Gospel Comes To Town
Sister Lucinda Tharpe offers a version of the title song with Lucky Millinder's band backing her, as well as several scantily clad chorines in this soundie.
Soundies were short films, usually about three minutes in length, meant to be played on a machine called the Mills Panaran. These devices could be found in bars, diners, night clubs, and other places where a jukebox might be found. For a dime you got not only the song, but the short movie. From 1940 through 1946, Mills and other companies produced more than 2000 soundies.
Miss Tharpe's use of gospel technique in popular singing was considered shocking by the religious communities, who viewed it as sacred music. However, it was vastly influential on rhythm & blues and early rock & roll performers.
