The Silent Blabbermouth
wes-connors26 December 2016
A telephone call brings fantastic news to the Buell household. One of the networks wants to create a new television soap opera series from a script by Roger (Roger C. Carmel). Kaye (Kaye Ballard) is sure they will become millionaires and wants to tell everyone, especially Eve (Eve Arden). A nervously exited Roger warns Kaye that, in show business, bad luck can jinx a deal before the final contract is signed. Forbidden to share the good news with a soul, Kaye uses the game Charades in an attempt to tell Eve. Very quickly, Eve is playing Charades with Herb (Herbert Rudley). The title "I Haven't Got a Secret" is a swipe of the game show "I've Got a Secret"...

Producer-director Desi Arnaz delivers a near-perfect half-hour of comedy with this one, written by Peggy Dick. It's difficult to believe NBC was considering canceling "The Mother-In-Law" by the time this aired. While more than acceptable by most standards, the ratings disappointed the network. Perhaps they expected Lucille Ball-levels. It's also evident that, while very skillfully presented, this series was mostly a recycling of ideas from previous Lucy-Desi shows. Audiences may have felt they'd seen many of these situations before and preferred Lucy, Vivien Vance and their TV characters. Still, this episode of "The Mothers-In-Law" is very funny.

******** I Haven't Got a Secret (3/17/68) Desi Arnaz ~ Kaye Ballard, Eve Arden, Roger C. Carmel, Herbert Rudley

"You'll jinx it if you blab...."

Warning: Spoilers
The Hubbard and Buell families learn a valuable lesson about making presumptuous about a deal before it is subtle, and Eve's assumption that Rodger has landed a contract as Creator and head writer of a soap opera falls through window lab to a scoop lab to Herb who blabs to the kids. "You don't count on anything until it is signed on the dotted line", Roger incest, but even if he jumped the gun a little bit as is revealed in the last minute. Eve and Kay spend most of the episode fantasizing about Kay and Rogers New Life, and eventually, it is revealed that Eve is jealous of Kay, feeling that it should be her who became rich, not the earthy but unsophisticated Buell's. The theme, "You'll jinx it...", is sung over and over in a humorous way, and of course, a group chorus is made out of it, making it the highlight of this episode.

Even though this episode focuses on one of Roger's dreams, he isn't in it's really all that much, with Kay and Eve sneaking back into the leads after allowing the husband's to dominate in the previous episode. An amusing moment has Eve jealous of Kay's new mink coat, and rather taken aback by Kay's gift to her of a fur hat that even a pimp wouldn't wear. Lots of physical and verbal comedy makes this one of the better episodes, and of course, it also deals with an important life lesson about assumptions and jumping the gun before everything falls together.
