Good twist, fun horror film.
illkou9 March 2024
The acting and some elements are a little corny and cheap. HOWEVER, it's a fun horror film that has some twists, CREEPY parts and keeps you engaged the whole time.

Gwen picks up a one time cash job to take the night shift at an old motel, after not getting much sleep while moving cross country. It's a pretty dirty joint and ran down. She starts to see and experience a lot of creepy stuff, she starts to wonder if she's seeing things because she's sleep deprived. Things continue to get weirder, getting odd customers, phone calls, etc.

Definitely worth a watch if you're looking for something horror with a fun twist and a little dark humor thrown in.

Had potential
rolfosterberg11 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Ayoung woman gets a job in a shabby motel when ghosts starts to haunt her.

This had potent2bu no, the directors had to pull a tired old twist wich I saw coming before the movie even started to get spooky.

The girl is a serial killer wich was obvious when the news said a killer had escape.

She acted to wierd to be innocent.

Now, for once why cant we get a straìght up ghost story without silly twists. And the ending was totally idiotic. Id rather watch Psycho.

Missed opportunity...again. This is why modern movies suck.

Also lots of jumpscares. It wasnt totally rotten but nothing id never watch again..

Had potential for more...

When I sat down to watch the 2023 movie "Night Shift", from writers and directors Benjamin China and Paul China, I had never actually heard about the movie, so I didn't know what I was in for. But with it being a horror movie that had eluded me, of course I opted to sit down and watch it.

I wasn't familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list, aside from Madison Hu and Patrick Fischler, and that is something I do enjoy when I sit down to watch a movie. The acting performances were good, and it was a rather interesting character gallery for sure.

And while the trope of a remote, somewhat creepy motel (or even hotel in some movies) have been used in an abundance in the horror genre throughout the years, it is still a setting that works and sets the foundation for an interesting setting.

Writers and directors Benjamin China and Paul China did cash in on the stereotypical horror tropes, but it worked out well enough. However, it made very little room for surprises along the way, making "Night Shift" a somewhat predictable viewing experience.

"Night Shift", while watchable, just wasn't an outstanding horror movie. And thus, it will most likely never grace my screen a second time. However, I will say that it is worth checking out.

My rating of "Night Shift" lands on a five out of ten stars.

Promising with a bad ending
scrat24210 March 2024
I was prepared to waste an hour and a half on a Saturday night with this one but it turned out this was pretty good for about two thirds of the film and easily worth six stars (or more). Solid acting by Phoebe Tonkin, Lamorne Morris, Madison Hu, and well, pretty much the whole cast. Everyone played their part with gusto on conviction. There really was a perfect balance between humor, suspense and apprehension throughout the film. My reason for 3 stars is 'the big twist' in the story. The last few minutes were a complete disaster IMHO and although the directors thought they were being clever, let's face it, we are not that dumb.

One of the best horror movies I've watched recently
olcayozfirat15 March 2024
Horror movie made in 2023. First of all, let me say that I liked it. I opened the movie without great expectations. The thriller elements were very good. The atmosphere was gloomy and creepy. Clichés were used beautifully. The story also made a great twist. It's a horror movie that I watched with interest recently and liked it.

The story takes place in a hotel on the road. A girl starts her night shift duty here. He works alone and witnesses many frightening things.

Compared to a lot of ridiculous horror movies, this movie really doesn't make you regret it.

There is no sexuality or nudity in the movie.

It was pretty decent until the halfway mark
sacrilegious-7624814 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I love indie films, this one started off pretty good, got hooked on the storyline, the actors were good, this actor Lamorne Morris was really believable and I figured the production for this film was decent.

What threw me off abit was that the plot seemed to be going into a supernatural direction yet kept introducing new characters halfway that didn't seem related to what I initially thought was the main plot. This was when I knew the conclusion of this movie was going to take a left turn and have some unexpected plot twist at the end.

This movie was a mixed bag of nuts, there were some scares, comedy, thriller elements all rolled into one. It's not terrible but the writing wasn't cohesive enough.

