The biggest challenge in filming Peacock’s dark comedy thriller Based on a True Story? Getting stars Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina to stop laughing in between takes.
“They’re so funny together,” director and executive producer Alexander Buono told The Hollywood Reporter at the show’s Thursday night premiere. “Honestly, the hardest thing was to get them to stop laughing so we could shoot the scene. My role to direct them was often [that I had to] be the wet blanket.”
“We drove people crazy,” Cuoco agrees. “We laughed all the time. We were the duo that we didn’t even know that we needed. He’s hysterical, he’s kind, he’s fun and also just a wonderful person on set. He takes care of everyone, we both do. It’s important to us and it was a great match.”

Annabel Verbeke’s amiable film peregrinates around the question of cultural identity on the border between Northern Ireland and Ireland
‘Brexit, Brexit, Brexit. 24/7,” bemoans one young Northern Irish man to his mates. “If it comes on [TV], I just go on my phone.” Annabel Verbeke’s piece of amiable, breeze-shooting psychogeography whiles away a few afternoons on and around the Carlingford Lough ferry, which crosses the invisible Ireland-Northern Ireland border. Anxieties about the possibility of a hard border raise the spectre of old enmities, but the general excitement over spotting one frontier-oblivious local – Finn the dolphin – shows there is no sectarian divide a few aquatic somersaults can’t cross.
Amid the various day-trippers, kite-flyers, golfers, BMX bandits, farmers, hearse drivers and other punters eavesdropped on by Verbeke, you get the impression that she herself may think borders are arbitrary and meaningless. As a group of Asian tourists comment, borders obscure the similarities,...

Carl Olsson’s discreet documentary is an unfailingly human look at the funeral industry and those who work continually surrounded by mortality
This discreet yet gently ironic Swedish documentary encourages us to look at the bright side of death; that is, the attentive preparations for those passing, and the miraculous persistence of earthly matters around them. It’s shot in what you might call the European objective style, reminiscent of Ulrich Seidl and Nikolaus Geyrhalter: largely static, square-on tableaux of activity in morgues, crematoriums, cemeteries, hearses and the like. But they’re filled with small talk that attests to the unstoppable flow of life, even in these most sombre of places.
The dead are conspicuous by their absence; shrouded in the back of a hearse or occasionally glimpsed hands as a mortician works on them. But a whole army from the funeral industry are at their disposal: embalmers, grave and urn diggers,...

"You People" is the latest comedy to take over Netflix. The movie - which features the star-studded cast of Jonah Hill, Lauren London, Eddie Murphy, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus - is about a young couple named Amira and Ezra who want to get married but are hoping to get their parents' approval first. Since they come from two very different backgrounds, that's easier said than done.
If you've already watched the film, you probably recognize London from movies like "Atl," "I Love You, Beth Cooper," "This Christmas," and, more recently, "Without Remorse." Her TV credits also include shows like "The Game," "Games People Play," and "True Story."
Outside of her acting career, London prefers to keep her personal life private, though she has been in a few public relationships over the years. Since entering the spotlight in the early 2000s, she's dated some famous musicians, with her most recent relationship being with the late Nipsey Hussle.

There’s good and bad news on the “Outer Range” front, Prime Video’s excellent, Western/metaphysical sci-fi show starring Josh Brolin, Imogen Poots, and an outstanding supporting cast. The good news: the critically acclaimed “The Outer Range”—which we adored, it’s one of the best shows of the year—but the bad news is that its original showrunner and creator Brian Watkins has been replaced. Instead, Charles Murray, who has an overall deal with Amazon Studios, will come aboard as showrunner and executive producer for season two.

One problem with being The New York Times—big, lumbering, important—is that you sometimes get in your own way. It happens even when you cover the movies. Every now and then, you find yourself looking at a picture that’s looking at you. And that can be awkward.
Just such a moment is pending, as The Times prepares to deal with She Said, Maria Schrader’s film about the Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation of Harvey Weinstein and sex abuse by two of its reporters, Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey.
That was a proud enterprise for the paper, the kind of reporting it’s supposed to do. But past triumph won’t make it any easier for the Times‘ critics and cultural reporters to cover the film when Universal unveils it at the New York Film Festival on Oct. 13, at a world premiere that will find their two colleagues on-stage with the actresses who portray them,...

Based on the remarkable true story of Syrian sisters Yusra and Sarah Mardini, "The Swimmers" is a stylish feature film that packs an emotional punch. Directed and co-written by Sally El Hosaini (best known for "My Brother the Devil"), the Netflix movie kicked off the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival — and set the tone for what's sure to be exciting week. This larger-than life movie is a crowd-pleaser.
Alternating between exuberant and exhilarating, heart-warming and horrific, "The Swimmers" is an ambitious picture that tells an almost unbelievable tale of struggle, perseverance, and triumph. Life in Syria changed very drastically in 2011; the film shows sisters Yusra and Sarah Mardini (played by real-life sisters Nathalie and Manal Issa) enjoying a happy, carefree life when the rumblings of civil war first appeared. Four years later, the family's life has been turned upside-down, thanks to the violence overtaking the nation.
"The Swimmers" is drenched (excuse the pun) in feeling.

Kevin Hart is once again taking some inspiration from his own life for his latest series, “True to Size.”
The comedian is developing the half-hour comedy for Peacock with Dan Levy, who will write and showrun. Here’s the premise for the series:
Before Kevin Hart was the biggest comedian in the world, before his movies grossed over a billion dollars, and before he was a mogul, he was a lost 20-year-old in Philly working at a sneaker shop in a 90s mall — a job he didn’t really want and only took to make his mom happy and keep him out of trouble. However this job would eventually change his life forever when the store manager convinces him to try stand up at an open mic.

Exclusive: Before Kevin Hart was a top comedian, a global movie star and a media mogul, he was a lost 20-year-old in Philly working at a sneaker shop in a 90s mall. That early chapter in Hart’s life is the inspiration for True To Size, a half-hour single camera comedy, which, in a competitive situation, has landed at Peacock for development. The project hails from stand-up comedian and writer Dan Levy (The Goldbergs), Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat Productions, Doug Robinson and Sony Pictures Television, where Robinson and his Drp Productions are based.
Hart has spoken openly about his stint as a sneaker salesman, which he took very seriously at the time and strived to be the best at despite only taking the job to make his mom happy and keep him out of trouble. The gig would eventually change his life when the store manager convinced him to try standup at an open mic.

Kyle Buchanan’s new authorised account of Mad Max: Fury Road is a detailed illustration of a challenging shoot. The author of an unauthorised tribute to the franchise reflects on another side to George Miller’s world
There are countless talking points in the new oral history of Mad Max: Fury Road. As well as Tom Hardy v Charlize Theron, we hear accounts of everything from the writing process to stunts, on-set challenges and the battle faced by the softly spoken Australian auteur George Miller to get Warner Bros to release his film in an untampered state.
“Talking points” is a salient phrase. The format of Kyle Buchanan’s book, Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road, reduces the journalist’s voice to let subjects speak for themselves. This approach has obvious appeal for talent, whose views aren’t diluted by the writer’s.
