely in a few weeks.
Each episode sees Paul 'Wicky' Wickstead (Greg Davies) arrive at a crime scene to undertake the specialist cleaning of the aftermath. He is usually forced to interact with a resident at the property, which starts as combative, but usually a bond is formed later on. Each interaction forces Wicky to think about how his own life has progressed and whether it's all that he hoped for.
So yes, overall a much more highbrow series than "Man Down" was, but still plenty of opportunity for Davies to swear and career into things. Each episode has at least one guest star, they set their stall out early with Helena Bonham Carter but the others include David Mitchell, Ruth Madeley, Stephanie Cole, Layton Williams and Jo Hartley.
It's always harder to review a comedy, as taste here is such a personal thing. I'd say that I generally found something amusing in each episode, but if you ask me now, I can't really remember the plot of any of them, let alone what it was that made me laugh. I would say, I did feel the show was confused as to who it was laughing at. Is Wicky supposed to be the voice of reason railing against these millennials and their strange and confusing ideas, or is he an idiot bumbling around a world that's moved on since the 90's? Too often across the run he's both or neither.
I liked the show well enough; I'd probably come back and watch more - but I can't see me revisiting it again any time soon.
