Yes, the pandemic caused the abrupt end of season 4, and the whole Codex plot. And I never mind seeing more Tobin Bell. Yes, he got short-shafted last year, and the production staff didn't have the pandemic excuse for why they dropped Peter Weller and his Mason character from the end of season 3. Whatever happened to Mason, anyway?
But as "the return of Codex", this episode didn't make sense. So Leland is trying to get Eric out of prison, to complete a mission that he doesn't even know he needs Eric for? And after Eric told Leland "No" back in the 80s? How does that make sense?
We do get Joe Pantoliano as Eric Andrews. And... he's pretty good. I like him as the annoying pacifist, and as the MacGyver-like "General Ma" superkiller we see at the end. Andrew does escape at the end, so I suppose the production staff can get him back. Even if their reputation for bring back previous foes isn't too good: hello, Mason!
And why did Gwen have the scepter when she blew herself up at the end of season 4? If it has the historical record of Codex, including its financials, giving it to one person seems dumb.
Why do we only see Eaton and Tobin by video feed? Eaton was "live" last week, so why keep her offset this week. Okay, Bell is 78, I can see why he might be in danger from COVID. But did Eaton suddenly get qualms about exposure and work off-set?
We get a disproportionate amount of time dedicated to Mac and Desi repairing their relationship. I was never as enamored with the Mac/Desi ship, or last season's abrupt Mac/Riley ship. And the whole romantic triangle is kind of tropish. It's a necessity of most modern-day drama TV, but it's still a bit of a slog. The original 'MacGyver' survived without it, but I suppose we shouldn't expect that in 2020. I find Till and Tran to have little romantic chemistry, so the whole thing is a waste to me.
Basically this episode "ends" Codex. But I figured they were over last season. Yes, Leland and Roman escaped. But this was a weak-sauce way to bring them back.
But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. What do you think?
