James Gunn has been sharing his excitement for the upcoming start of Superman: Legacy this week. Disney is well-known for its sea of Christmas releases. Dive into the magic of the season with these wholesome ones ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Disney is known for taking Christmas time very seriously. On November 1, 2023, Variety printed an article wherein a Marvel insider -- careful to keep their name hidden -- noted that Marvel Studios was "truly ****ed" when it came to the character of Kang (Jonathan Majors). Kang, some Marvel fans might be able to tell you, is an interdimensional, time-traveling supervillain who is in league with myriad duplicates of himself from across the multiverse. Kang is hyper-intelligent and aims to erase whole timelines from the multiverse until he is essentially the only sentient being left standing. Or something. His motivation isn't wholly interesting. An upcoming film, as Disney announced in 2022, will be called "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty," so it seems clear that the company wants to arrange their next major team-up event -- a la "Avengers: Endgame" -- around Kang. The insider quoted in Variety has revealed that Kang is underwhelming. This, in addition to the slew of bad press surrounding Majors and his assault trial.

As the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences continues to figure out how and when to finally hold this year’s Daytime Emmys — delayed in June due to the WGA strike — it has gone ahead and announced the nominations for this year’s 2nd Annual Children’s & Family Emmys.
There’s no date yet for this year’s Chidren’s & Family Emmys — NATAS is likely waiting for a hopeful soon resolution to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike before firming up dates. But last year, winners were announced during two ceremonies—one focused on creative and technical arts, and the other to performances and programming—at Wilshire Ebell Theatre on December 10 and 11. This year’s Cafe will likely be held around the same time — and NATAS could very well use that timeframe to simultaneously finally hold the Daytime Emmys as well.

Amid the debate over whether movies have gotten too long is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the longest entry, Avengers: Endgame, surpassing three hours. Those aren’t Martin Scorsese numbers and don’t “require” an intermission, but that undoubtedly puts it in “epic” territory. One movie that won’t be joining the MCU’s penchant for excessive runtimes is its next, The Marvels, which clocks in at a mere 105 minutes, according to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).
The fact that we feel the need to even point out just how different The Marvels’ runtime is compared to most of its predecessors really says something about the overinflated lengths within the MCU. Consider this: eight other MCU movies have exceeded the 140-minute mark, with three outside of Endgame hitting two and a half hours or more. But we also have to wonder: Is The Marvels really all that short...

In 2021, Marvel entered a new phase.
Not just Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which would catch up with new and old heroes in the aftermath of “Avengers: Endgame,” but a phase of multi-pronged storytelling synergy unlike anything before it. In Phase 4, the MCU embraced television with multiple Disney+ streaming series, driving subscribers to the platform with more Marvel content than ever before.
Major franchises like have previous explored the coexistence of live-action films and TV shows — as well as cartoons, comics, and graphic novels — but with clear narrative priorities. There hasn’t been a new tentpole Star Wars movie since Disney+, so those series haven’t had to share the spotlight yet; meanwhile, the MCU churns out both theatrical releases and streaming series with regularity, all of it set in roughly the same timeline and universe with interconnected characters, plot lines, and settings.

When we’re talking about media franchises, not movie franchises, media franchises, that means that we’re talking about a brand that spawned more than just movies and TV shows. And the Marvel Cinematic Universe did just that. While it’s primarily centered on movies and television series became an official part of the canon in 2021, MCU also spawned many comic book and video game tie-ins. Apart from that, the MCU also spawned animated series, television specials, and themed areas in Disneylands around the world.
We’ve seen everything from the MCU so far, but television specials are pretty interesting in this case. The first television special set in the MCU canon, ‘Werewolf by Night,’ was released in October 2022, and many fans deemed it a Halloween special of the franchise. After that, ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’ was released in November, featuring the titular team and their way of spending the Christmas Holidays.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” could have looked a lot different if things had gone another direction when it came to casting.
Recently, Adam Brody sat down for a chat with the “Just for Variety” podcast, and opened up about the time he read for the role of Peter Quill — a.k.a. Star-Lord — in James Gunn’s cosmic adventure installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“I wanted that one,” Brody said of the role, which eventually went to Chris Pratt, whom the “O.C.” alum admitted was a “better fit” for the part, ultimately.
“He is bigger, stronger, but tonally, I really dug it,” Brody lamented.
Pratt starred as the space-faring smuggler and thief who stole fans’ hearts when the first film hit theaters in 2014.
He went on to reprise the role in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”, “Avengers: Infinity War”, “Avengers: End Game”, “Thor: Love and Thunder”, “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special...

