Rod Taylor: John Grail

Quotes

  • [heavily armed gangsters are preventing the Double Eagle detectives from testifying at a trial]

Billy Pike : Hey! We know who you are. You are for Joe Jeff Davis. There is nothing you can do to keep us from puttin' him down!

[the gangsters respond with heavy gunfire that shatters the ranch house's interior]

John Grail : Well, I guess you really showed them, William. I guess you really told them.

  • [Billy and Harland's attempt to get help results in both men's being shot]

John Grail : Isaiah, they're back!

Billy Pike : Dumb idea fellas.

    [Billy collapses]

Harland Pike : [sinking to the floor]  You're going to need a new plan.

  • John Grail : Well, I'll tell you, it was a long time ago, but me and Wolfson were in one hell of a fix - sort of like the one we got now, except we got a situation where we got much too much water and we had one where there wasn't damn near enough. Anyway, that's a long story.

Billy Pike : Keep talkin', Sheriff. We ain't goin' nowhere and that's for certain.

John Grail : That means I gotta tell 'em.

Wolf Lucas : Confession's good for the soul, John - especially your soul.

John Grail : [sighs]  I ain't from Texas.

    Billy Pike : Wha'?

    Harland Pike : What?

Isaiah 'Ice' McAdams : I think he said he's not from Texas.

Billy Pike : Well, where you from then, Sheriff?

    John Grail : Georgia.

Harland Pike : Georgia! Well, that's practically up North.

John Grail : Georgia is further south than some parts of Texas will ever be.

    Isaiah 'Ice' McAdams : Amen.

John Grail : Maybe I was born in Georgia, but I was certainly *reborn* when I moved out here.

  • [John and Wolf find that natural arsenic has poisoned the only waterhole on the wagon train's path]

    John Grail : What's that you're doin'?

Wolf Lucas : This here is called a cairn. It'll tell 'em.

John Grail : Tell 'em what? They won't know what that means.

Wolf Lucas : Can you write?

    John Grail : No.

Wolf Lucas : Well, I can't either. We gotta find some other water. Couple of seasons ago, there was a spring up there in those foothills.

John Grail : A couple of seasons ago?

Wolf Lucas : If I was out here on my own, it would be plain bad luck, but now that I got a bunch of sodbusters leanin' on me, all of a sudden I'm a snake that doesn't know his business.

John Grail : I don't want you feelin' that way. It's just this Lord-forsaken land.

Wolf Lucas : [referring to Mother Nature]  You gonna whoop her, huh? You don't win like that out here. You open up an listen to what the country's tryin' to tell ya. You better listen and listen good or you're going to go under.

John Grail : I don't listen to nothin' that's tryin' to kill me and my own.

  • [the gangsters have renewed their attack on the farmhouse]

Harland Pike : I just ain't so sure how much of this we can take.

Billy Pike : I'm not so sure how much more I'm *willing* to take!

John Grail : I'm angry! Ain't you angry? We've got ourselves a situation here.

Isaiah 'Ice' McAdams : A situation? We've got three wounded, no way to get out, surrounded by gunmen and us nearly out of ammunition. I'd call that a situation.

  • John Grail : I suppose trying to convince you two wounded fellas to stay here with Maggie is out of the question.

Harland Pike : Well, that would, ah, be like trying to talk a preacher's son into not sinnin', John.
