Two Very Different Movies Look to Divide Up the Weekend Box Office Business
With Disney’s Beauty and the Beast continuing to dominate at the box office with $90 million this past weekend, and Saban’s Power Rangers (Lionsgate) also doing exceedingly well with $40 million in second place, you wouldn’t think anyone would try to release a movie that might get overshadowed by those two blockbusters.
That said, what’s interesting about this weekend is the fact there are two very different movies that are competing very heavily for second place with DreamWorks Animation’s latest animated family film, The Boss Baby (20th Century Fox), taking on the live action English remake of Ghost In The Shell (Paramount), starring Scarlett Johansson. In most cases,...

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Fans of his work may revel in the high-concept surrealism of director Michel Gondry’s filmography, while other audiences not attuned to his style may find it abundantly aimless and self-referential. Either way you look, Gondry’s filmography, music video and commercial entries reflect the work of an undeniably smart, adventurous filmmaker. His latest film “Microbe & Gasoline” reflects a bit of a departure for the 53-year-old director: There are still houses on cars and planes flying backward, but unlike the fantasy intrinsic to films like “The Science of Sleep” or “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” this story involves two young teens (largely drawn from Gondry’s youth) constructing their dreams into reality for themselves.
What does it mean to show these dreams cinematically? How can a director get there? And how is the understated “Microbe & Gasoline” still as much a Michel Gondry movie as he’s ever made?

Who wouldn’t want to go to Italy in the summer for good food and entertaining conversation with a clever traveling companion? Quite a few people did just that, at least vicariously, via IFC Films‘ The Trip To Italy. The light-hearted sequel to The Trip easily had the weekend’s highest bow among specialty films, grossing $71,577 and averaging a tasty $23,859 in three theaters.
“The Trip to Italy opened with one of the highest per-screen (average)s of the summer, playing to sold-out shows this weekend in New York and Los Angeles,” IFC said in a statement. “The Michael Winterbottom-directed sequel has received wonderful reviews and strong word of mouth.” As with The Trip, which also starred Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon on a food and talk travelogue across U.K. countryside, the road ahead looks wide open for the Italian Trip. The original opened in June 2011 with a $12,984 PTA in 6 theaters,...

In this weekend’s specialty box-office debuts, IFC Films hopes to replicate the critical and commercial success of Michael Winterbottom’s first amusing little travelogue/talker of a feature, The Trip, with a semi-sequel, The Trip To Italy. The second Trip again stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon; the entertainingly garrulous pair on yet another jaunt across restaurants, countryside and philosophy. The latest Trip will bow in NYC and La this weekend after a successful Australian run earlier this summer (or their winter).
Frank, a British-Irish-American drama from Magnolia Pictures featuring Michael Fassbender that had runs at Sundance and SXSW, bows in only one U.S. theater this weekend. Frank centers on an eccentric band, giving Fassy fans a chance to hear the Oscar-nominated actor sing, albeit from behind a mask (he’s not bad, actually).
Other notable new films include Philippe Garrel‘s Jealousy, which Distrib Films will expand...

They don't make funny movies any more, right? Wrong. If you're looking for a laugh, then here are some you may have missed...
For this list, blame The Hangover Part III. It was whilst walking out of that film that I got into a chat with someone, who was bemoaning the lack of genuinely funny movie comedies. Certainly, big budget Hollywood comedies have no end of problems right now - with the occasional exception - but I couldn't help thinking of the many neglected gems that had gone through my DVD player over the past decade or so.
As such, I started to put this list together. It's inevitably subjective, as one person's comedy is another person's snore fest. But I've tried to dig out a mix of comedies from the past three decades that have either flown under the radar completely, or...

