Comedian Zarna Garg has launched a podcast on the heels of her Amazon Prime Video special “One in a Billion.”
Garg was recently highlighted as one of Variety‘s 10 Comics to Watch for 2023. “The Zarna Garg Show,” which bowed Aug. 1 across major podcast platforms and YouTube, features conversations with her multi-generational Indian American family on what she describes as “bringing taboo topics out in the open.” The first installment features Garg, her husband, Shalabh, and their three children: Zoya, 20, Brij, 17, and Veer, 11.
Garg is a lawyer and homemaker turned screenwriter and comedian. She first gained recognition through her TikTok posts and for her standup performances at such venues as Comedy Cellar and Carolines on Broadway in New York. CNBC described her as a “zany, outspoken voice of the Indian American woman.”
In 2019, Garg’s debut screenplay, “Rearranged,” won the award for comedy screenplay at the 2019 Austin Film Festival. She was...

After almost a month streaming on Netflix, Jennifer Lopez‘s action-thriller “The Mother” continues to reign over the global top 10 chart for the week of May 29. Read on for this week’s analysis.
This week “The Mother” was once again the #1 English movie across the globe with 16.5 million hours viewed, but it also entered Netflix’s all-time chart as the eighth most-watched English language film on the streamer with 229.3 million viewing hours. It was only the number-one movie in Jordan, of all places, but it remained in the top 10 for 89 countries total.
The rest of that top 10 was made up of movies from other studios that previously had theatrical releases with DreamWorks Animation’s “The Boss Baby” taking second place with 10.6 million hours viewed, followed by “Missing” with 8.1 million viewing hours, and even Mark Wahlberg‘s 2007 action movie “Shooter” placed in the top five with 7.5 million viewing hours.

Mj Delaney has been with “Ted Lasso” since the beginning and the Emmy winner can only describe the three-season journey so far as an “absolute pleasure.” “This show, in particular, is such a lovely bunch of people and we’ve all just been a happy family from the start,” Delaney tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Directors panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “Being able to go three seasons with them, it was so good from the get-go in terms of the dynamics behind the scenes that you just kind of build on that and get to know each other.”
And even three seasons in, there are still firsts for the Brit. Delaney has directed two episodes in each season so far, but unlike the first two installments, in which she helmed a block at the end of the season, she directed the first two episodes of...

Don’t expect any drive-in screenings, virtual screenings, mask mandates or reduced capacity theaters at the 30th annual Hamptons Intl. Film Festival. This year’s edition will look and feel as it did way back in 2019.
The Long Island-based fest, which runs Oct. 7-16, will screen 69 feature films and 51 shorts that are 54 female-directed and represent 34 countries from around the world.
Also back at Hiff are a bevy of fancy cocktail hours and the fest’s Rowdy Talks series, which will include a conversation with director, screenwriter and producer Chris Columbus.
New this year? The festival will run over 10 days.
“Last year, we were seven days instead of our typical five,” says Hiff artistic director David Nugent. “We did that to see if people would be interested in coming to see films midweek and they were, so we decided to expand.”

It’s a weird time to watch politics on television, and I’m not just talking about political discussions that take place nightly on CNN or Fox News. If you watch stuff like “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah” or “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver,” they’d tell you since Trump left office there’s been little respite. Our Covid deaths remain high, women’s reproductive rights are being demolished, and police brutality still happens, nothing’s changed. But to watch political limited series or documentaries, there’s a feeling some type of wall has been breached. Like “Gutsy,” “The Lincoln Project” feels too simplistic in its presentation of the nuances that ended up destroying the group internally. Add in the fact that our world already feels worse than it did in 2020 and it feels instantly dated.
You probably remember seeing at least one ad crafted by the Lincoln...

