For Westerners making movies in Asia, logistics can be problematic. And, for Asian filmmakers able to navigate local conditions, screenwriting for international audiences and access to markets can still be stumbling blocks.
Veteran producer and executive Guy Louthan is now developing a business that straddles East and West, deploys American production standards and techniques, and maximizes Asian cultural impact. It also comes at a time when global interest in Indian and Southeast Asian content is growing thanks to the aggressive local production strategies of Amazon, Netflix and HBO.
The Palanquin company that Louthan formed with British director Roland Joffe aims to bridge the gap with a slate of its own movies, close connections to local production services firms and a possible film fund once the business model has proved itself. He aims to provide full financial transparency and Asian creative involvement while delivering films that are likely to combine local and foreign locations,...

A TV series about the Wwi spy Mata Hari, directed by Roland Joffe, is one of two projects that adorn the debut slate of new production company Palanquin. Noir-thriller “Call Center” completes the initial line up.
Palanquin is jointly headed by producer Guy Louthan and Joffe. The company will focus on producing Southeast Asian projects including India-based film and television projects.
Joffe believes that that the true story of Mata Hari is more bizarre than the lurid reputation that she has since attracted as an exotic dancer and spy. To be produced by John Fitzgerald and Julian Grimmond (“The Amazing Race”), “Mata Hari” is structured as an eight-part series that charts the extraordinary life of Magritte, a Dutch girl who escaped an abusive childhood, fled to the Far East with a brilliant but manipulative adventurer who was more than twice her age, and was sucked into the world of espionage,...

After spending the 1970's in television, Roland Joffé burst onto the scene with back-to-back critical hits with The Killing Fields (1984) (winning three Oscars from seven nominations) and The Mission (1986) (winning one Oscar from seven nominations)--a sophomore slump anyone might be proud of. Both films set in exotic locals during a periods of socio-political upheaval and both are marvelous. Then things go quiet, critically speaking, with incredible speed. Last I caught up with Joffé was There Be Dragons (2011) set during the Spanish Civil War--seemingly tailor-made for triumph--but failing to provide much of an impression of that little-covered topic because of his dedication to a oft-formulated love story. His latest outing is The Lovers (2015), which IMDb incredibly claims was released theatrically, about an exotic location during a period of socio-political upheaval that is, as the title may suggest, overshadowed by a oft-formulated love story.

Hartnett and Egerton sparked romance rumors in 2012 and stepped out as a couple a year later. While they have been spotted out together several times over the years, they have largely kept their love life under wraps. "I purposefully didn't want people to know too much about my personal life because...

Remember all the hue and cry over Bipasha Basu's first international project Singularity, and that too a project directed by the renowned British director Roland Joffe. The last time when Joffe was in India-in Kolkata, to be precise-- he carved out a nugget called The City Of Joy with Om Puri, Shabana Azmi and Patrick Swayze. There is nothing joyful about Bipasha Basu's first sojourn into Western cinema. The film now entitled The Lovers has apparently been given the dreaded straight-to-dvd treatment which is reserved for those films that Hollywood studios lose faith in. What's worse, the reviews range from vaguely giggly to downright nasty. Wrote Time Out, "Forget that The Lovers doesn't have the courtesy to be fun; no cosmic romance should be so deeply afraid to shoot for the stars. As one of the film's many forgettable characters so eloquently puts it, "This stinks worse than an oyster's fart.

Simone Kessell heads to Capetown next month to play the first Queen of Egypt in Biblical epic Of Kings and Prophets. It.s yet another exotic role for the New Zealand-born actress who is now based in Los Angeles with her husband of 11 years, director Gregor Jordan. In Roland Joffe.s The Lovers, which has just opened in a limited number of Us cinemas, she plays an English governess in colonial India. She.s just seen The Lovers (formerly known as Singularity), which had a tortuous path to the screen after the production was beset with financial problems. Her verdict? .It looks magnificent but it.s very hard to follow because whole chunks were cut from the film,. she tells If on the line from La. Most of her scenes were with Josh Hartnett, who has the dual roles of a 21st Century marine archaeologist and an 18th Century British colonialist.