Good, low budget, horror with a twisty ending
stevelivesey-3718312 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Surprisingly good horror flick that keeps you guessing until you get the twist about an hour in.

At times the movie makes you think it is a ghost movie, a low budget Shining and/or a, not so much a demonic Rosemary's Baby more a sort of Rosemary's Motel.

The direction is ok, the story is good, it is well made and has good production values.

Phoebe Tonkin is great as the new temporary hotel night manager and the supporting cast does a great job. The obnoxious, married couple is a real treat.

At times it seems to have an almost light hearted, humorous, quirky feel to it which eventually plays out in the ending.

Just a question. Was the ending real or in her mind?

Night Shift
Prismark1010 March 2024
Gwen (Phoebe Tonkin) is a newbie in the area. She has got a job working the night shift in an old grotty motel called the All Tucked Inn.

Thye owner Teddy (Lamorne Morris) wants someone urgently as he is on a date that night.

Gwen is creeped out of the place as Teddy was not expecting her early. He gives her a tour of the place. The place is not even deserving of a one star ranking on Tripadvisor. There is a sinkhole where the pool was. The cabins are rundown and there might be rats crawling about.

Later Gwen finds out that the hotel might also be haunted. Gwen is certainly having strange visions. Not helped that there is a news announcement of a dangerous prisoner that has escaped.

Night Shift is the directorial debut of the British twins, the China Brothers. It treads the well worn path of the psycho killer chiller.

It starts off unnervingly but becomes immensely predictable. It was never going to be The Shining or Psycho but rips off from both movies. It is well acted and for a low budget movie and it has good production values.

Predictable
phildeesnow8 March 2024
Being a predictable movie could be a good thing, if you are the "I told you so", kind of person when you are at the movies, that is...if your friends can stand you.

The thing here, is that everything has been seen in other movies, series, anthologies and that is because it's always entertaining.

Motels, Hotels, no matter how big or small, expensive or cheap have that creepy atmosphere that makes your imagination run wild, just thinking about what is going on next door, could be exhilarating.

This movie is not Psycho, or The Shining, but it's entertaining and fun to watch.

A lot of plot holes, but I liked it.

ignore the haters, a watchable little movie
ptjase12 March 2024
Reviewer is a 48 year old male. My review is aimed at ages 15 to 50, male and female, who appreciate many movies especially horror movies.

I can't understand why this is rating so low. Sure it's not as scary as Talk To Me, but it's not trying to be. Allow yourself to be entertained by it, it had me start to finish. Solid acting with quirky characters, great camera work, frights, and a neat little story. It's not a Hollywood blockbuster but it's not a B movie either. I loved it for what it was, so grab yourself some popcorn, turn out the lights, turn up the movie audio and enjoy a good night inn.

How can this be a -- i've not been able to sit through the first 20 minutes of other 5s.

Anorexic female serial killer ????
joshjc-8579910 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
You have to be kidding me to think a girl who is skinny as a tooth pick is killing people especially 2 grown as men at the same ! Give me a break ! It had its moments when her first 3 victims who were her mother and sisters were haunting her when she first got to the motel ! However, when I started to know that she was the killer it went down hill from there ! I mean fast down hill ! To believe that a woman who weighs about 98lbs soak and wet is killing people especially men who weight twice her size is just a joke all by its self ! Then she just stays at the hotel and becomes the owner out of nowhere at the end of the movie ? Unbelievable ! Don't bother watching this pathetic movie!!!!

Mostly uneventful and predictable
aronharde6 April 2024
In 2023's Night Shift we are introduced to a young woman who is tackling her first night shift in a remote motel. When she was young her mother and her sisters got killed by a serial killer and apparently the motel is haunted. Therefore she spends most of the night walking around being scared of pretty much everything.

Sadly that is most of the plot. We get some side characters that don't have much to do and there are a few lame jumpscares scattered throughout the movie. The movie is pretty slow paced and there's not much to see, making it a rather boring watching experience. There are some humorous scenes that I didn't mind and also the acting was decent.