During Variety‘s Power of Women dinner, presented by Lifetime, on Wednesday, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton spoke, and the former secretary of state took the Iranian government to task.
“I could not stand up here tonight without also recognizing the brave women in Iran who are standing up for their rights, their freedom against a horrific regime who stays in power in large measure because they oppress women,” Clinton said. “And I could not stand here without thinking about the women in Afghanistan who are being deprived of education, or the women on the front lines in Ukraine who are trying to defend their country against the barbarity of Putin’s invasion.”
“So we have a lot of work to do,” she continued. “It’s work in our own country to keep our progress going and not let the clock be turned back, and it’s also caring about the rest of the world.

The Academy needs to create new revenue streams that do not rely on the Oscars show, but it also needs to bring the Oscars to a position of “power, honorability and importance,” Academy leaders told the organization’s membership in an all-members meeting on Saturday.
The meeting, led by new Academy CEO Bill Kramer and new president Janet Yang, took place in the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and was available to be attended virtually by members not in Los Angeles.
In some ways, the gathering was reminiscent of the all-members meeting held by then-president Hawk Koch and CEO Dawn Hudson in May, 2013, which took place simultaneously in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. At that point, the Academy consisted of about 6,000 members and was predominantly white and male; the #OscarsSoWhite protests had yet to push the organization to become more diverse, while the Academy Museum was in the planning stages.

August theatrical releases were a bit sparse, but “Partner Track,” “Lost Ollie” and seven other book-based projects found their way onto streamers last month, including HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon.” September has more theatrical releases, but fewer book adaptations to look forward to. There’s also “The Silent Twins” starring Letitia Wright and Jodhi May as well as Andrew Dominik’s feature film “Blonde” adapted from Joyce Carol Oates’ book about the career of Marilyn Monroe.

It is the rare document to land slots at the superfecta of Venice, Telluride, Toronto and New York, and Poitras said she thought “long and hard” about whether or not to voice criticism at the same venues feting her latest work. Nevertheless, she said, “journalists need to ask hard questions.”

Oscar-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras sharply criticized the Toronto and Venice film festivals Tuesday for programming documentaries connected with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, suggesting the decision bordered on a “whitewashing” of history.
Her remarks came at the Toronto Film Festival’s Doc Conference, a day after Poitras’s new documentary, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, made its North American premiere in Toronto. The film about artist Nan Goldin and her crusade against OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma and its owners, the Sackler family, won the Golden Lion at Venice.
Poitras attended Venice, as did Clinton, the latter in support of her Apple TV+ docuseries Gutsy. Clinton and daughter Chelsea Clinton then headed to TIFF, where they unveiled In Her Hands, a documentary executive produced by the Clintons that focuses on one of Afghanistan’s few female mayors.

Documentarian Laura Poitras is calling out the Toronto International Film Festival and Venice Film Festival for providing a “platform” to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Oscar winner Poitras criticized the TIFF and Venice programmers for not asking “hard questions” as to the purpose of the former First Lady’s film endeavors. Clinton and daughter Chelsea Clinton attended both Venice and TIFF to launch AppleTV+ docuseries “Gutsy,” as well as support “In Her Hands,” directed by Tamana Ayazi and Marcel Mettelsiefen and produced by the Clinton family.
“Hillary Clinton was actively involved in the wars and occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan,” Poitras stated during TIFF’s Doc Conference (via Variety). “She supported the escalation of troops. And I really find it troubling that this is all being forgotten and we’re providing a platform.”
Poitras discussed the prosecution of Julian Assange, saying “there is nothing more serious that threatens the First Amendment,...

In the last few years, possibly aided by the rise of reality television, it’s not weird to see those best known for their work on Capitol Hill cross platforms to become involved in the motion picture or television industry.
Of course, plenty have traded DC for CNN. And former President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama took it a step further when they created Higher Ground Productions, which has produced documentaries like “Crip Camp” and Netflix comedies like “Fatherhood.” But getting into the content game in front of the cameras involves the creation of a persona that strikes a balance between the political and personal. People may be divided on politics, but everyone can come together for a heartwarming film or television show (theoretically). That’s the hope, at least, behind Hillary and Chelsea Clinton’s “Gutsy.”