The movies generally refute the toxic bromide that nice guys finish last, but not The Lovers. A dopey but lavish romantic epic about magical rings that unite soul mates, Roland Joffé's latest proposes that to be a mensch is to be a martyr. Such is the fate that befalls 21st-century marine archaeologist Jay Fennel and 18th-century British colonialist James Stewart, both played with squinty stoicism by Josh Hartnett. Sure, the two men have gorgeous women hankering after them, but bad luck haunts their gentle hearts: Jay is knocked into a coma while rescuing his wife (Tamsin Egerton), while James can't help nobly siding with Britain's conquests (e.g., Scotland, India). The drama mostly follows James along his journey through a partially colonized India, wher...

Exclusive: Roland Joffe’s long gestating time travel romance will receive its market premiere in Cannes.
Palme D’Or winner Roland Joffe’s epic time travel romance The Lovers, formerly known as Singularity, starring Josh Hartnett is finally completed and will receive its market premiere in Cannes on Corsan’s slate.
This is not the film as Joffe originally planned it when the project was first launched to buyers in 2010.
Not only does the film have a new name. It has also been partly re-cast and partly re-shot. Lead actress Neve Campbell dropped out and was replaced by Tamsin Egerton (who also stars in John Boorman’s Quinzaine title Queen and Country).
“It was obviously one of these difficult productions that one comes across once in a while. We were shooting in three different continents. Our Australian partner went into liquidation,” Corsan CEO and producer Paul Breuls [pictured] commented of the production.

This spring Josh Hartnett returns to our collective consciousness in Showtime's "Penny Dreadful," and it has been a long time since we've seen him anything. The past four of five years has seen the actor drift with indies nobody saw ("Stuck Between Stations," "August," "Girl Walks Into A Bar"), genre fare that no one saw ("Bunraku," "I Come With The Rain") and troubled international blockbusters ("Singularity"). But perhaps his career might've been different, if he had made some different choices. In an interview with Details, the actor is up front about turning down some major roles, including Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns," early in his career. "Spider-Man was something we talked about. Batman was another one. But I somehow knew those roles had potential to define me, and I didn't want that. I didn't want to be labeled as Superman for the rest of my career. I was maybe 22, but I saw the danger,...

Josh and Tamsin, an English actress and model, started dating last Spring after meeting while filming 2012's Singularity. They've kept a low profile as a duo ever since but have been spotted out solo. Earlier this month, Josh stepped out without Tamsin at the SXSW festival, where he was promoting his new Showtime series, Penny Dreadful. The psychological thriller premieres in May and will be Josh's first time back on the small screen since his role on Cracker: Mind Over Murder in the late '90s. Tamsin, meanwhile, made a solo appearance at the Giorgio Armani show during Paris Fashion Week in January. View Slideshow ›...

The actor and daughter of Jane Campion talks choosing passion over cash and whether her mum makes sexy films
It's midday in Soho and Alice Englert bundles out of a cab, a dishevelled whirlwind of smiles and hellos and one quick cigarette before the Guardian drags her into a basement. It's actually one of the district's more charming basements, in the depths of an old patisserie. Anyway, Englert is used to being yanked into unwelcoming places: last winter she spent five weeks being physically attacked and psychologically tortured in the foreboding forests of Bodmin Moor. Here, there are cakes.
For his debut film, In Fear, director Jeremy Lovering needed a cast who were happy to be terrorised. In Fear follows a young couple (Englert and Iain De Caestecker) who, driving to an isolated country hotel, find themselves lost in a labyrinth of narrow roads and looming trees. While numerous heroes will make their first appearance in the second season of The CW's "Arrow," none is more anticipated than Barry Allen, aka The Flash.
It's a big role, partly because whomever is cast in the recurring role will also be the lead of a potential spin-off series. Now, Latino Review reports that the potential casting list has been reduced to three names - James Mackay, Matt Barr and Grant Gustin.
Australian actor James Mackay is best known for a role in the Aussie drama "The Straits" and the upcoming Josh Hartnett-led "Singularity".
Texan-born Matt Barr starred in shows like "Hatfields & McCoys," "Hellcats," "Harper's Island," "Commander in Chief" and has a role in the upcoming "Parkland".
Finally, there's Grant Gustin who is best known for the recurring role of Sebastian Smythe in Fox's "Glee."
The character is slated to appear in the second half of the second season.

