Pink and blue hues overwhelmed the stretch of Sunset Boulevard outside Netflix on Thursday as the “Trans Takeover” picket drew at least 200 writers and allies to address concerns about trans employment and how the community is portrayed in pop culture.
“Trans people are workers too. We’re in solidarity with the labor movement around the world and we are showing up in ways that we are often not depicted,” said writer Jacob Tobia, whose credits include the Showtime pilot “Sissy.” “Strikes are moments where you redefine who is at the table, and we want to be sure that we’re sending a really strong message to the world that we’re at the table now and we want to stay at the table.”

Nexstar laid off between 30-40 staffers at the CW network Tuesday, marking the first sweeping staffing overhaul at the “Walker” broadcaster since it changed ownership, according to a source familiar with the situation.
Among those cuts were Paul Hewitt, the longtime CW comms chief, who has been replaced by Beth Feldman. Additionally, multiple execs in distribution, strategy and affiliate relations were let go, with Google vet Rebekah Dopp taking over those departments.
Nexstar is wasting little time revamping The CW, a plan that began with the replacement of longtime CW president Mark Pedowitz being ousted upon the close of Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery’s sale of the network to Nexstar Oct. 3. Also cut in the wake of the deal were streaming and branding exec Rick Haskins and ad sales head Mitch Nedick.

After more than 100 years, "Tom Swift", selling more than 30 million books worldwide, has had its first live-action TV series season canceled after going 'woke' at The CW, changing the original white, blonde and straight 'Tom Swift' into black and gay:
"...the 'Tom Swift' TV series focuses on the adventures of a 'woke' billionaire/inventor thrust into a world of sci-fi conspiracy and unexplained phenomena after the shocking disappearance of his father.
"Tom takes to the road on a quest to unravel the truth, leaving behind the comforts of his usual moneyed lifestyle, all while fighting to stay one step ahead of a 'deep state' group hell-bent on stopping him.
"Tom’s missions will require his genius and flair for innovation guided by love, romance, friendship and the mysteries of the universe..."

Nexstar Media Group, Inc. said Monday that it will acquire 75 ownership interest of The CW from Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global. The previous co-owners, who’ve been partners on The CW since 2006, will retain 12.5 ownership each and continue producing original scripted programming for the broadcaster.
The CW’s current chairman and chief executive officer Mark Pedowitz will continue to stay in the role with responsibility for day-to-day operations. Nexstar is the largest local television and media company with 200 broadcast stations in 116 markets.
Under Chairman and CEO Perry Sook, Nextstar is expected to close the transaction in the third quarter. Currently the largest CW affiliate group and the U.S. market’s largest local television broadcasting company, Nextstar didn’t disclose the terms of the deal; the Wall Street Journal reported in June, however, that the company was not expected to pay cash but would instead assume up to 100 million...

NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” beat the primetime competition on Tuesday, managing the titles of most-viewed and highest-rated program. The episode saw 13 more acts perform for the final round of auditions, drawing an audience of 6.2 million people and a 0.67 rating in the key 18-49 demographic. The rest of the broadcast networks presented pretty lackluster fare, nearly all of which were reruns. After “AGT,” NBC lost most of its audience when “Family Game Fight” began at 10 p.m. That series only mustered a 0.32 demo rating and 2 million total viewers. The only other new offering was The CW’s “Tom Swift,” which dipped to a 0.03 demo rating and 243,000 viewers compared to last week’s 0.05 demo rating and 282,000 viewers. As always, CBS’ “FBI” franchise did well even in re-airings, averaging a steady 0.32 in the demo and 3.4 million eyeballs across primetime. It’s a swift exit for the Nancy Drew spinoff Tom Swift as The CW has canceled the series after just six episodes. As reported by Deadline, the network has decided to drop the series despite liking the show, creatively speaking. The cancelation is said to be based on performance; Tom Swift is one of The CW’s lowest viewed series on linear, with 535K viewers in Live+7, as well as on streaming. The options on the cast were set to expire on Thursday, June 30. However, according to Deadline, CBS Studios, which is behind the mystery drama, is trying to extend those options so that they can shop the series to other broadcasters and platforms. Tom Swift premiered on May 31, 2022, and stars Tian Richards as the young billionaire inventor Tom, who is launched into a world of sci-fi conspiracy and unexplained phenomena after his father’s disappearance. “Tom Swift” has been canceled by The CW after one season, Variety has confirmed.
The news comes less than a month after the series, a spinoff of “Nancy Drew,” premiered on May 31. Sources close to the project tell Variety the decision came down to ratings, as the show failed to find an audience via linear TV or streaming. The five episodes of the series that have aired so far drew 0.1 ratings in the 18-49 demographic.
The news also comes a little over a month after The CW canceled a sizable amount of their originals, including “Charmed,” “Dynasty,” “Rosewell, New Mexico,” “4400,” “Legacies,” “Naomi” and “Batwoman.” In January, it was announced that Nexstar Media Group is in negotiations with the channel to acquire a sizable stake in it, after years of being predominantly owned by WarnerMedia.