“Yes, I’m dying”.
That’s the stark tabloid headline People magazine runs in gigantic letters alongside a photo of Dottie Roman in the first episode of Monarch, Fox’s lavish new musical soap about a ruthless country music dynasty.
Dottie, played by Susan Sarandon with ballsy swagger and a closer-to-God blowout, seethes over the cover story about her own terminal cancer as she primps for her last ever awards show. She’s the “queen of country music” – think Dolly Parton big – and she’s determined to go out with a smile on her face, even if it’s as fake as her outrage. Dottie leaked the story to the press herself, we eventually learn. She probably even signed off on the picture – red lips pursed in defiance, peeking out from under the wide brim of her signature cowboy hat with its diamante band. Everything in the cloistered world of country music runs through Dottie.

“Gutsy,” which is now streaming on Apple TV+, plunged Hillary and Chelsea Clinton deeper into their goal of telling the stories of gutsy women that they began with their 2019 “The Book Of Gutsy Women.” With many of their previous subjects having passed away, they turned their attention to other female trailblazers from celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Amy Schumer to advocates fighting child marriage, promoting indigenous representation and fostering supportive communities for LGBTQ+ people.

Jennifer Lawrence brought serious starpower to the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, appearing at the world premiere of her new film “Causeway.”
But despite the big, Hollywood name “Causeway” was a quieter character study.
Lawrence stars in and produces the film, in which she plays a soldier returning to civilian life in New Orleans. The film also stars Brian Tyree Henry, Linda Emond, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Russell Harvard. “Causeway” is the feature directorial debut of theater veteran Lila Neugebauer, with a script written by Elizabeth Sanders, Luke Goebel and Ottessa Moshfegh.
Her character in the film, Lynsey, is desperate to redeploy. When asked what drove her towards the decision, Lawrence said she found a common ground. “I felt something in my gut when I read this,” she said. “That kind of immediate, ‘We have to make this.’ I identify with that feeling of trying to find your home.

Hillary Clinton is pushing for politicians to take greater action on gun control.
“Gun violence in our country is out of control. And it’s killing our kids,” she said. “It’s outrageous we let this happen, and that there are people who worship guns more than they worship life.”
From mass shootings to the perils of social media, the former secretary of state and her daughter, Chelsea, spoke about a range of issues at a keynote conversation on Saturday at the Toronto International Film Festival. The two touched down in Canada to promote their documentary series “Gutsy,” which premiered Sept. 9 on Apple TV+.
The hour-long conversation, moderated by Sophie Grégoire Trudeau (the wife of Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau), was therapeutic and open as the mother-daughter duo got candid about motherhood, bullying, menopause and “the catastrophe of the 2016 election.”

Hillary and Chelsea Clinton were in conversation at the TIFF Bell Lightbox about their AppleTV+ docuseries Gutsy, which sees the former Secretary of State and her daughter talking to pioneering women artists, activists and leaders.
The conversation’s moderator Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, the wife of Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau, immediately brought up Queen Elizabeth II, who died on Sept. 8 at the age of 96.
“I did have the pleasure and privilege of meeting her several times,” said Clinton of the late monarch, whom she described as “engaging and curious,” before adding, “She wanted to know about you. She rarely expressed her own opinions — it was not a part of her queenly duties — but was very quick to inquire about what you were thinking.”
Trudeau asked Hillary what question would she have asked the queen if she had the opportunity. “I would [ask] her, ‘Where...

