· Congratulations to Rachael Leigh Cook who has landed a leading role in Fox's comedy pilot Nirvana. In the potential series, the She's All That actress plays the white girlfriend of an Indian-American. The show follows two Indian-American brothers who have a disagreement with their immigrant parents as they adjust to American culture. Canadian-born Indian-American Ajay Sahgal is producing and directing the project, which is largely based on Sahgal's own experience adjusting to an American lifestyle and marrying a white woman (Lie to Me's Kelli Williams). NBC tinkered with the series, then called Nevermind Nirvana in 2004. [THR]

Sarah Chalke is transitioning from medicine to politics, taking a lead role in ABC's comedy pilot "Freshmen."
The former "Scrubs" star will play one of three new members of Congress who share a Washington house, the showbiz trade papers report. Her character will be a successful businesswoman who breezed to victory in her election -- but has a terrible track record in relationships.
Chalke has guested on a couple episodes of "Scrubs" this season but finished her regular run on the show last year. Her credits also include "Roseanne" and a guest arc on "How I Met Your Mother," where she worked with "Freshmen" creator Greg Malins.
Other casting news:
- Zooey Deschanel ("(500) Days of Summer") is set to star in an HBO pilot based on Pamela Des Barres' memoir of her groupie days, "I'm with the Band." She'll also be an executive producer of the project, Deadline Hollywood says.

Pilot season kicked into high gear this week, with all of the big four broadcast networks green-lighting projects and AMC ordering two of its own, including an adaptation of the comic book "The Walking Dead."
Oscar nominee Frank Darabont ("The Shawshank Redemption") will write and direct the "Walking Dead" pilot, based on Robert Kirkman's comic about the survivors of a zombie apocalypse. The lead character is a police officer named Rick Grimes, who leads a group of people in search of a safe home. Darabont and Kirkman will executive produce with Gale Ann Hurd ("The Terminator") and David Alpert.
AMC has also ordered "The Killing," a drama based on a Danish series called "Forbrydelsen." Set in Seattle, it centers on the murder of a young girl and tells the intertwining stories of the victim's family, the detectives working the case and local politicians.

Three more pilots hit the runway Tuesday.
Fox picked up "Nevermind Nirvana," a comedy from writer Ajay Sahgal; CBS greenlighted "The Odds," a drama from feature writer-director Jeff Wadlow and producer Joel Silver; and ABC ordered "Happy Endings," a comedy from producer Jamie Tarses.
"Nevermind Nirvana," from 20th TV, is described as "Everybody Loves Raymond" with Indian Americans.
It is an ensemble multicamera comedy about two grown-up sons, their Indian immigrant parents and their friends, including one of the son's Caucasian girlfriend.
"It's about how their lives intersect in often polarizing ways and about the clash of the old Indian values and the new American values," Sahgal said.
"Nirvana" is largely based on real-life experiences by Sahgal, who is the son of Indian immigrants and is married to "Lie to Me" co-star Kelli Williams.
He first developed "Nirvana" for NBC and NBC Studios during the 2003-04 season under Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly,...
