Before you make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Comedy Supporting Actress, take a look through our photo gallery featuring the ladies most likely to land in the lineup. Since last year’s winner – Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”) – is now campaigning as a lead, this race is wide open to an array of possible newcomers, past contenders, and even a few former winners.
At this point, the clear frontrunner is potential category first-timer Meryl Streep (“Only Murders in the Building”), who previously achieved two Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress wins for “Holocaust” (1978) and “Angels in America” (2004). Hoping to challenge her are three of Edebiri’s “The Bear” cast mates: Liza Colon-Zayas, Abby Elliott, and Molly Gordon.
Of Edebiri’s six 2023 competitors, only two – “Abbott Elementary” pair Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph – are involved in the current race. Ralph took this prize for the same series in 2022, defeating Hannah Einbinder...

Candace Bushnell is not creatively attached to And Just Like That…, the Sex and the City reboot. She still has plenty of opinions on Carrie Bradshaw’s love life, though. In a recent interview, Bushnell confidently asserted that Carrie Bradshaw probably could have been pretty happy with how her life would have turned out if she had married Aidan Shaw. The statement starkly contrasts Bushnell’s thoughts on the subject just a year ago.
Candace Bushnell thinks Carrie and Aidan could have been happy together
Candace Bushnell has seemingly changed her stance on Carrie Bradshaw’s love life. As the author of Sex and the City and the inspiration for Carrie Bradshaw, no one would know better who the quirky sex columnist belonged with, yet she remains unsure. In 2023, the famed author took to X to reveal that she didn’t think either one of Carrie’s “big loves” was the right fit for her.

Sex and the City has found new life among an entirely new demographic of viewers. After the iconic series appeared on Netflix on April 1, subscribers took to binging the series. While there has been plenty of discussion about Carrie Bradshaw and her pals’ sex lives, it’s important to remember the entire series was based on a very real sex column that ran in a New York City newspaper back in the 1990s. Candace Bushnell created Carrie Bradshaw as an alter ego. While many parts of Carrie’s life mimic Bushnell’s New York City dating experience, plenty of creative changes were made. Do you know what paper Bushnell’s column ran in?
What newspaper ran the original ‘Sex and the City’ column?
Carrie Bradshaw famously made a living writing about her own dating experience and the sexual exploits of her friends Charlotte York, Miranda Hobbes, and Samantha Jones. Carrie...

Cynthia Nixon is detailing a scrapped Sex and the City scene that was shot similarly to Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 horror film Psycho.
The actress, who reprised her role as Miranda for And Just Like That, a revival of the hit series, shared on the latest episode of the Dinner’s on Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson podcast why the episode ultimately had to be reshot.
“[It’s] in that episode where Miranda’s not having sex but she’s eating a lot of chocolate cake and she tries to buy a whole cake and it’s like $80 and she’s like, ‘This is ridiculous. I’m not going to spend $80,’” Nixon said of the scene. “So she goes and buys like a Duncan Hines mix and makes herself a cake. And then she can’t stop eating it. Sex and the City was a smash hit for HBO. Premiering in 1998, the series ran for six seasons, spawned two movies (although we'd prefer to forget that the second one ever came out), and a prequel series (The Carrie Diaries on The CW).
And while there was great excitement over And Just Like That..., the reboot was somewhat marred from the outset with the harassment allegations against Chris Noth, the lack of Samantha (Kim Cattrall), and the introduction of the polarizing Che Diaz.
The series has expanded its circle of friends from the original, bringing in Seema, Nya, and Lisa as foils and sidekicks for Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte, respectively.
Long-time fans enjoyed seeing Anthony find a new partner and learning more about Stanford's life in Japan. Season 2 of And Just Like That... also saw much growth from our leading ladies.
Carrie found and then lost Aidan, at least for the time being.

The “Netflix and chill” generation has just been confronted with, well, “Sex.”
“Sex and the City,” which wrapped up its six-season run on HBO in 2004, has arrived on the streaming platform, and is currently ranked at No. 7 in the Netflix Top 10.
Netflix’s firehose of viewers represents something different for Carrie Bradshaw and the gang. Though “Sex and the City,” one of the class of early shows that led the pay-cable revolution, is utterly entwined with HBO’s brand, it’s also broken out before, in cut-for-basic-cable reruns on E! and two theatrically released feature films. But the sheer magnitude of potential viewership on Netflix, and “Sex and the City’s” coexistence there with such an undifferentiated mass of content, strips away the context in which the four fashionable Manhattanites have to this point existed.
Which presents both an exciting twist in the miraculously long life of this work of popular art,...

