Absolutely awful and absolutely amateur sci-fi.

Warning: Spoilers
The reviews on IMDb for this movie have really got my head spinning. Having seen it in my hometown of Sydney, I checked in to see what other people thought. I can't believe what i'm reading.

Eraser Children is sure zany, but in a throw it all up against the wall and see what sticks sort of way. The story is your usual sci-fi stab at how bad the world now is because all the power is in the hands of one man. And just as predictably you have a underground movement that runs around a lot. Predictable can still work but boring, especially so, so, so boring just doesn't.

But the real problem with eraser children is that its so busy trying to be about big things that it spends half its time standing still looking up at what its created. But there's nothing to look at except absolutely awful acting by an unknown cast and even worse amateur direction by an unknown director.

Who cares?

Warning: Spoilers
Some films are really worth the trouble, and you put up with snails pace action and cheap production values. Other films are just snails pace with cheap production values. Like this film called Eraser Children. This film is hilarious, but it's not a comedy. It's funny because it thinks it's being so smart. It tries to be dark and deep by draining everything of color and character and plot and action and everything else that makes a story worth telling. The other question is when oh when did Australia lose its sense of humor? I just don't get it. You can be funny and deep at the same time you know? There is a bit of comedy here and there, but it was like a stand-up comic dying on stage and an audience checking their watches. Polite chuckles and that's about it. But anyway, when mainstream lets you down you turn to under the radar stuff like the underground festival I saw this movie at in Melbourne. I saw three films there this year. One deserved a wider audience, one was just an exercise in parochialism and Eraser Children is an exercise in audiences don't matter. But that's only one of the many boxes it ticks in the how to make a movie in Australia handbook. So yes it's a typical Aussie film. Which is another way of saying make a film in Australia by Australians but not for Australians or anyone else for that matter. That's because no one else really cares.

Strange and slow sort of sums it up.
spirax201018 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Remember when "straight to DVD" kind of said it all? Well during ERASER CHILDREN I reckon I thought up a new one. It's called "straight to YOUTUBE". I'll tell you why too.

Hopping on to YOUTUBE is normally all about grabbing bite size pieces or even highlights. Now there aren't too many highlights in ERASER CHILDREN, but there is the occasional sequence that's got cult written all over it. And yes I know cult is a dangerous and easily;y misappropriated word. It normally either means misunderstood and misestimated (is that a word?), or else it means plain it's so bad it's good. That's ERASER CHILDREN. There are scene in this thing where you'll move closer to the monitor and stop chewing on your pop tart for sure.

The story is all about the world ruled by some ideologue nut case who's a mix of every despot nut case you've ever heard of. And yes there's an underground movement, and yes there's technology gone nuts, and yes the world is in ruins (depending on the budget of the scene though).

The real problem with ERASER CHILDREN though is that it takes an ancient chestnut of a story and realizes within ten seconds into the film that it has nothing new to say. So it tries really, really hard to throw up whatever's in the area just to see what sticks. That's how you end up with transvestites as a comic relief. And no i'm not kidding.

I'm a big fan of cult sci-fi, so low budgets are no big deal, but give me a story and give me characters. Real characters. The fakeness in this film has nothing to do with the budget. It's the authenticity of vision. If you want to see future world gone mad, go see 1984 with John Hurt. It's not always pretty, but you'll actually feel something.

Name dropping as film-making
kazjones713 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
One look at the title and my partner and I ran (not walked) to check this one out because of the David Lynch connection we thought was there. Well it's okay that this wasn't Eraserhead revisited I guess. We sort of knew that of course. But it does go to show and prove is that it's not only big dumb Hollywood summer movies that sometimes make films by the numbers.

Eraser children is how to make a safe independent film if you get what I mean. By hey the title gives the game away and so does the stories about a world in the future ruled by a megalomaniac and where everything is subordinate to the greater industrial good and the world is full of soulless drones. So it's 1984 meets THX 118 meets Metropolis. Whats missing is the one thing George Lucas got right, and the film version of 1984 with John Hurt were smart enough to realize too, that you need to give the audience a character we care about.

