Open social media on any given Thursday night as of late, and you’ve probably seen a message that reads something like “If you’re not watching #TheTraitors wtf are you actually doing.”
The Peacock series, which premiered in January and airs every Thursday night, has become an addictive guilty pleasure, earning the number one spot among unscripted streaming series and turning out endlessly quotable one-liners and internet memes on a weekly basis.
The global franchise originated with the Dutch show De Verraders in 2021. A year later, The Traitors was adapted for a U.

The Traitors has been one of the few bright spots in the unscripted world in recent years, becoming a smash hit for the BBC and Peacock’s most watched unscripted original of all time.
As such, the NBCUniversal streamer has ordered a third season of the mystery game.
It comes as the second season of the Alan Cumming-hosted series is mid-run, having launched in January.
The psychological series is all about treachery and deceit. It sees a group of reality stars and famous faces play a murder mystery game in a castle in the Scottish Highlands. The group must work together on a series of missions to build a prize fund worth up to $250,000. Hidden amongst the Faithful are the Traitors, whose goal is to eliminate the Faithful and claim the prize for themselves. A 20-year-old BBC gameshow that bears striking resemblance to smash hit The Traitors has emerged online.
Yesterday, the Back the BBC Twitter account posted a YouTube video of a BBC series from 2004 titled Traitor, hosted by presenter Tony Livesey, in which contestants sit in a circle and try and figure out who the dishonest ‘traitors’ are to win a cash prize.
The BBC and Idtv, the Dutch producer of recent smash hit The Traitors, were taken by surprise by the emergence of this 20-year-old gameshow.
Traitor aired several episodes on the BBC in 2004. One of the former contestants, Pete Liggins, commented on X that the show was being considered as a replacement for The Weakest Link in the late afternoon slot but “I guess cost too much/was too complicated a production in comparison.”

[Editor’s Note: this story contains minor spoilers for “The Traitors” Season 2, now streaming on Peacock. It also spoils the end of “The Traitors” Season 1.]
Given its struggles to find an audience, Peacock managing to get a successful show of any kind is a minor miracle in itself. But the NBCUniversal Media Group service has found its most recent success intruding on the market Netflix dominates streaming-wise: reality TV.
On January 26, it was reported that “The Traitors,” a structured competition show on Peacock, will almost certainly hit the Nielsen streaming top 10 rankings for the week of January 15-21, when its second season premiered. Viewers watched 384 million minutes of the show during the seven-day time frame, including all of the show’s first season and the first four episodes of the second. Peacock reported that the show’s audience grew by 75 percent compared to its first season — a massive rise that’s unsurprising if you’ve been paying attention.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from the first four episodes of “The Traitors,” now streaming on Peacock.
Ever since both the BBC and Peacock adapted the Dutch series “De Verraders” into “The Traitors,” it’s been a hit. Both produced by Studio Lambert, the U.K. version premiered on the BBC in November 2022, with the U.S. version dropping on the NBCUniversal streamer Peacock less than two months later.
After the first season mixed non-famous cast members with celebrities, the second season of the U.S. version is now solely familiar faces. The concept remains the same: contestants must work together on missions to fill their prize pot with up to $250,000. Several “Traitors” are selected by host Alan Cumming at the start of the game, and the rest of the contestants are called the “Faithful.” The Faithful must try to identify who among them is a Traitor, banishing one...

The Traitors, which became the BBC’s biggest rating entertainment show in five years on its debut in 2022, will return for a second season in early 2024 and, in a sign of the BBC’s confidence in the format, be accompanied by a spin-off show.
While the main second season will air on BBC One, The Traitors: Uncloaked will air on BBC Two and the BBC’s digital platform, iPlayer. In it, players eliminated from the show will discover the identities of the traitors who got rid of them.
The BBC reports that the show will contain interviews with the eliminated contestants and also unseen footage.
Ed Gamble will host the show, which will also be available as a podcast. Claudia Winkleman – who also hosts the BBC’s biggest entertainment show Strictly Come Dancing – will be back on duty as the host of the second season of the main show.

The positive response to the Dutch reality series De Verraders has brought different versions of The Traitors to many countries, but executive producer Toni Ireland says the biggest challenge for her was to ensure that the U.S. production stood out in the crowd. Peacock’s The Traitors brings together a group of everyday people and reality TV stars in an elaborate murder-mystery competition hosted by Alan Cumming. Perhaps the biggest change in the U.S. series was in how the game ended, which led to a shocking finale where the group needed to unanimously decide to either trust their fellow finalists and split the money or call for another elimination vote if they believe a traitor is still among them.
‘The Traitors’
Deadline: What has the response been like for the series in the U.S.?
Toni Ireland: Oh, it’s been fantastic. It’s been great. The first series are always tricky,...

Gold Derby caught up with Alan Cumming, the host and producer of “The Traitors,” as he walked the red carpet on Thursday, May 18 at the NBCU FYC House at The Aster in Hollywood. Based on the Dutch program “De Verraders,” which Cumming was “completely obsessed by,” the Peacock version welcomes reality TV stars and everyday people and tasks some of them with being “traitors” and others with being “faithfuls” (those who try to uncover the villains’ identities). Watch our red carpet interview above.
During the 10-episode series, Cumming always looks fabulous as he wears extravagant suits and capes. Was the wardrobe a part of the reason the award-winning actor signed on for “The Traitors”? “I didn’t know the wardrobe when I said I would do it, so that was an added bonus,” he tells me.

“The Traitors,” the reality game show that sees contestants holed up in a castle working to eliminate one another in order to claim a grand prize, became one of last winter’s break-out hits when it dropped on BBC One.
But it nearly didn’t get commissioned. Syeda Irtizaali, BBC editor for unscripted, revealed when someone first suggested she take a look at the Dutch version (titled “De Verraders” and repped by All3Media International) she wasn’t convinced. “I think it’s a pretty difficult show to sell on paper,” Irtizaali said during a panel discussion about the format at MipTV on Tuesday morning. She said it was a contact at NBC (with whom the BBC has a creative partnership) that told her about it, saying. “’There’s people being murdered, they’re wearing hoodies. Watch it, I think you’ll like it.’”
“I was like, ‘No,’” Irtizaali laughed. “So for a while,...

The UK owes many of its proudest creations to other countries. Our national dish is chicken tikka masala, the Romans gave us everything from plumbing to underfloor heating, and let’s not even get started on the Royal family.
So it should come as no surprise that some top UK TV shows are based on original series from around the world. Some of these are obvious, like Drag Race UK and Law & Order being imported from the US, or The Masked Singer originating in South Korea, but some UK remakes are less up front about their international origins.
Hullraisers
Lucy Beaumont developed this Hull-based sitcom about the lives of three hilarious, bawdy and chaotic women, which debuted on Channel 4 in spring 2022 and has already been commissioned for a second series. But despite being a gorgeous and all-too-rare depiction of working-class British wit, Hullraisers is actually based on an Israeli sitcom called Little Mom,...

It was also the biggest new series for young audiences in 2022 and the BBC’s highest-rated new entertainment show for young viewers since 2017.
It will come as little surprise then that The Traitors has been renewed for a second outing. Applications to participate in the new season are now open.
Hosted by Claudia Winkleman, the series is a psychological reality competition which sees 22 strangers play “the ultimate game of detection, backstabbing, and trust” in the hope of winning up to £120,000.