Followed with huge anticipation and faith that it can bring back the taste of pre-Endgame MCU, James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 became the biggest blockbuster of this Summer season. The movie grossed $843 million worldwide, which currently makes him the second highest-grossing movie this year. The movie gathered positive reviews, with many praising Gunn’s direction and the emotional touch that Rocket’s origin story brought.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the final movie of this trilogy and James Gunn’s final Marvel movie. These days, the Marvel Cinematic Universe looks more like the Marvel TV Universe.
Technically, the MCU does include Marvel Studios’ serialized streaming projects, along with the major motion pictures that first rolled out with 2008’s “Iron Man” and continued through with May’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” but only one of those arms appears strong enough of late to carry the narrative gauntlet (so to speak) — and it’s not the one historically tasked with doing so.
Over the past two-and-a-half years, Marvel’s television content has eclipsed its feature films in quality, star power, and creative integrity. The TV arm of the MCU launched in January 2021 with “WandaVision”, which remains the studio’s most remarkable and mesmerizing series to date.
The rest may not reach that initial bar, but each title takes a stab at revamping, retooling, and rethinking the way audiences consume superhero stories, often with emerging talent at the helm.

"The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" was a little treat for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in late 2022. While waiting for Phase 5 to kick off in earnest with "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," James Gunn delivered a sweet, simple, and charming Christmas special that was widely praised, even if it wasn't what fans of the MCU were accustomed to. It was a relatively small-scale story without a ton of action. But Gunn did originally consider a more action-heavy version of the special before deciding against it.
Speaking with FilmCon ahead of the special's release, Gunn addressed how he cooked up the story. Ultimately, he landed on a story involving Mantis and Drax trying to kidnap Kevin Bacon as a gift for Star-Lord to help their pal get into the spirit of Christmas. It's a combination of silly and sweet, though more action was on the table before the director changed his mind.

"Out on the third planet closest to the sun, there's a special celebration, and it sounds quite fun." It's called the "Guardians of the Galaxy" saga, but sadly, despite playing out across a whole movie trilogy and a Disney+ holiday special — complete with an alien band performing a musical number — it has never featured Dave Bautista's character, Drax the Destroyer, wailing on the cosmic saxophone like Kenny G.

As someone who has read comics for my entire life and owns more than one cape, it broke my heart to write an article about superhero fatigue. I love superheroes and the movies and shows about them. I'm just getting tired of having to do homework to watch something or realize that if I skip one property in these franchises, I'll be woefully left behind. They all connect in so many ways that you cannot miss a second.
That was fine when there were, like, two movies in a franchise per year, but these days it's overwhelming. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is so twisty that many of my family and friends have dropped off. It's not because they don't love the films. It's because they don't have enough hours in the day to watch.

At the very end of James Gunn's 2014 film "Guardians of the Galaxy," a character called the Collector (Benicio Del Toro) sat among the remnants of his high-end collection of galactic rarities, destitute that it had been largely destroyed earlier in the movie. One of his collectibles, a living Soviet space dog, licks his face in sympathy. A voice from off-screen notes that the dog is gross. It was none other than Howard the Duck (voice of Seth Green), a 1970s Marvel Comics comedy staple and star of a notoriously terrible 1986 feature film. It seems Howard was also one of the Collector's prisoners. One might admire Gunn's chutzpah for including Howard the Duck in his film, seeing as the character still bears the weight of the 1986 film's failure on his shoulders.
Howard's appearance was fun, but it wasn't so well-received that it lead to a new Howard the Duck feature film.

[Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for both “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and its post-credits scenes.]
While “Guardians of the Galaxy” filmmaker James Gunn has never played coy about his plans to close out his Marvel Cinematic Universe trilogy with this week’s “Vol. 3”, the wider franchise doesn’t seem to be too pumped about the supposed end of the road for its most distinct band of intergalactic weirdos.
So it should come as little surprise that when the third film in the trilogy closes out, it leaves the possibility of more adventures wide open, care of a pair of new post-credits scenes that tease a future for (some) of our spacey heroes.
By way of catch up: Gunn’s film ends with Peter Quill Aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) finally heading home to Earth to reunite with his grandfather, where he will also presumably try out being a regular ol’ guy for once, while leaving Rocket...