Ah, April. Spring isn’t just in the air, it’s on our television sets. Baseballs are zipping through the air. Flowers are blooming in the park. Desperate TV networks are capitalizing off national holidays with religious programming. It’s all happening, and Netflix is playing along. Not only did the streaming giant get an early jump on the Emmy race by launching the confusing awful ambitious “3 Body Problem” in March (giving voters enough time to wade through its arduous episodes), but April has its own awards contender in “Ripley.”
I would be surprised if any other April original series draw the TV Academy’s attention, but we should never write off a series executive produced by Norman Lear (“Good Times” gets the animated reboot treatment this month), nor can a nature documentary series from Netflix be considered out of the running. Greg Berlanti isn’t known for producing...

This post was originally published in July 2023. We’ve updated it to coincide with “Sex and the City” coming to Netflix April 1.
Seasons change, and so do cities. One thing that doesn’t? Fans’ enduring love for “Sex and the City,” the HBO comedy that premiered in 1998.
Endlessly spoofed but also deeply, earnestly loved by millions (there are honestly very fun location tours in NYC running several times a week) the groundbreaking series wrapped its original six-season, 94-episode run in 2004, with a not-terrible, not-great 2008 feature film and a truly terrible sequel following in 2010. In 2021, spinoff series “And Just Like That” — without Kim Cattrall’s iconic Samantha Jones — premiered on Max (née HBO Max). A second season of “And Just Like That” began airing in June 2023, following the misadventures of a 50-something Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda. On Monday, the news broke all over the web that Sara Ramirez had exited And Just Like That... ahead of the third season of the Max hit series, taking Che Diaz with her. While we appreciate Ramirez, we can't say the same for Che.
So it's no surprise that reactions were, to say the least, quite positive.
Che, seen throughout the first two seasons, was extremely polarizing.
While Che's introduction led Miranda to experience her sexual awakening, it also led to Miranda's downfall as an independent, strong-willed lawyer. It turned her into someone she would have mocked on Sex and the City.
However, the And Just Like That... Season 2 finale gave us a glimpse into what will hopefully be the new Miranda.
With a new job with Human Rights Watch, a rekindled friendship with Steve, and the knowledge that she will no longer be Che's comedic fodder, there is a...

Sara Ramírez will not be returning to the third season of And Just Like That, according to Variety and Deadline.
Ramirez, who uses they/them pronouns, played nonbinary standup comedian Che Diaz and was introduced as Miranda Hobbs’ (Cynthia Nixon) love interest in season one. By season two, however, the fictional couple had called it quits.
In response to criticism of her character, Ramirez took to Instagram last summer to address the online comments. “I am not the fictional characters I have played, nor am I responsible for the things...

Che Diaz is moving out of And Just Like That.
Sara Ramírez, the star who has played the controversial character on Max’s Sex and the City offshoot for its first two seasons, will not return for the upcoming third season of the series. Sources caution that while scripts are still being written, there’s always a potential for Ramírez to pop in for an episode.
The internet has speculated for weeks that Ramírez, who previously played Grey’s Anatomy fan-favorite Callie Torres, would not be returning for Ajlt’s upcoming season following a string of posts on their social media. A month ago, Ramírez shared a post in which they seemed to allege that Ajlt introduced Che — the franchise’s first nonbinary character — as a way not to be inclusive but rather as “performative” lip service toward the LGBTQIA2S+ community.

Looks like the internet won’t have Che Diaz to kick around anymore. According to multiple sources, Sara Ramírez won’t be returning to “And Just Like That” for its third season, which starts production later this year for a 2025 premiere on Max.
Ramírez has played nonbinary standup comedian Che Diaz since Season 1, during which the character became a meme-generating object of mockery. In a cover story interview for Variety‘s Pride issue in June 2022, Ramírez said they had tried to avoid the online commentary. “Other people’s opinions of a character — that’s not something I can allow into my process,” they said. “I choose what I receive, right? That’s the beauty of being grown — I don’t have to receive everything!”

Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell revealed this week she will not receive royalties from Netflix amid the show’s freshly announced move to the streamer.
“The way men do business is a ponzi scheme,” Bushnell told The Sunday Times.
Bushnell published her first “Sex and the City” column in The New York Observer in 1994. She told the Times this week that she was paid $100,000 for the screen rights to HBO’s Sex and the City in the ’90s, which eventually ran for six seasons from 1998 to 2004 and later spanned two movies and the spinoff series, And Just Like That (currently in production on its third season).

And just like that, "Sex and the City" is being licensed to Netflix by Warner Bros. Discovery, parent company of HBO and the owner of its own streaming service, Max. The ground-breaking series about 30-something single women struggling to find love and happiness in '90s New York is finally making its way to the streaming platform that started it all in early April of 2024.
The licensing deal includes all six seasons of the series, but it does not include the two feature films or the spin-off series "And Just Like That..." which streams exclusively on Max. The original show will stream on Netflix only in the U.S. and several European countries, per Variety. "Sex and the City" originally aired from 1998-2004, starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, and Kim Cattrall. Sara Ramirez, who plays Che Diaz on the popular HBO series And Just Like That, has been dropped by executives – but the reason remains mysterious.
Ramirez, a non-binary actor, rose to fame with their role in Grey’s Anatomy. Ramirez posted on their Instagram on Tuesday confirming that they would not be returning to the show.
Ramirez claimed that the dropping of the character was due to their political stances and pro-Palestinian opinions, saying, “casting directors and agents are making black lists of actors and workers who post anything in support of Palestinians and Gaza to ensure they will not work again.”
Fans of the show, however, have been divided on Che for a while, with many seeing the role as “annoying” and “a waste of airtime.”
Last season was notable for the return of Kim Cattrall to the series – if only for one minute – for which she was reportedly paid $1 million.