In the end I thought that the movie was pretty predictable and did not have any tricks up its sleeve. Also without spoiling anything I think the ending didn't make much sense but you can see that for yourself if you want. I think it's a below average movie that is slow paced and mostly uneventful, even though it has a semi-interesting premise. [4,9/10]

[5.5] Gwen, Gwen, Gwen
cjonesas25 April 2024
Beware, only fans of Phoebe Tonkin will come to this movie. Mostly. Not a bad movie per se, but a slightly above-average one where the pillar is of course Gwen and second to her, Alice. I would have liked her to merge up with Gwen, making a bright tandem in managing and running the new colorful and rosy establishment.

If anything is problematic or seemingly weak, that goes back to the C. Brothers, cause as far as the actors and Yogi are concerned, they delivered.

Could have been good
chaitanyamaheshwari24 March 2024
The film had potential, but there were several factors that didn't make it work. First of all, it shows that it's a directorial debut, as the direction left much to be wanted. Continuity errors is one of such culprits. Second, the lead actor can't act in progressions, and although rest of the movie she did do passively good, at the end, her acting seemed as if she was trying too hard. Next, odd background music choices seemed amateur. The film was only good in parts, and couldn't help itself from doing repetitive tropes. Let's talk about the twist; homage to the other movie (SI) was a bit half baked, but even that would have been good, but sudden tonal shift was way too sudden.

Now the film has its moments, I'll give it that. Tension building both with visuals and sound are generally done well. I really liked the supporting cast; good work there.

All in all, it could have done better with more runtime and more meticulousness.

It's imperfect, but I ended up enjoying it
burgerman937 April 2024
This filled its purpose as a slasher horror film and Phoebe Tonkin is quite electrifying on screen- I'm ready to watch more of her works. This film really blows a lot of the Blumhouse Production movies out of the water.

Certainly the film is a slow burn, off beat, and was filmed on a low budget, but the payoff is huge once the twist is revealed. The end scene also tied everything together.

I was prepared to nit-pick character decisions or some of the dark comedy scenes (for instance the oddball married couple who wanted a room for recreational activities), but I sat back and accepted the movie for what it was. It was an adventurous independent movie that could be enjoyed by casual and diehard horror fans alike.

Smart, Scary and fun
tinaaslaton18 April 2024
Loved this little indie horror. The creepy story had me guessing at every turn. Never saw the ending coming. It was executed superbly. Lamorne was hilarious. Adored all those moments of levity throughout. Phoebe was so well cast. She conveyed a great layer of someone on the run, while dealing with the unpredictable events of working at a small run down spooky motel. Madison was great too. She's having a great run with the Boogeyman and The Brothers Sun recently. Also loved all the little nods to horror films throughout. The filmmakers knew what they were doing. Excited to see what they do next!

No strings attached - fun
andrewtaynuilt23 March 2024
It was at times difficult to tell the target audience for this unorthodox (what I assumed to be) teen-horror. Moments reminded me of the mild shock of offbeat Ozzie kids show - Round the Twist, occasionally blended with the more modern peril of a Fargoesque thriller.

The well arranged cast (including Lamorne Morris - Fargo, Patrick Fischler - Twin Peaks:The Return, Lauren Bowles - True Blood) do a decent job throughout, but at times the dialogue is delivered in a slightly camp style, adding a whiff of black comedy to a narrative that doesn't appear to be desiring it (I can't find a listing that describes it as a comedy horror).

There are enough classic horror nods throughout to keep the purest horror aficionados comfortable, yet it moves at a pace fast enough to cater for the more modern, often less forgiving "bite size" horror audience.

The soundtrack was at times a little lightweight in creating a more threatening vibe but for the budget it likely had, do an adequate job.

Each time I see a China Brothers production/script they move on in leaps and bounds and this is again another leap forward in what will likely be a lengthy film career.

Better Than Average
stevendbeard11 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I saw Night Shift, starring Phoebe Tonkin-Babylon, The Originals_tv; Lamorne Morris-Bloodshot, New Girl_tv; Madison Hu-The Boogeyman, Voyagers and Patrick Fischler-Barry_tv, Lost_tv.