Warning: this post contains spoilers for "Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3."
Director James Gunn announced long ago that his new film "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" will be his last in this particular series. Gunn has famously moved over to Warner Bros. to construct a brand new interconnected series of movies based on DC Comics, leaving him no time to play around with the Marvel Comics characters he helped popularize on film. As such, "Vol. 3" feels very much like a "final chapter," as several characters will end up parting ways. Contrary to what popular wisdom might dictate, Gunn does not take the opportunity to kill off his entire cast by the end, leaving them all alive to pursue their passions. Many of the Guardians, however, will retire. The fact that any one of their stories has a proper ending is a rarity for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. More often,...

With "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," we're saying goodbye (or at least a "so long for now") to some old friends. Though we don't know the future of these weird and wonderful characters after the final James Gunn Marvel film, we have seen enough to appreciate every single one of them. That's even more true for the actors who play the roles.
Sean Gunn -- brother to writer/director James Gunn -- has played the role of the Xandarian Kraglin Obfonteri since the first "Guardians" film. Kraglin started out as a henchman for Ravager leader Yondu (Michael Rooker), and over the course of appearances in "Guardians Vol. 2," "Infinity War," "Endgame," "Thor: Love and Thunder," and "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special," Kraglin has become a full-fledged member of the Guardians. There's a lot going on in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's 32nd film, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3." Between animal cruelty, kids in cages, grotesque biomechanical creatures, a beheading, a peeled face, and one anti-climactic f-bomb ("Open the f***ing door!"), it's arguably too much. Writer-director James Gunn's belated trilogy ender is all over the place, both tonally and narratively, and it's easy to lose track of what's happening or why, even if you come into it with the best intentions and are still invested in the MCU as it chugs along in Phase Five.
It's been six years since "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," and while the Guardians have remained active on the big screen in other films, moviegoers who missed "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" on Disney+ may be confused by the presence...

One of the most devastating deaths in 2018's "Avengers: Infinity War" is the loss of Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), who's sacrificed by her father, Thanos (Josh Brolin), so he can get all the Infinity Stones. However, 2019's "Avengers: Endgame" - which had even more losses of iconic Marvel heroes - undid Gamora's ending. The movie, which involves a complicated time-travel plot, sees Thanos from 2014 come into "Endgame"'s present day (in 2023) with Gamora by his side. That Gamora not only hasn't left Thanos's service, but she's also never met any of the Guardians besides her sister Nebula (Karen Gillan), whom she has a contentious relationship with.
At the end of the movie, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) uses the Infinity Gauntlet to instantly kill Thanos and his army; the action also kills Tony himself. But, somehow, Tony doesn't kill 2014 Gamora, even though she's technically on Thanos's side. Back in 2019 at Comic-Con,...

The "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise has introduced plenty of colorful characters over the past decade, from a talking raccoon named Rocket, to a sentient tree named Groot, to the antennae-sporting alien, Mantis. Yet few new additions have been as instantaneously accepted as friend-shaped like Cosmo, the adorable space dog voiced by Maria Bakalova in "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special." So far, we've only gotten a bit of screen time with Cosmo, but we know that she's telekinetic, loves Kevin Bacon, took a liking to Sean Gunn's Kraglin, and is, in the parlance of dog owners, "food motivated."
Cosmo also wears a pretty distinctive outfit: she's decked out in an old-fashioned spacesuit that's a bit like the kind astronauts wore during the Space Race. It features a patch that says Cccp and a rust red collar opening that could connect to a helmet — complete with what looks like a tiny sensor antenna.

Maria Bakalova may be relatively new to the "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise, but you can't say she's not committed to her role. The actress best known for her performances in movies like "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm" and "Bodies Bodies Bodies" made her Marvel debut in "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" last year, playing the friendly space dog Cosmo. Though Cosmo isn't exactly the star of the Guardians team, she pretty much immediately became a fan favorite, thanks in part to Bakalova's chipper voice coming from the Russian Golden Retriever. Bakalova lent more than her voice to the role, though; she also gave a motion capture performance that she says allowed her to get in touch with her imagination.

