Kirby Ferguson’s epic and informative web serial, Everything is a Remix, comes to an inspiring conclusion with part four, to my mind the best of the series. In “Part Four: System Failures,” he looks at the historical roots of copyright and patent protection and examines how today’s system has drifted so far away from the original goals of furthering the public good while still protecting creators. I can’t recommend Ferguson’s series more highly, and if you find yourself in an argument with someone about legislations like Sopa, PiPA and Acta, point them towards these videos for a succinctly argued treatise on intellectual property in the age of the internet.

Los Angeles may be considered the film capital of the world, but what is “film” these days anyway? A new L.A-based festival has just popped up that addresses and celebrates all of the unique forms that visual storytelling can take in our new media world.
The inaugural New Media Film Festival will run the course of one weekend, June 11-13, at the Downtown Independent theater and show a mix of Internet-based short films, “webisodes,” documentaries that deal with the way media influences and is influenced by real world affairs and feature films in which new media figures as a major story element.
While the festival is strictly concerned with new media, I do want to note that there is a slight “underground” connection. While the fest was founded by Susan Johnston, the event’s Artistic Director is David Kleiler, who founded the Boston Underground Film Festival way back in 1998. Plus,...

Yesterday, the Genie Awards, Canada's equivalent of the Oscars for those who don't know, were handed out. This year, Polytechnique dominated the Genie Awards and even took the award for Best Motion Picture. However, the presentation of the award on TV and on webcast was too short. Besides, it wasn't a live presentation and not all the awards were shows on TV/webcast. Second Besides: When will a TV network (and not some cable network that few Canadians have) broadcast the Genie Awards? Anyway, without further ado, here's the presentation of the winners.

Documentarians carve stories out of the ebb and flow of real life, making the struggles of a Canadian metal band into a rousing tale of standing by your dreams, or finding echoes of "A Chorus Line" in the backstage process of putting together a Broadway revival of the show. So it's no surprise that the 2010 Cinema Eye Honors, which took place on Friday in New York, were filled with their own anecdotes about nonfiction films and the process of making them.

Our sister company IFC Films will have quite the busy summer, providing at least one film a week to watch on demand and nowhere else. The company's Festival Direct summer schedule recently kicked off with the Robert Pattinson teen drama "How to Be," and will be followed on May 6th by the premieres of Pablo Proenza's haunted house thriller "Dark Mirror" and the Patrick Wilson-Amy Smart romantic dramedy "Life In Flight," which premiered at last year's Tribeca Film Festival.

For a market that is supposed to be flat, there are a number of U.S. film acquisitions made in the month of March, not to mention February. If there's no money, are these companies acquiring them for no mgs? The films are also holding up surprisingly well in theaters which bodes well for future sales of independent films into the coming year. Rumblings from venture capital waiting in the wings to begin investing again are also heard. I predict 2010 will be the year of the turnaround when the buying cycle begins again. Meanwhile there are some bargains to be had. Also notable are the key festivals where these films have all shown.
Amreeka was acquired by National Geographic and will open New Directors/ New Films. It showed as a work in progress at the Dubai Film Festival and went from there to its world premiere at Sundance. William Morris Independent brokered the deal on behalf of E1 Entertainment which has acquired Charlotte Mickie's and Robert Lantos' Maximum as well as U.K. distribtution company Contender all of which are very notable moves in the industry.
Afghan Star which showed at IDFA went to ZeitgeistZeitgeist[/link] for U.S. It was the Sundance World Doc winner of both Best Director and Audience Awards. Earlier this month they acquired Three Monkeys from the bankrupt New Yorker whose auction earlier this month found no takers. So its catalog still resides with its creditor Technicolor.
Nowhere Boy went to The Weinstein Co. for U.S., Latin America and German speaking territories from Hanway.
The Greatest went to Senator for North America who saw it at Sundance. It was repped by Graham Taylor of Endeavor and CAA on behalf of the filmmakers.
Paranoids went to Oscilloscope from Visit Films for North America just before its SXSW premiere. The Toronto and Berlin film of Fortissimo, Unmistaken Child, went earlier to Oscilloscope for North America. Earlier in the month Oscilloscope acquired Burma VJ and The Garden.
B-Side acquired its first film for U.S., RiP: A Remix Manifesto before its SXSW screening. Disinformation will release it on DVD. In Canada Eye Steele and National Film Board of Canada will partner with B-Side on its release there.
One of several new U.S. distributors, Trela Media, acquired its first of 6 envisioned yearly acquisitions, Guest of Cindy Sherman which has played in several festivals already for North America.
Another new and innovative U.S. distribution configuration of Variance Films, Elementary Films and Argyle Productons will will release the Hot Docs, Hamptons and Margaret Mead festival film Nursery University in April 2009 in New York.
Lorber HT Digital acquired Intangible Asset #82 before it SXSW premiere and Nollywood Babylon which showed in Toronto and Sundance for North America.
Anvil! The Story of Anvil was acquired by VH1 for North America.
