Another episode that questions fathers' morality
bellino-angelo201414 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
In CHIMDALE (three episodes before this) Steve Smith questioned Stan's morality when he told him ''it's the inside that counts''. Here it happens again but in a different context.

At some point the mayor of Langley Falls bans all trans fats and Stan is upset because he feels privated of his favourite foods. He begins smuggling trans fats buying them in Chimdale since is a neighboring town. The first day he succedds (and he even eats some in the CIA's bathroom), but the second day, unfortunately, he is stopped by Officer Turlington (voiced by Forest Whitaker) who patrols the city border avoiding trans fats getting into town. At home, Stan is reprimanded by Francine, who now fries all their meals. So Stan decides to use Steve as a trans fats mule, hoping that he would elude suspicion. After a few successful trips one bad trip happens because he refuses to wear the helmet (since he thought that his father made him think that he could chose which laws to follow and which not) and he gets caught. For getting rid of all the trans fats he devours them all while Turlington is distracted and arrived home he is soon taken to an hospital after a heart attack. Of course father and son make peace.

I liked mostly the first part (when Stan manages to eat some trans fats in the bathroom of the CIA office and when his son makes his successful trips from Langley Falls to Chimdale) but the second half a bit turned me off. The animation in this episode was very colorful in the trip scenes in the woods. Not among the greatest episodes but still very good.

Mike Judge did it first

Warning: Spoilers
One year before this episode aired, an episode of King of the Hill ran in which essentially the same thing happened. Episode entitled "Trans Fascism". The cities ban trans fats, fathers get upset and illegally obtain transfats, morals are compromised, and when the sons begin to think they can pick and choose which laws to follow the fathers see the error of their ways. Super funny and a great episode, juuuust saying.

Love the little moments of the show

Forest Whitaker returns as a funnyTurlington. I love the news anchor segment with Greg and Terry with the kittens, the shop clerks love for Stan, Francine lack of mental resilience cooking for her family. All gold.

The One Where Trans Fats Are Banned...
taylorkingston20 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely love this episode. It's so terrific. In this episode, the town of Langley Falls, bans all trans fats. So that means, Stan is legally separated form his favorite foods. That must be tough. He eventually begins smuggling trans fats into Langley Falls, from Chimdale, a neighboring town. And at first, it's really easy. But on his second trip, Stan is stopped by Internal Affairs Officer Turlington, who is patrolling the city border, making sure no trans fats get in. Stan is forced to discard all of his trans fats or he is at risk of being caught. If he is caught, Stan will be put in the newspaper's "Crime Beat" section, and he will be humiliated. Once he gets home, he is reprimanded by Francine, who is now deep frying all of their meals, and refuses to stop. So Stan decides to use Steve as a trans-fatty food mule, hoping his innocence will hopefully elude suspicion. But, after a few trips going successfully, one bad trip happens. Since Stan is showing his son that it's okay to break the law, Steve thinks it's okay to ride a bike without a helmet. So he doesn't, which eventually gets him caught. Overall, I give this episode a 10 out of 10.

Irresponsibly misleading approach to the topic
vercinger10 August 2018
While the basic idea of the episode - Stan goes from "all laws must be followed" to "stupid laws should be ignored" immediately upon something he likes getting banned - is good, the show really screws up in its portrayal of trans fats. Over and over again it's drilled into the viewer that trans fats make food taste good and that it will taste terrible without them. This is total nonsense, as food made with other types of fat tastes no different. Trans fats are used because they slightly reduce cost and somewhat increase shelf life, not for their taste. And given how ridiculously unhealthy they are, it's irresponsible for the show to portray them as something people would want in their food. Especially given that other types of fat (even saturated fats, despite their now-discredited bad reputation) are among the most healthy sources of calories. And you just know there are people out there who will get their opinion on trans fats from this episode, and many more who will have their opinion shifted at least a bit in the wrong direction. Cue reduction in pressure on manufacturers to phase out trans fats, leading to tens of thousands of unnecessary early deaths from heart disease.