This is a low budget film obviously, and that's okay. Brazil is the other left field film I'm guessing Eraser children is influenced by. I can talk about that one heaps cos I want to buried with my signed copy! Terry Gilliam is a god! But sure I can understand why some people don't get his films, but no one will argue that what you're getting is a film full of wild images and the images they etch into the mind and just stay there. When you try and do what he does with a low budget like Eraser children the scenes ended up looking like a motley collection of student short films with story potholes along the way, and acting that ranges from can't-act to looking bored. But I can see what Eraser Children is trying to do, and I honestly don't mind that it's not that original, but I have to be honest and just say all I really got was something sort of being poured out of a blender using cheap imitation flavors.

One of the most inept films I've ever had the (dis)pleasure of seeing
de_Boeldieu12 June 2010
Kudos to the apparently young filmmaker for pulling together the funds for this and having some sort of 'talent' (in inverted commas for a reason) in directing this, although this sorry excuse for a film shouldn't be screened outside of his group of friends. I was bored, horrified (that it got funded), bored and sleepy watching this mess of a movie...and bored. Did I mention that? The satire that the director is aiming for is completely missing from the film and I'm not sure he understood that to begin with.

On a side note: having friends and acquaintances sign up to IMDb especially to write positive reviews and give good scores? Not a good idea. Awful, awful film.

Liked it a lot
kerryparts593 October 2009
I don't think this film is for everyone. But I have to say I really enjoyed it. I saw it in Melbourne at a preview screening. I didn't know what to expect. It was made on a pretty low budget but looks really tops.

The story follows a worker who is stuck in a totalitarian society and taken underground by a old kinda hopeless man who thinks he can change the world by killing the leader.

I saw it on a pretty small projection screen so I would like to see it again in a cinema. All in it was a lot of fun. I recommend it to people who like movies a bit different.

Good! Watch it twice!
bonnieklyde129 February 2010
I liked this film. Especially on the second viewing. There are many things I missed the first time around. I liked it both times and thought it was funny.

I love some of the characters created in it and the girl in the checkered adds.

I would like to get the DVD and see if there are many behind the scenes as I read about the way it was made and it was interested.

All in all a good film and I would probably even watch it a 3rd time! I am looking forward to some more cool low budget films like this in the future.

10/10 for creativity!

Not bad
gregTelankos12313 September 2010
This film was a low budget film. I don't think it is a sci-fi film. More a sort of bizarre cult type film. Set in a world where technology has gotten worse rather than better.

I like most of it, I mean I wouldn't watch it again but I came out of it thinking about what if that happened to us.

It looked great for the most part and I really like the score. Wonder if I can get that anywhere?

I really like Max Blizard, he was a funny character. Most of the characters were pretty good. The main character was okay as well but it sort of shifted from him and the Alfred character.

It is a good low budget film but I would like to have seen what it would have been like if it did have a budget.

Great surprise!
Suzzymelton5 October 2009
I love going to film festivals and seeing something I never would get the chance to see. I watched Eraser Children in Colorado. I really liked it.

Visually it looks stunning and the storyline is something new to me which is nice. In the film technology seems to be worse than it is now and fuel has run out (which I think will happen to us soon). This film comments on these current issues but in a more of the vein of a satire.

The actors are great with highlights being the transvestite maid in all the commercials and the actor that plays one of the leads, Alfred. You can see these filmmakers have a clear style. Would be interesting to see what they do next.

Cool!

Warning: Spoilers
Lots of funny moments in this for me and my friend. Loved the off the wall characters and the ambitious screenplay. I guess people say it is kinda link 1984 or Brazil?? but I don't see it. Just because the world is ruined and backwards, that is about all that's similar. This film is its own style. It would be interesting to see what they would do with a large budget. I know this was made for next to nothing.

I like Maximum Blizzard the most! he is a bit of a sexy chap, even though you find out at the end he isn't really a into woman at all. I'M MAXIMUM BLIZZARD! I'd like to see it again on DVD. It always annoys me that film festivals screen lots of interesting and off the wall films (this is a good thing) but it is always hard to find those films once they stop playing at festivals. I hope this film gets a release of some sort. It has a very cult cinema feel. Thumbs up! Thanks to all the independent film festivals that run different films so we don't always have to watch Hollywood blockbusters.