This is a better than average horror film directed by the China Brothers-this is the first movie they have directed together. This movie is not to be confused with the 1982 Night Shift, which was a comedy with Henry Winkler & Michael Keaton. It's totally unrelated. Phoebe is starting her first night as a night manager at the All Tucked Inn, a motel run by Lamorne. The motel is in a remote area, run down, rat infested and it is presumed to be haunted. There is even a sink hole in the swimming pool. The motel guests include Madison, who is running away from home, and Patrick and his wife that just want to do some kinky stuff for about an hour, before going home after leaving a boring party. Phoebe starts seeing apparitions and hearing strange noises, which doesn't help matters when Phoebe learns that a serial killer just escaped police custody and is in the area. The film does have a good twist near the end.

It's not rated but it does contain bloody violence, language, sexual content-no nudity-and has a running time of 1 hour & 22 minutes.

I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to seeing more films by the China Brothers. I would buy it on DVD.

Pleasantly surprised
carabseo18 March 2024
I really enjoyed Night Shift! It was giving David Lynch/Twin Peaks, Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, and Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho vibes with the pacing, absurdity (in a good way), and the weird motel off the side of the road/small town setting. The costumes were vibrant and fun for the dark setting, I love the teal arran sweater Phoebe Tonkin's character wears! And I really enjoyed Patrick Fischler and Lauren Bowles' eerie performances. Their costumes were great too! Everything wraps up nicely, did not feel like a waste of time or information. Would definitely recommend it to others and I can't wait to see what the China Brothers make next!

Great indie horror
petehayleybarker11 March 2024
I have ready a few negative reviews about this great little indie horror film from the China Brothers.

Yes some might say it may have a familiar creepy hotel vibe, but it is executed superbly and the cast do a great job at keeping your eyes fixed to the screen.

It's hard not to give away any spoilers, but Night Shift is packed with twists, turns, frights, suspense and an absolute abundance of fun! An excellent mix of both humour and horror, this is a film I look forward to watching again.

It's early days for the China Brothers, who wrote and directed this, and I for one am excited for what they come up with next!

Fresh horror movie
soundsofdenihilism19 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This movie isnt for everyone, but it checks a lot of boxes. I'm glad I went into this with no expectations.

There are some role reversals and clever commentary on the genre as a whole. The acting is bad, then good, then great. The film isn't scary but it IS creepy. Despite the cliches I still got adrenaline pumping in some of the scenes.

The director knew how to hold a shot. It's funny in a tongue in cheek way, but never so offensive that it takes you out of the movie.

The lighting is good and the set is simple but effective. Costumes were a bit on the weak end but they get the job done. As far as I can tell little to no CGI was used which is refreshing.

Plot sometimes dragged but eventually reached a crescendo where. I never got bored.

If you are on the fence, just watch it.

The Indie Thriller is BACK
belvapark10 March 2024
MAXIMUM ENJOYMENT from a thriller - Night Shift is everything it needs to be at every twist and turn. Effortlessly a stand out in the genre with killer performances; Night Shift is an instant classic that ticks all the boxes. The China Brothers have delivered a story that weaves in the fun and scares at all the right moments and is nothing short of entertaining. Grab your popcorn, chuck on hour comfies, and tuck in for a ride that (if you're anything like me) you haven't had with a triller in a long time. Love that indie horror films are finally getting the attention they deserve! Can't wait to see what these guys do in the future.

An Instant Classic!!
It's hard to talk about the film without spoilers, but it's an impressive debut for the China Brothers!

While working her first night shift at a remote motel, a young woman suspects she's being followed by a dangerous character from her past. As the night progresses, things get even worse when she starts to think the place may be haunted.

Their encyclopedic knowledge of horror and thriller really shines as they both honor films of the past, while creating memorable and effective scares. If you're looking for a Friday thriller, look no further - this one is for you!!

I'm excited to see what's next for the brothers and am a huge fan!