Chicago – It’s been six years since award-winning music video helmers Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris released their feature directorial debut, “Little Miss Sunshine.” It went on to become one of 2006’s most beloved sleeper hits and garnered a busload of accolades, including two Oscars. Yet it took many years for the couple to find the perfect script for their sophomore effort.
They found it in Zoe Kazan’s remarkably inventive debut screenplay, “Ruby Sparks,” which tells the story of a lovesick author, Calvin, whose dream girl suddenly materializes in his apartment. Kazan also happens to be the real-life girlfriend of Paul Dano, who memorably played the brooding, oft-silent teen Dwayne in “Sunshine.” The film stars Dano as Calvin, Kazan as his tailor made love, Ruby Sparks, Chris Messina as Calvin’s bewildered brother, and a talent-packed ensemble including Annette Bening, Antonio Banderas and Steve Coogan. The first time the indie-rockers Devotchka penned a score to a movie, they made a pretty big splash with the killer soundtrack to Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris' "Little Miss Sunshine" that they co-wrote with composer Mychael Danna ("Moneyball"). It's been often imitiated and certainly often-reused (just give a listen to "The Winner Is" below, which has become a type of go-to score for indie-film trailers). Devotcka frontman Nick Urata composed most of 2009's "I Love You, Philip Morris" score by himself and he's done the same for his reteam with Dayton and Faris, "Ruby Sparks."
Being released courtesy of Milan Records, the 20-track soundtrack album combines French pop tunes from Plastic Betrand ("Ca Plane Pour Moi"), Sylvie Vartan ("Quand Tu Es La") and Holden ("Une Fraction De Seconde") along with Nick Urata's score. Written by Zoe Kazan, starring Kazan, Paul Dano, Antonio Banderas, Annette Bening, Steve Coogan,...

Honestly, if I was forced to judge Summer 2012 at first glance, I would say it was pretty weak. Compared to 2011 and 2010, there's just not as many movies to look forward to. While it seems easy to write off this Summer as a dud, I have three reasons why it might actually be awesome; The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, and Prometheus. Honestly, that's all Summer 2012 needs in order to be one for the history books. Even then, there's still more than enough films to warrant your attention this summer. To help you sort through them all, we've once again compiled all the most interesting films of the season into four easy to read, informative guides. For the next four days, we'll take you on a journey through the best cinema has to offer in Summer 2012. Welcome to our Summer 2012 Movie Guide! Today's guide will focus on the month of July,...

"Little Miss Sunshine" directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris haven't directed a feature since their Academy Award-winning indie hit, which opened a whopping six years ago. They're finally back this summer with their romantic comedy "Ruby Sparks." The trailer for the high-concept romantic comedy starring "Sunshine" breakout Paul Dano, Annette Bening, Antonio Banderas, Chris Messina, Steve Coogan and Zoe Kazan (who also penned the script), just made its premiere online, and by the looks of it, "Ruby Sparks" looks like a winner and bears the heart-warming quirks that made "Sunshine" such a hit. In "Ruby Sparks," Dano plays a novelist struggling with writer's block who finds love by creating a female character and willing her into existence. If only life were like the movies... Fox Searchlight opens "Ruby Sparks" on July 25. ...

The minds behind 2006 sleeper-indie-turned-mega-hit-your-dad-even-liked decided not to strike while the iron was hot, as it were, and didn't use the overwhelming good will afforded them by directorial debut Little Miss Sunshine to churn out a disappointing but quick follow-up. Good on them.
Directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris haven't done anything in the way of feature films since their road trip/quirk-fest about a dysfunctional, patchwork family travelling to California for the titular beauty pageant won over Sundance audiences and then netted Alan Arkin his first Oscar for playing the druggie, truth-spewing grandpa.
Fans of the Dayton-Faris aesthetic will finally get another project with news that He Loves Me has signed a diverse cast including Antonio Banderas, Steve Coogan, Chris Messina (Vicky Christina Barcelona, Greenberg), Deborah Ann Woll ("True Blood") and Sunshine standout Paul Dano who will star with his real-life girlfriend Zoe Kazan, who also penned the screenplay.

Labeling He Loves Me as a Little Miss Sunshine reunion is reason enough to want to see the upcoming film in theaters. But the project — which teams up Sunshine star Paul Dano with the 2006 film’s directors (Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris), producers (Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa), and studio, Fox Searchlight — is becoming more and more fascinating the more we learn about it. Below, five reasons why I can’t wait to love He Loves Me when it hits theaters. (No date, however, has been set yet.)
