Markham Street Films is excited to announce that rising stars Devery Jacobs ("Rhymes for Young Ghouls") and Imogen Waterhouse ("Nocturnal Animals"), are on board to star in "Level 16," the new Young Adult thriller from the Toronto-based production company. Devery and Imogen will join Sara Canning ("The Vampire Diaries, ""War for the Planet of the Apes"), who is on board to play Ms. Brixil, the head of The Vestalis Academy, the boarding school at the center of the film. "Level 16" will start production this summer with screenplay and direction by Danishka Esterhazy ("Black Field").
“Devery and Imogen are my dream cast for 'Level 16'”, said Esterhazy. “They are intelligent and deeply talented young actors. Passionate and professional. Each has her own unique style and I can’t wait to see them work together as they bring to life our lead characters Vivien and Sophia. "
Devery Jacobs plays 16 year old Vivien, trapped in The Vestalis Academy, a prison like boarding school, keeping to herself and sticking her head out for no one. Until she is reunited with Sophia, played by Imogen Waterhouse, the former friend who betrayed her. Together the girls embark on a dangerous search to uncover the horrifying truth behind their imprisonment. Soon running for their lives, the girls must save themselves or die trying.
Director Danishka Esterhazy has received acclaim for her visually stunning and female-driven films. She is a graduate of the National Screen Institute and the Canadian Film Center. Her debut feature, "Black Field," won the Best Feature Drama award at Vancouver’s Women in Film Festival and the Best Canadian Feature award at Toronto’s Female Eye Film Festival.
Launched in February of 2002, award-winning Markham Street Films Inc., created by Judy Holm and Michael McNamara, makes film and video projects for all media.
Markham Street Films producer Judy Holm will attend the Berlinale from Feb 11 – 17.

A number of years ago, short film director Danishka Esterhazy made a splash with her feature film debut, the low key period drama Black Field. A story of two sisters living alone on a farm, the film was not only an interesting family drama but a really dark, gritty thriller. For her follow-up, Esterhazy has not strayed far from her debut, this time adapting the familiar story of Hansel and Gretel into a family drama that is even darker in theme than her first film.

The DVD and theatrical releases of the horror and thriller films by Karen Lam, Danishka Esterhazy, Barbara Stepansky, and Susan Jacobson, respectively, are all released, like, now.
Kierston Wareing in Susan Jacobson's "The Holding"
Karen Lam's Stained is now on iTunes, Amazon, and can be bought at Barnes & Noble on DVD in Canada and the United States! Stained is about a reclusive book store owner, played by Tinsel Corey of Twilight fame, who begins to unravel when she gets back together with her abusive boyfriend. Karen Lam is a really great director; her short film Doll Parts is a selection of the Viscera 2011 Film Festival.
Danishka Esterhazy's Black Field, a gothic thriller (think "Wuthering Heights"), is being released this weekend of September 10th at the Toronto International Film Festival! It's also airing on Canada's Superchannel in October and can be purchased directly (in Canada only) through Century Street.

I’m not quite sure what they’re putting in the water in Greece but there’s definitely something going on. The country has never really been at the forefront of filmmaking but over the last year, there have been an assortment of excellent titles coming out of the Balkan Peninsula.
First there’s Vardis Marinakis’ Black Field (check out our preview and interview with Marinakis) Giorgos Lanthimos’ Dogtooth (review) and yesterday we got word of Athina Rachel Tsangari's Attenberg. Today we have Yiannis Economidis’s Mahairovgaltis.
It’s the story of Nick, a man who lives in the country; a man who lives for the here and now. When his father dies, he’s urged to leave small town life behind and head to Athens where his uncle offers him food, board and an easy job but Nick's life takes a sharp turn once he arrives in the metropolis.

Until women reach a 50-50 parity with men directors, my mission continues to count the women directors in upcoming and recent film festivals (and an occasional informal glance at what’s selling in the markets). Women’s films in Berlin reflect women’s place in the world both in content and in the numbers of women represented as directors, producers, writers, etc. John Cooper of Sundance stresses the increasing and possibly 50-50 parity of women producers, but I am looking at the directors. As March is Women’s History Month (and all the other months are Men’s History Month according to Gloria Steinem’s L.A. Times Article of March 4, 2010) this blog is in honor of all women everywhere.