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton found herself picking up a new skill set from working on her Apple TV+ docuseries “Gutsy,” with her daughter, Chelsea Clinton – how to produce television.
“First of all, I learned how much goes into a production,” Secretary Clinton told TheWrap when she and her daughter spoke with TheWrap earlier this week, and we asked what she learned from the other side of the camera. “I’m used to just walking on the set, sitting down, getting interviewed, getting up and leaving. And we were there from, you know, putting up the lights and getting the camera angles and all that went into producing our interviews, and then the entire docuseries.”
In “Gutsy,” which takes inspiration from the Clinton women’s book of the same name, Secretary Clinton and Chelsea traveled globally, interviewing trailblazers and changemakers, all of whom provide examples of what it means to be a “gutsy” woman.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details of the Hillary Clinton & Chelsea Clinton Gutsy docuseries, which debuted today on Apple TV+.
“I hope it really starts a lot of conversations and opens a lot of eyes and some hearts and minds to the variety of people and the different stories that we can all learn from,” says Hillary Clinton of Gutsy, the docuseries from the former Secretary of State and daughter Chelsea that launched Friday on Apple TV+.
“We have eight episodes, we have a lot of women in each episode, but it’s just a beginning to what I hope is a broader discussion about are we going to go backwards?” the winner of the popular vote in the 2016 presidential election added of the larger implications of the show. “Are we going to try to put women and others into little boxes and tell them that they have to go...

Hillary Clinton is no stranger to film festivals. In 2020, the former Secretary of State traveled to Sundance and Berlin to promote the Hulu docuseries about her career. However, this year Clinton arrived at the Toronto International Film Festival with her daughter Chelsea in a very different capacity — as executive producers. The pair launched the new film and TV company HiddenLight Productions in 2021, but the fruits of those labors just emerged this week.
Friday saw the premiere of the documentary “In Her Hands,” a portrait of former Afghan female mayor Zarifa Ghafari, which the company produced with Netflix. The movie, co-directed by Afghan filmmaker Tamana Ayazi and Oscar nominee Marcel Mettelsiefen (“Watani: My Homeland”) screened the same day as the release of the unscripted AppleTV+ miniseries “Gutsy,” which features the two Clintons in conversation with other famous women. Over the past few decades, Hillary Clinton has become identified — and occasionally mocked — for her signature pantsuits.
In “Gutsy”, the new Apple TV+ documentary series in which she co-stars with daughter Chlesea Clinton, the former Secretary of State reveals that she hasn’t worn a skirt “since 1999,” and explained why.
According to Clinton, while she was First Lady, she and then-president Bill Clinton visited Brazil in 1995, where she chose to wear a “first lady skirt suit” for the official visit.

This might sound hard to believe, but Hillary Clinton can relate to Kim Kardashian in some ways. Like the Keeping Up With the Kardashians alum, the former Secretary of State has been labeled as just one thing. For Hillary, she's seen as just a politician, with Kardashian being referred to as just a celebrity. But the former presidential hopeful and her daughter, Chelsea Clinton, are trying to show that people are so much more than their jobs in the new Apple TV+ docu-series Gutsy. "I was very struck by the work [Kardashian] had done on criminal justice and also her determination to become a lawyer," Hillary told E! News at the Gutsy premiere...

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Hillary Rodham Clinton and her daughter, Chelsea Clinton, are sitting on a park bench on the grounds of the Palais Royal.
The former secretary of state and US presidential nominee turns to her daughter and asks: “Do you know what happens if you drink too much tea in Paris?”
Chelsea, an International Relations DPhil who is also a children’s author and global health advocate, appears bewildered.
“You’re-a-peein’,” her mother – once the most powerful woman in politics – tells her with a guffaw.
Except the real punchline is that this is a scene from their new Apple TV Plus series called Gutsy. The joke, if you think about it, is that this is what one of the savviest and most successful people in American life has been reduced to doing for work.

Hillary Clinton remembered Queen Elizabeth II as “a woman who served with such honor and distinction” on Thursday, just hours after news broke of the longtime monarch’s death.
“We lost a woman who served with such honor and distinction from literally the time she was a child, until two days ago when she received the new prime minister,” Clinton told Variety at the New York premiere of “Gutsy,” her and daughter Chelsea Clinton’s new Apple TV+ docuseries. “And I was privileged to meet her and spend time with her. Probably one of the highlights of my time in public service was when I was secretary of state, staying in Buckingham Palace and talking with her about her gardens, which were a great love of hers, and actually walking around the gardens with her gardener and going to a white-tie dinner in the grand dining room. I had many really pleasant and wonderful conversations.