Updated: I found out who contender # 3 is. Read below.
With three weeks to go before shooting starts for Dr. Barry Allen on the 2nd season of Arrow, the top contenders for TV’s The Flash emerge.
The Flash will get the origin treatment this season on Arrow, then possibly get his own spin-off series on The CW.
Arrow executive producer Andrew Kreisberg last week told EW,
“We’ll have to have somebody by Sept. 30, which is when we start shooting [his first] episode. So there is that timeline,” he says. “But it’s been a really exciting process just getting to meet so many fantastic actors and seeing the enthusiasm that so many people around town have for the character. It’s just amazing — I have pictures of myself at age 4 holding a Flash and a Superman doll. That I’m sitting here writing the Flash and Green Arrow now, it’s...

Both leads in Beautiful Creatures are relative newcomers, but actress Alice Englert is more of an out-of-nowhere choice for such an anticipated adaptation. She’s been garnering raves for her performances in festival favorites like Sally Potter’s Ginger & Rosa and the recent Sundance debut In Fear, but otherwise this Thursday will really mark her introduction to general moviegoers. And I’ll admit, she’s excellent in Beautiful Creatures, standing out as a dramatic centerpiece amidst the enjoyable over-the-top stints by Jeremy Irons, Emma Thompson and Emmy Rossum. Between that, the other two features I mentioned and Roland Joffe’s upcoming Singularity, the 18-year-old could very well be the next big thing, and perhaps the best of such since Jessica Chastain. So, where did she come from? Very literally she came from Jane Campion, the Oscar-nominated director of The Piano. She even had her first real starring role in one of her mother’s films, the...

You'll be seeing a lot of Alice Englert this year. The enchanting English ingénue born of filmmakers Jane Campion and Colin Englert will hit screens in four new features this year, including Sally Potter's daring coming-of-age drama Ginger & Rosa, Richard Lagravenese's adaptation of the popular Ya novel Beautiful Creatures, and Roland Joffé's mysterious romance epic Singularity. But first, Englert will hit Sundance for the premiere of Jeremy Lovering's In Fear. This psychological thriller marks Lovering's first feature film after a career of helming various British television productions. In Fear stars Englert alongside Scottish television star Iain De Caestecker, and Allen Leech, best-known to American audiences as the socialist chauffeur Tom Branson of Downton Abbey. However none of these attractive rising stars are the focus of In Fear's Sundance poster. Instead, the producers have gone for a sharp graphic approach, which you can check out below:...

Australian creditors of the trouble-plagued Singularity feature remain unpaid some three months after a final stint of filming was completed in the UK.
The company behind the $28 million Australian-uk co-production was placed into liquidation late last year. Creditors are still owed approximately $1.5-$1.6 million but remain dismayed that an assessment of claims by administrator, Worrells Solvency & Forensic Accountants, has dragged on since June.

The cameras have already begun rolling on indie psycho-thriller Grand Piano. But that isn’t stopping director Eugenio Mira from beefing up the cast with the likes of Tamsin Egerton, Kerry Bishe, Allen Leech, Alex Winter and Don McManus. Elijah Wood is in the hot seat (literally, if he’s not careful), playing a retired piano virtuoso who stopped performing when he developed crippling stage fright. A psychopath (John Cusack, who between this and The Frozen Ground, seems to be developing a taste for creeps) decides to force him back into the limelight by threatening him and his family / friends. The central conceit finds a bomb placed under a piano during a crucial performance. With a script by Damien Chazelle, the production will jaunt between Chicago, Barcelona and Gran Canaria (sounds like a fun shoot) and should arrive next year.Egerton, last seen in Chalet Girl, will next appear in Singularity.
