Madrid — Carlos Reygadas’ “Our Time,” Alvaro Brechner’s “A Twelve-Year Night” and Ana Katz’s “Sueño Florianópolis” feature in San Sebastian’s Latin America-focused Horizontes Latinos, the biggest section at the Spanish festival after its main competition and New Directors’ strand.
Opening with Marcelo Martinessi’s “The Heiresses,” winner of the Sebastiane Latino Prize, Horizontes Latinos, as is its wont, mixes fest players, drawn from Sundance, Berlin, Cannes and Venice, with a brace of lesser-known movies – this year María Alche’s “A Family Submerged,” Eugenio Canevari’s “Figuras” and Ignacio Juricic’s “Enigma” – whose presence in such august company only serves to highlight their titles all the more.
Three titles are drawn from Cannes Directors’ Fortnight – an indirect tribute to the passion for Latin American movies of Edouard Waintrop, Directors’ Fortnight head from 2012 to this year’s edition.

Veteran developer Jeremy Wood pulls no punches before he rolls out the pitch for Frostkeep Studios “Rend,” the game he’s been diligently cranking away at for more than two years. “Simply put, most of the time, most survival games just aren’t that fun,” he says, as the producer piloting the demo hacks away at a tiny tree to gather wood for his all-important settlement. “There’s a kernel of brilliance there that keeps people going, but the overall design isn’t conducive to interesting play. Players aren’t really incentivized to cooperate, or to play in an interesting way. Frankly, we hope to change that.”
It’s an intriguing statement, but it has a familiar ring to it – you can almost hear it echo all around the clogged halls of the La Convention Center, especially during E3. But who can blame him? After all, every game developer wants...

The world of online survival game “Rust” is often bloody and brutal, so its latest update is adding a safe space where players can just BBQ and chill.
The Compound Update adds two big new features to “Rust.” The first one is, naturally, a secure compound. Inside, players trade, craft, or just hang out — as long as they don’t attack or loot anyone. If they do, heavily-armed scientists and their turrets will mark them as hostile and use lethal force. A player’s hostile status persists across death in an attempt to prevent griefing, developer Facepunch Studios said.
“It’s probably going to be gamed pretty hard, so we’ll have to just keep iterating, but this will bring a new dimension to the game that we’re very excited to see play out,” Facepunch said. “We originally intended for people to set up these kind of zones with peacekeeper turrets,...

"I just want to disappear." The first official trailer has debuted for an indie drama from Brazil titled Rust, which is currently premiering at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival this month in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition category. Directed by Aly Muritiba, the film deals with a group of high school teens and a case of sexual abuse that gets even worse when a private video leaks to the entire school. The film specifically focuses on the brewing relationship between teens Tati and Renet, as well as their home lives. The film's cast is lead by Giovanni de Lorenzi, Tifanny Dopke, Enrique Diaz, and Clarissa Kiste. This looks like a very strong drama from Brazil addressing a very important topic of the times - and how everything gets even crazier when it's spread among teens in high school. Seems like it's worth catching at the festival. Here's the first official trailer for Aly Muritiba's Rust,...

While the Sundance Film Festival is becoming known as the place where the next awards season favorites are found, it’s also a terrific platform for world cinema. Some of our favorite foreign film have been discovered in Park City, and the Brazilian picture “Rust” looks like one that can’t be missed this year at Sundance. Today, we’re excited to debut the exclusive trailer for the movie.
Directed by Aly Muritiba, and starring Giovanni De Lorenzi, Tifanny Dopke, Enrique Diaz, Clarissa Kiste, Dudah Azevedo, and Pedro Inoue, the story follows a teenager whose world changes when an intimate video leaks to her entire school.

Exclusive: Several years ago, after the death of his father, Corbin Bernsen — well-known for his role in L.A. Law — wrote, directed and starred in Rust, a feature that he created to explore his own faith. The 2010 film follows a man of the cloth who loses his faith but eventually finds his way back. Bernsen has continued to produce faith-based films, most recently partnering with Pat Robertson’s Regent University on his latest — a romantic comedy, In-Lawfully Yours. With…...

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"Fade to Black" (2010)

Remember the soap box derby? Me neither, but Corbin Bernsen still does. In fact, he remembers it so fondly his next movie project is not only about the derby race, but also about saving the whole institution of flying down a large hill in a wooden box on wheels. The Hollywood Reporter has it that Bernsen.s next directing project will be 25 Hill, a story about a boy losing his father, and with that a chance at competing in the local soap box derby race. The film has a small budget (500k), but will be community centric. Akron, Ohio is the location and Bernsen was attracted to the project when he heard the soap box derby had massive outstanding debt. His goal with 25 Hill is raising enough money to save the derby. Bernsen.s last project, Rust is in the same community-based vein. It.s a movie that stemmed from...

The last time Corbin Bernsen, the actor-turned-indie director, stepped behind a camera, it was to help out a small town in Saskatchewan, making a movie that mobilized the community.
Now Bernsen is setting his sights closer to home, on Akron, Ohio, with the hopes of saving an ailing soap box derby tradition.
Bernsen is directing "25 Hill," a family-friendly production with a budget of about $500,000 that begins shooting Wednesday in the town once nicknamed the Rubber City. He aims to save its nearly 75-year-old racing league, the All-American Soap Box Derby.
In September, Bernsen read an article in USA Today about how the derby had a debt of $623,000 with a local bank and was facing extinction.
"The derby used to be this huge event; 50,000 people used to show up, and Chevrolet was a huge sponsor," Bernsen said Monday from his production offices in Akron. "But the times, the economy, the kids got into other interests.

Though 15 years have passed since "L.A. Law" (1986–94) went off the air, Corbin Bernsen says he continues to be typecast as the vacant, philandering Arnie Becker. "In fact, it's assumed that's who I am," insists the 55-year-old Los Angeles–born actor. Until fairly recently, he adds, he was viewed as such a lightweight he couldn't even get a decent agent. "I finally said 'Screw it, I'll do my own thing,' " he says.Bernsen has now turned his talents to helming and starring in his own films. Among these are the horror thriller "Dead Air" and "Donna on Demand," which he also wrote and which pokes fun at his own 1980s celebrity image. Each is a kind of morality tale, he says. More recently, he wrapped "Rust," a faith-based flick he wrote, directed, and stars in; he's looking for distribution."A part of me looks at life from a dismal perspective,...

First up for Cherokee will be the feature film "Rust," a co-production in association with Kipling Film Prods. and Mission Pictures. Bernsen wrote the faith-based feature and will direct and star as well.
