★★★☆☆The fast-track to rock superstardom is an alluring proposition for the fame-hungry X Factor generation, and the trajectory of Ramona S. Diaz's entertaining Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey (2012) feels like it's been ripped from a Hollywood narrative feature. The publicised search for a replacement singer certainly isn't new. The surviving members of Inxs led a cynical reality show campaign to find a front man replacement, while the story of Tim 'Ripper' Owens, the singer in a Judas Priest tribute band who was hired to join the real thing, formed the basis for the limp 2001 Mark Wahlberg vehicle Rock Star. What sets this doc apart from those is the band's unconventional means of finding a replacement.

Legendary Journey frontman Steve Perry has a voice doppelgänger in Arnel Pineda of the Philippines. Pineda's unlikely rise to fame and fortune is deftly told in the PBS Independent Lens' film "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" coming September 30. The tale and the documentary are equally remarkable. Pineda's rise from obscurity to world wide fame played at several film festivals last year, and now will debut Sept. 30 (check your local PBS listings). Producer and film director Ramona Diaz was at the recent Television Critics' Association summer press tour and spoke about Arnel's unlikely journey. In 2007, a friend of singer Arnel Pineda began uploading YouTube videos of him covering classic Journey and other songs. Halfway around the world,...

The 2012 music-filled documentary film Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey follows the real life rock-n-roll fairy tale story of Filipino singer Arnel Pineda, who was plucked from YouTube to become the lead singer and front man for the iconic American rock band, Journey, replacing the legendary Steve Perry and leading the band on its most extensive world tour in years.
In 2006, Journey guitarist Neal Schon found Journey’s singer Arnel Pineda when he discovered a YouTube video of Pineda singing with a Filipino cover band called the Zoo. The story of Arnel Pineda's rise from nightclub singer in the Philippines to the frontman of Journey is fairly well-known -- he's been with the band, after all, for about five years now.
But it's a really good story, which is why PBS' "Independent Lens" series has picked up a documentary about Pineda's Journey experience. "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" played at several film festivals last year and is set to make its TV debut Sept. 30 (check your local PBS listings).
At the TCA summer press tour Tuesday (Aug. 6), Pineda and Journey's Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain and Ross Valory recounted how Schon found Pineda by searching YouTube, apprehensions the band had about hiring Pineda and some less-than-welcoming fan responses.
Cain recalls a tour date in one city -- he doesn't say which one -- where "people sat with their arms folded" for about the first half-hour of the show...

You've got to love the MPAA, take a 90-minute film with only about six moments where any words are actually said on screen and give the film a PG-13 rating. Whyc For brief strong language of course. The film is J.C. Chandor's All is Lost, which I saw and loved at this year's Cannes Film Festival (read my "A+" review here) and the moment the rating refers to comes about midway through the film and it is one single, solitary word. Based on the rating I'm pretty sure you can guess what that word is. Of course, I guess you could argue a PG-13 doesn't really matter in this case, but that's hardly the point. The point is this arbitrary ratings system where the PG-13 for All is Lost is really not different than the PG-13 for films like The Dark Knight or, in the case of this bulletin,...

When Arnel Pineda showed up at the American Embassy in the Philippines in 2007, he told an immigration officer he was traveling to the United States for an audition with the rock band Journey. The officer didn't believe him. Suspicious of such an unusual reason for travel and shocked by Pineda's brazenness, he asked the middle-aged frontman to sing. Pineda broke into "Wheel in the Sky," Journey's 1978 hit that resurfaced during season two of "The Sopranos." ("Don't Stop Believin" would serve as the coda for the show's finale, one of...

In 2007, Filipino YouTube star Arnel Pineda was vaulted from viral-video notoriety to international fame as the new lead singer of Journey. This was mere months after the finale of The Sopranos, when the wave of Journey comeback nostalgia was arguably at its peak. In Pineda's words, "I'm short ... I'm So Asian ... " How was this guy going to fit into the mold of the classic American rock star? That's the story you'll find in the documentary film Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey. Director Ramona S. Diaz brought her film to the Tribeca Film Festival in 2012, where Pineda wowed the crowds both onstage and off. (Wonder what Documentary Character Type he'd fit into?) Now, the film opens in selected cities across America this Friday, March 8. See if it's playing near you. Live in NYC? Ramona S. Diaz and Executive Producer Josh Green will be ...

I enjoy listening to Journey, and they're songs always kickass during Karaoke! I don't really know a lot about the story behind the band, and until now I had no idea that they hired an amateur Filipino singer named Arnel Pineda to join the band as their lead singer! This trailer for the documentary Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey kind of floored me, because it's really kind of an unbelievable story. It shows us the inspiring true story of how they found this guy, and how he's rocking out with the legendary band.

The documentary debuted to strong reviews at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival and with a theatrical release on the horizon, HuffPost Entertainment is happy to premiere the new "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" trailer. Watch above and prepare to get goosebumps.

For the past week, Silver Spring MD played host to some of the heavy hitters of the non-fiction world as the AFI-Discovery Channel Silverdocs Documentary Festival and conference celebrated its tenth anniversary. Wrapping up this weekend, Silverdocs presented more than a hundred films, as well as a week packed with panels, workshops, and special events like its annual Guggenheim Symposium, which this year honored the work of doc stalwarts Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky of the "Paradise Lost" trilogy fame. The festival opened Monday evening with the crowdpleasing "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey," in which director Ramona Diaz follows the unlikely but true story of fellow Filipino Arnel Pineda on his first year on tour as the new frontman for the legendary rock band Journey after years as a cover band singer. The screening was followed, appropriately enough, with a party featuring a band called "The Reagan Years," whose playlist.

Hollywood may have some movies. But the longest running international film festival in the Americas is in San Francisco.
Last Thursday, the Sf Film Society kicked off its 55th annual San Francisco International Film Festival at the Castro Theatre with a screening of "Farewell, My Queen," Benoît Jacquot’s portrayal of court life at Versailles during the final days of the French Revolution, followed by an equally lavish party at Terra Gallery. Since then, nearly 200 films have flickered across Sf screens.
(Scroll Down For Photos/Video)
And the films have not disappointed. Within the monstrous lineup are documentaries, soon-to-be art house classics and heavily-publicized heavyweights like "Hysteria" –- Tanya Wexler's ode to the vibrator, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal -- and "The Last Gladiators", about infamous hockey fighter, Chris "Knuckles" Nilan and his well-documented drug addiction and inner turmoil.

In 1983, to promote their hit single "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)," Journey shot their first scripted music video that wasn't just remastered concert footage (or in-studio footage). If the goal was to make a great music video, that did not happen. If the goal was to make one of the cheesiest music videos ever put to film -- a video so infamous that, almost 30 years later, we're still talking about it -- then, yes mission accomplished.

It's Year 11 for the Tribeca Film Festival, and it looks like the fest created by Robert De Niro is hitting its stride.
The 11-day event, which takes place April 18-29, has always been known for its flashy red- carpet premieres (this year's fest is bookended with the comedy "The Five-Year Engagement" and Marvel's latest “The Avengers”) and fun family fare (free Drive In screenings of "Jaws" and "The Goonies"). Tribeca is also branching out into the online world: For its second year, the festival will screen a handful of titles from this year's Tribeca Online Film Festival as well as stream some of its panels.
But if you like to watch your movies the old-fashioned way (in the theater), here are 15 titles from this year's fest that we think you should check out.