Apple TV+’s Gutsy is nothing if not wholesome. Hillary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton are plainly aiming for inspiration and edification with their docuseries interviewing heroes and luminaries from all walks of life, and they tend to find it whether they’re speaking with academics, activists or firefighters. The causes they highlight are largely unobjectionable, at least if your politics roughly align with the Clintons’; their subjects plainly admirable; their stories insistently empowering.
For a certain type of viewer — say, a devoted Clinton fan or a budding feminist in search of role models — it might make for a decent primer on the broad spectrum of issues affecting Americans today, from motherhood to environmentalism to the fight for LGBTQ rights. And its omnivorous interests and impressive access ensure that just about any viewer will be likely to find some segment they’ll connect with over its eight 40-minute episodes.

In the months after Donald Trump became president and a flush of liberal rage manifested in impassioned Women’s Marches across the country, Hillary Clinton took a sizeable step back from public life. Having been a flashpoint of both controversy and sympathy for her entire adult life, Clinton found herself having to forge a new kind of identity — one that wouldn’t be tied to any kind of political office, but could still use support from those Democrats whose first reaction to Trump’s inauguration was to crochet pink “pussyhats” and march as a unified pink wave of righteous fury.

Hillary Clinton had a confession to make on Tuesday’s “Tonight Show”.
The former United States secretary of state appeared on the show alongside her daughter Chelsea to promote their new Apple TV+ show “Gutsy”.
Jimmy Fallon had the pair play “Mother Daughter Challenge”, with each taking turns to wear a pair of noise-cancelling headphones and guess what the other person had said.

Apple revealed on Friday the streaming release dates for original films “Causeway,” starring Jennifer Lawrence, and the documentary “Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues.” Both films are due to premiere at Toronto International Film Festival next week.
The A24-produced “Causeway” debuts Nov. 4 on Apple TV+. Lawrence produces and stars as a veteran grappling with a difficult transition from her time in the military to life at home in New Orleans. Directed by Lila Neugebauer in her feature debut, the film will screen at TIFF on Sept. 10 as a Special Presentation at Royal Alexandra Theatre.
“Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues,” described as the “definitive” documentary about the founding father of jazz, streams Oct. 28. Featuring archival footage and never-before-heard home recordings and personal conversations, Sacha Jenkins’ film will take an intimate look at his life and legacy. It’s set to open TIFF’s Documentary Section at the TIFF Bell Lightbox on Sept.

Taylor Swift is about to become the hottest ticket at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
The singer and songwriting star will appear in conversation with TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey and introduce her short film, “All Too Well,” at the annual celebration of movies. “In Conversation With… Taylor Swift” will take place on Friday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. at TIFF Bell Lightbox, so start lining up now (only kind of joking). The event will mark the first-ever screening of “All Too Well” on 35mm.
“We love the intersection of film and other art forms, and Taylor Swift is a brilliant visual thinker,” said Bailey. “We’re excited to hear Taylor’s version of how absorbing influences from cinema led to her creating ‘All Too Well: The Short Film.'”

Venice Film Festival watchers and political obsessives got a treat Wednesday night, when former U.S. Secretary of State and 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton was spotted at the opening night gala for the 79th edition of the festival.
Clinton walked the Venice red carpet and took in the opening night festivities, including the world premiere of Noah Baumbach’s White Noise, starring Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig, which kicked off the 2022 festival.
But just why was Clinton there? There was speculation of a Netflix connection. The streamer produced Baumbach’s new film and is backing In Her Hands, the first documentary from Hillary and Chelsea Clinton’s new production company HiddenLight Productions. The doc, from Tamana Ayazi (Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl)) and Marcel Mettelsiefen (Watani: My Homeland) will have its world premiere at the Toronto...