James Gunn may now be orchestrating the future of DC — he's got a full slate ahead of him, and he's directing the first of them, "Superman: Legacy" — but he's still personally invested in Marvel for a little while. The filmmaker is set to wrap up the trilogy that he kicked off almost a decade ago with "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," which arrives six years on from its predecessor thanks to his firing over controversial old tweets, the Covid-19 pandemic, and Gunn's work on "The Suicide Squad."

Sebastian Stan and Maria Bakalova, both veterans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, are attached to star in a new spy comedy for Paramount Pictures with Paul Feig attached to produce and potentially direct, TheWrap has confirmed.
Jenny Bicks, a screenwriter known for “The Greatest Showman” and “Rio 2,” is writing the script based off of an original pitch. Plot details are currently unknown.
Feig is probably best known for directing “Bridesmaids,” which began a string of profitable, high-concept, female led comedies like “The Heat” and “Spy.” In 2016 he directed the all-female “Ghostbusters” reboot, which became a cultural flashpoint, cutting short a potential franchise and leaving Sony to quickly revert to a more traditional approach with the release of “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” in 2021.
Since “Ghostbusters,” Feig directed the delicious dark comedy “A Simple Favor,” “Last Christmas” and most recently “The School for Good and Evil” for Netflix. Feig is currently in production on “Grand Death Lotto,...

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is set to abandon one of the franchise’s most popular traditions.
The film, directed by James Gunn, follows on from the first two Guardians films, as well as other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) entries such as Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (2022).
Released in 2014, the first Guardians of the Galaxy was a smash hit for Marvel, and drew particular praise from fans for its infectious jukebox soundtrack.
In the film, music is played from a mixtape given to Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) by his late mother.
The soundtrack, comprising a host of 1970s rock hits such as “Moonage Daydream” by David Bowie, “Hooked on a Feeling” by Blue Suede, and “Come and Get Your Love” by Redbone, was released as an album, and went on to top the Billboard 200 chart.

On May 5, 2023, the final installment in James Gunn's hugely popular "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy will land in theaters. Gunn has made no secret of the fact that "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" will close the book on this chapter of the MCU, and it could be the last time we see some of the Guardians themselves, including Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), Drax (Dave Bautista), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Groot (Vin Diesel), and Nebula (Karen Gillan). In 2022, before he premiered the movie's teaser trailer at San Diego Comic-Con, Gunn told the crowd: "This is the end of that story. I'm sorry. Some stories have an end. It doesn't mean everybody dies."
Of course, that doesn't mean nobody dies. Indeed, Gunn has been equally candid in pointing out that "Vol. 3" will be an emotional rollercoaster for audiences. A few months after Sdcc, a Twitter...

Victoria Alonso, the invaluable Marvel executive and EP of several films and television series that helped put the studio on the map, has exited the company after 17 successful years. Alonso left the company on Friday, with her most recent title being the Marvel Studios President of Physical and Postproduction, VFX, and Animation Production.
Alonso’s impact on Marvel Studios dates back to 2008’s Iron Man, in which she was a co-producer. Alonso co-produced Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain American: The First Avenger before ranking up to an executive producer on The Avengers. Deadline has confirmed that the esteemed Marvel executive and EP of several movies, Victoria Alonso, has exited Marvel Studios after a 17-year run. No reasons were given for her departure, which was effective Friday, and it’s not yet clear where she’s heading. Her exit is quite a shocker given her amiable demeanor and passion for all things Marvel.
Her most recent title at Marvel Studios was President, Physical and Postproduction, VFX and Animation Production. Alonso was recently a producer on the Oscar nominated international feature film Argentina, 1985.
She joined Marvel in 2006 as chief of visual effects and post-production, and was involved in the launch of 2008’s Iron Man as a co-producer, counting additional co-producer credits on Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011) and Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), before being elevated to EP on on Avengers (2012).

