Official Selection - The 2010 Burbank International Film Festival.
The original screenplay, which was written by Steve Maisch, was wrapped up at the end but as director James McDonald neared the end of filming, he and producer Aaron Sparks decided to leave the ending open with the words 'To be Continued' as the final shot. The sequel, The Reckoning (2014) is scheduled for release in 2011.
A Conversation with Mr. D (2009) was the first short film that director James McDonald had made in some time. His previous three movies had all been feature films, including Divine Souls (2007), The Photograph (2003) and Nemesis (2000). Divine Souls (2007) had taken McDonald four years to make, from writing the script, production and post-production and he wasn't ready to jump back in to making another feature so he decided to do a short instead. Shooting and editing took place over a three month period.
Mr. D's two leading actors, Samantha Thomson and Rocky Muether had starred together in director James McDonald's previous feature film, Remember the Best Times. However, halfway through filming the film's Director of Photography walked off the film for another project, which eventually also fell apart and Remember the Best Times came to a crashing halt. The two actors played husband and wife in that movie. McDonald thought they had such great screen chemistry together that he cast them them straight away in Mr. D.
The film supposedly takes place in California and New York but was shot entirely in Dallas, Tx. After the film wrapped, star Samantha Thomson moved to New York to pursue her acting career, thus, leaving the character of Chris Richardson to be re-cast for the film's sequel, The Reckoning (2014).