And just like that, one of HBO’s most iconic hits is heading over to its biggest streaming rival.
All six seasons of the Emmy-winning comedy Sex and the City are going to stream on Netflix for the first time. The show will reportedly be added to the platform in April as a co-exclusive with Max (so Satc will still be available on HBO’s streaming service as well).
The licensing deal is part of a content agreement that HBO parent company Warner Bros. Discovery made with Netflix last July, but Satc was not originally announced as part of that package.

Max is turning off the heat on Julia.
The Warner Bros. Discovery-backed streamer has canceled its Julia Child-inspired series Julia following a two-season run. The news comes after the second season wrapped its run Dec. 21 and amid an era of belt tightening across the television landscape, with Julia joining Our Flag Means Death in being axed at the streamer this week alone. Both seasons of Julia will continue to be available to stream on Max.
From creator Daniel Goldfarb and showrunner Chris Keyser, Sarah Lancashire starred as Child opposite David Hyde Pierce. Max did not own the show and instead paid a licensing fee to producers Lionsgate Television, which is in the midst of spinning off from premium cable network Starz.
“We are so honored to have partnered with Chris Keyser, Daniel Goldfarb and their masterful creative team and dynamic cast, led by Sarah Lancashire, as they cooked up Julia.

“Isn’t it fabulous?!”
It’s an unseasonably warm fall afternoon in New York City, and Keli Goff is walking THR through the pieces in her “cl-office,” a unit in her Manhattan apartment building that she has fashioned into a combined closet and office. An unscripted dating show based on author Candace Bushnell’s “Sex and the City” book is in development at Bunim/Murray Productions, Variety has confirmed.
Titled “Is There Still Sex in The City,” the program will follow four friends in their fifties as they navigate the immersive dating experience in a “love do-over” where they trade in their busy city lives for a “dating utopia.” “They’ll live together in a cozy country chateau where they’ll have their pick of a different group of men in each episode. They’ll try the boy toys, sample a senior age player, be romanced by the rich guys and even get to flirt with their fantasy man. But in the end, who will really steal their hearts, and will our ladies be able to bring the sex back to the city?” reads the logline.

John Oliver locked in on an unexpected target during the latest episode of “Last Week Tonight”: Apple TV+.
Sunday’s episode of HBO’s late night series revolved around the working conditions of dollar stores. As Oliver covered, these stores are often understaffed to the point of only having one or two employees working at a time – and the employees that do work are underpaid and not given adequate support. One employee detailed how, after an armed robbery of her store, her district manager’s second question was about how soon the employee could reopen the store.
“That is ridiculous. An armed robbery is a traumatic event that people need time to recover from,” Oliver said. “It’s not something you can just ignore like a spam call or a broken lightbulb or any show on Apple TV.”

It was a busy week for Colin Jost and Michael Che as they joked on Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” about everything in politics and pop culture.
The big news right now is media and tech companies pulling their ad dollars from X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, after advertisements started appearing next to anti-semitic posts.
“Which is a huge relief because I was definitely worried about where this was going to end up,” Jost quipped.
An image of Jost making a thumbs-up appeared on-screen with the SNL “Weekend Update” anchor smiling gleefully.

Later on in the segment, Jost took on the news that Rupert Murdoch was stepping down as CEO of Fox News parent Fox and News Corp, joking that he passed “the position to his son, Darth Murdoch.” Jost made a reference to the villain Darth Vader of Star Wars.

Warner Bros. Discovery shed more streaming subscribers in Max’s first full quarter of existence: July-September 2023. The company lost 700,000 streaming subs in the quarter, it reported on Wednesday; Max and Discovery+ now combine for 95.1 million streaming subscribers.
Wbd’s streaming business was able to turn a profit in the third quarter — just like it did at the beginning of the year. Adjusted Ebitda at direct-to-consumer was $111 million. The same segment lost money in Q2, but surprised with positive Ebitda in Q1, which is also the last time Wbd grew its streaming-subscriber base.
The loss of subs in the past two quarters is not really unexpected. Max, which launched on May 23, is a combination of the former HBO Max and Discovery+. While Discovery+ remains available as a standalone platform, it is now pretty redundant for folks who had previously subscribed to both of the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming services.