Great Film!
pickedit30 October 2009
I attended the World Premiere of this at the Fantastic Planet Festival and I loved it! For a film shot on such a low budget .. it was obviously filmed with real expertise. The director said that the script was adjusted around what they were capable of creating. Even so, it is a surprisingly layered effort. Visually the film is beautiful. It's dark in the underground - but rightly so. I really enjoyed seeing the back streets of Melbourne. The performances are great - Shane Nagle and Rob Alec in particular. The latter's idiosyncratic, edgy and loaded comic take on the concept of 'sex sells' is genius!! He blew me away. Brilliant. I will watch these filmmakers and their cast with interest. I recommend it and hope more people get a chance to see it!!

Best Film Ever!
robbybermister30 August 2009
I saw this film at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival. It won the award for Best Film that year. What a film! What an achievement! The director said it cost $15,000 to make. It is amazing what they have created for such a small cost. It shows what can be done be a talented group when they dedicate themselves to something. I hope it gets a cinema release because it deserves it! The story is great and reminded my of some of my fav films. It has the vibe of 1984 but is not the same. Well done to all involved. I am very keen to see what the director does next. I have been looking at his previous films. Looks like this is his first feature film. 10/10

Top 10 film of 2009 for me
danfeild2111 February 2010
Good morning my people! I loved this movie from start to finish! I get the similarities that people draw from movies like 1984 and Brazil but really don't see a lot of it. I thought of Clockwork Orange and yes some Gilliamisms but overall a fresh take and a very good effort for first time filmmakers doing it on their own.

I'd like to have seen it on a big screen because I think it would gain a very big cult following. I checked films like Brazil on this site and it's funny how many people love it and how many people hate it. I think this film will be much the same. It's either a love hate type film.

If you're into boring romantic comedies. Or uninspiring teen crap then this film won't suit you. If you like to watch cinema for a good in-depth story with well crafted characters then I recommend Eraser Children! I love you Maximum Blizzard! Oh and the sound track is stunning. LOVE IT!

A interesting watch!
abbycraft129 November 2009
Viewed this in Newtown when it was the opening night film of the Fantastic Planet film fest. I was surprised to see such a unique film at a Sci Fi festival. Great story and boy does it look nice! Reminded me of some more euro style films rather than the usual Australian films we are used ta seeing!

Bring back genre film-making I say. Australia needs more films like this. More genre film-making.

This film won 'Best Australian Film' at the awards of Fantastic Planet and rightly so! It is great. It is a little off the wall and I am sure there will be some sooky old Australians who won't like it because they just want boring ozzy dramas like movie versions of home and away!

This film rocks on many levels!

Talented young filmmakers!
joelben1231 October 2009
This film is great! The story is intense and some of the dark scenes leave you feeling pretty sad but that is all how you should feel because that is what the characters are feeling.

A very very talented group of young filmmakers have made this film for a low budget of $15 - $20 thousand. I saw it in Sydney at the Dendy cinemas. It really made me think after I watched it and so to me that is a sign of a great film.

Nathan Christoffel is a director to watch out for. He is only in his mid twenties so I am predicting big things from him. This is a great first effort. So ambitious! I would really like to see what he can do with a proper budget and paid actors because what he has done with no resources and actors that have no experience is just an amazing achievement. Hats off to the team! I hope the team of Nathan and Adrian Kristoffersen (the DOP of the film) stick together because when I watched them talk at the screening it was obvious that they have a great working relationship. A great film!

Hail Misner!
macsarebest921 February 2010
I watched this film at MUFF a while back and have been chasing it up since. Waiting for a release in Australia so I can get the DVD. It was a really ambitious film for a bunch of young filmmakers. I would be interested in seeing in a finished format because apparently the MUFF screening was unfinished. It won that festival and has won a few others since. So I hope it gets a release here. Though with the way the Australian film industry is I doubt it will. If you like films with a intense storyline this one will be good for you.

I love the old guy who played Misner. What else has he done? I am also looking out for the main character who takes the worker underground. He was great. Though for a film with the word Children in the title I didn't see many.