Almost 15 years into the Marvel Cinematic Universe experiment, comprising 30 total movies (and counting) and dozens of hours of television, even a franchise like this runs the risk of eventually feeling a little stale. Just don't tell that to head honcho Kevin Feige and his army of talented collaborators. The Marvel braintrust has worked tirelessly to stave off the inevitable for as long as humanly possible, refusing to rest on their laurels after completing the so-called Infinity Saga and instead gearing up for yet another massive, multi-project storyline.
This one, by all accounts, will pit our remaining Avengers against the threat of the fearsome Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors), introduced on the big screen for the first time in Peyton Reed's "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania."

Phase 5 of the MCU is about to kick off with “Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania,” but not long after that comes “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3.” While the Guardians had supporting roles in Taika Waititi‘s “Thor: Love And Thunder,” and turned up recently in “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special,” this final edition of the franchise—at least the final installment for writer/director James Gunn—promises to be a big epic finale which will reunite the Guardians with Zoe Saldaña as Gamora, who’s been missing in action since “Avengers: Endgame.”
James Gunn’s tweets about it promise a story he “has been cooking up for years,” and in the past, he’s described it as “so big and dark.”

“Elvis” took the crown at the 10th annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards, leading all films. Presented Saturday evening at the Beverly Hilton, the Baz Luhrmann spectacle in which hair and makeup helped transform Austin Butler into Elvis Presley at every stage of his illustrious career, won two awards in the five feature-film categories, for period and/or character make-up and period and/or character hair styling.
Other film winners included “Everything Everywhere All at Once” for contemporary make-up, “The Whale” for special make-up effects and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” for contemporary hair styling.
“Elvis,” “The Whale,” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” are all nominated for the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar, along with “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Batman.”
Since the Muahs Awards started up again after a hiatus in 2013, all but one Oscar winner for makeup and hair had previously won an award from the guild.

Marvel Studios is entering a rebuilding phase with the Feb. 17 launch of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. After Phase 4 laid the foundation for the multiverse post-Avengers: Endgame and expanded prolifically across film and television, Phase 5 is shaping up to be more narratively focused, and a little more patient with its rollout, as all roads lead to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty (May 2, 2025) and Avengers: Secret Wars (May 1, 2026).
If Phase 5 can continue to take some of the creative risks of Phase 4, while keeping sight of its arc in terms of both themes and escalating threats, it could prove to be Marvel Studios’ most successful film line-up yet, or at least the one that stops the handwringing over The Multiverse Saga being able to live up to The Infinity Saga.
There’s been some expressed (some of it overblown) concern that audiences are losing interest in the MCU post-Endgame. It’s the...

In case you missed the memo, Dave Bautista is leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe behind him. Over the years since 2014's "Guardians of the Galaxy" catapulted his movie career to the next level, the world's greatest wrestler turned actor (with John Cena coming in second) has proven his dedication to the craft, collaborating with the likes of Denis Villeneuve, Sam Mendes, and Rian Johnson while also lending his talents to smaller, off-kilter projects ("Hotel Artemis") and even international genre films ("Master Z: Ip Man Legacy"). Suffice it to say, Bautista is the real deal, and he's here to stay.
With Bautista now collecting accolades for his performance in M. Night Shyamalan's "Knock at the Cabin" (which Chris Evangelista reviewed for /Film), he's already started 2023 off on the right foot. What's more, his dramatic turn in Shyamalan's thriller stands in sharp contrast to his broadly comedic work as Drax the...

The Terminal List is continuing — and becoming a franchise for Amazon Studios. I have learned that Prime Video has finalized a Season 2 renewal for the hit series starring and executive produced by Chris Pratt, and also has picked up an untitled prequel/Ben Edwards origin series headlined and executive produced by Taylor Kitsch, from The Terminal List creator/executive producer David Digilio.

There's no shortage of emotional moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While a number of those instances are celebratory, there are just as many heartbreaking ones as well. Steve Rogers' goodbye to Peggy Carter in "Captain America: The First Avenger," Aunt May's demise courtesy of the Green Goblin, Angela Bassett's whole performance in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," and basically all of "Avengers: Endgame" come to mind.
In terms of consistently hitting you right in the feels, James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" series delivers each time. All you have to do is recall the quotes "We are Groot" and "He may have been your father, boy, but he wasn't your daddy," and you know exactly what I'm talking about. But as we prepare for the final chapter of the fan-favorite filmmaker's story about this lovable bunch of a-holes, Gunn recently shared that there are still some tear-inducing moments on the horizon.
