- Charlie was raised to know where the edge was and how to bet it. She quickly discovers her knack for picking the right side of games. All is going well, until her estranged, terminally ill, degenerate father attempts to reconnect.
- Charlie's father is a risk taker, a gambler, a sports bettor, but, to her, he's a complete degenerate. From an early age, Charlie was raised to know which side of a game had value, where the edge was, and how to bet it. Her father taught her well, but after a series of tragic events sending him on full tilt, Charlie is forced to spend her teen years living with her grandparents. During those years, the relationship between them grows further and further apart until it's non-existent.
In college, Charlie discovers that she has a knack for picking the right side of a game. At first, it's low-level bets with frat guys, but it quickly becomes a side gig, then a full-time business. After a run of bad luck and a few bad beats, she goes into a tailspin, where she is forced to confront the demons of her past, and ultimately falls victim to the gambling gods.
Six months later, back on her feet, she re-enrolls in college and is more focused than ever on the life she wants for herself. That is, until her father comes crawling to her, desperate and in need. He's broke again and worse, he's terminally ill. Begging for Charlie to help him, she begrudgingly relents and offers a solution to his problems. In order to get the money required for his medical treatment, they will need to go on a gambling run like never before. They set out on their mission with a clear directive, but end up discovering more about each other than they could have ever imagined. Their trip through the heart of the South culminates at a dog track just outside of Jacksonville, Fl.