The CW’s “Nancy Drew” spin-off “Tom Swift” has been canceled at the network after one season. The CBS Studios show, which premiered May 31, will finish its Season 1 run but will not be returning to the broadcast network, TheWrap has confirmed.
While the cancellation comes amid poor viewership numbers and is one of the network’s lowest-rated series on linear and digital, “Tom Swift” is the latest in a long line of shows to be axed by the network, which canceled such programs like the popular “Legacies,” “Batwoman” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.”
The wave of cancellations comes amid the CW’s looming sale as parent companies Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery plan to divest from the joint venture and focus on bringing their best series in-house to their respective streaming services nationally and internationally. CEO Mark Pedowitz said in a conference call with reporters in May that “none of these were easy decisions.

The CW’s wave of series cancellations is continuing into the summer.
The network has pulled the plug on its Nancy Drew spinoff Tom Swift after a single season. The CBS Studios series, which premiered on May 31, will play out the remainder of its order but won’t return to the broadcast network.
Tom Swift is the 11th series The CW has canceled in the 2021-22 season, the most it has cut in a decade. The surge in cancellations comes as the network’s owners, Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global, are looking to sell the Mark Pedowitz-led broadcaster; local TV giant Nexstar, which owns a number of CW affiliates, is the leading candidate and, per a Wall Street Journal report this week, will take a 75 percent stake in the network, with Wbd and Paramount retaining 12.5 percent each.

You don’t have to have watched The CW’s “Nancy Drew” to watch “Tom Swift,” the network’s new series that is, in the most technical terms, a spinoff. Though Tom (played by Tian Richards) first appeared on the second season of “Nancy Drew,” the show bearing his name has little to do with it, which is for the best. There’s no real need to complicate things even further for Tom, who goes through so much in the pilot episode that there’s barely room for nuance beyond the basics.
The series’ rush to establish every moving piece begins immediately, with a voiceover that wastes no time illustrating the Swifts’ place in this world. “We’re not nerds; we’re Black nerds,” says Tom. “Oh, and billionaires.” Also, they’re “not the Obamas,” and “not ballers,” but inventors who are about to go to Saturn. The CW closed out this week’s parade of upfront presentations on Thursday morning with an event that put the emphasis on the strength of the network’s brand as a filter of young adult-focused dramas.
“Our digital strength speaks for itself,” CW chairman Mark Pedowitz declared from the stage at New York City Center. In a sign of the times, CW’s presentation included a tour of its new enhanced app.
Pedowitz also made an oblique reference to the deal that is deep in negotiations for station group giant Nexstar to acquire a majority stake in the network that has been jointly owned by Warner Bros. and CBS Corp. (now Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global) since 2006. Nexstar and its predecessors have been the core affiliate station group for CW and its predecessor, the WB Network, since the WB’s debut in 1995.

The long-gestating Zorro TV series reboot with a female protagonist has moved a step closer to reality with an order for six additional scripts from the CW, bringing the script total to 7. As Deadline reported exclusively last month, the CW’s gender-swapped reimagining of the classic masked vigilante character hails from from filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, writer-director Rebecca Rodriguez, Sean Tretta (Mayans M.C.), Ben Silverman and Howard T. Owens’ Propagate and CBS Studios.
The pickup of backup scripts for Zorro joins three traditional pilot orders the CW made today, to Berlanti Prods.’ latest DC project, Gotham Knights, the Supernatural prequel The Winchesters as well as the Walker prequel Walker: Independence. This represents the bulk of the CW’s orders this pilot season, I hear there is a chance for one additional one that could be straight-to-series.
