Two mothers, grieving over their dead teenage sons, bond and then begin to wonder if the other's son wasn't responsible for their child's death in "Torn," a modest, emotionally lacking melodrama built around big themes and hot-button issues.
Mahnoor Baloch is Maryam, Pakistani by birth, American by choice. She and her husband Ali (Faran Tahir of "Star Trek" and "Elysium") have plunged into the American dream. He runs a Pakistani restaurant, she's a real estate agent. They're renovating their suburban California split-level and planning for the future.
But a message on their answering machine -- "I'm going over to the mall" -- upends their world completely. They think nothing of son Walter's words until they turn on the TV news. The mall's food court has blown up.
In the quietly heartbreaking aftermath of police coming to deliver the awful news, Walter's name added to an impromptu shrine of flowers and photos at the mall,...

Multicultural wish-fulfillment narratives are common in American indies, particularly post–9-11. The best, like 2007's The Visitor, keep the maudlin hand-holding to a minimum and allow the complexities of human interaction to do the heavy lifting. Jeremiah Birnbaum's Torn does just that, so when the inevitable camaraderie between unlikely characters develops, it actually feels possible. Maryam (Mahnoor Baloch), a Muslim American, and Lea (Dendrie Taylor), a stereotypically blue-collar Caucasian, meet after an explosion at the local mall has killed their teenage sons. Singularly shared experience quickly bonds the two, until the impending investigation into whether Maryam's mosque-attending son harbored anti-American sentiment ignites an unfortunate blame game. The h...

If there is anything we have learned post-9/11 is that the spectre of threat and the presence of fear can arrive from completely unexpected places. The face of terrorism has moved beyond cliché, with those wishing to lash out for whatever reasons coming from backgrounds that are surprisingly diverse. And it's against this backdrop that "Torn" unfolds. Directed by Jeremiah Birnbaum, from a script by Michael Richter, the film stars Mahnoor Baloch, Dendrie Taylor, Faran Tahir, Sharon Washington, Patrick St. Esprit and John Heard and tells the story of Maryam, an upper-middle class Pakistani immigrant and Lea, a working class mother, whose lives collide when both their sons are killed in what seems like an unfortunate gas line explosion at a local shopping mall. Faran Tahir may not be considered a household name yet but has guest starred in the many populist television shows like Warehouse 13, Blued Bloods, Charmed and Lost, to name a few as well as playing the evil sadistic Raza in Iron Man and the heroic Captain Robau in J.J Abram’s reboot of Star Trek in a brief but momentous role.
Faran will now be seen guest starring in the resurrected drama series, Dallas, where he plays Cliff Barnes, driver and right-hand man. He reveals what it feels like being part of the new series and what it felt like being the Captain of a Federation Starship and getting beaten up by Iron Man.
Did you ever watch the original series of Dallas?Dallas was a phenomenon in its time. I didn’t get to watch it regularly but I definitely knew who was who on it. The...

Yesterday, we told you of the casting of two ferocious characters in Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Patrick St. Esprit (Torn, Super 8) has been cast to play Romulus Thread and Haitian actress Meta Golding (Loving, CSI) will play the throat-ripping victor of District 2, Enobaria.
According to Deadline, the latest casting add is the announcement that Bruno Gunn (Sons of Anarchy, Oz) is set to play Brutus, an equally unsavory and brutal Hunger Games victor from District 2.
Synopsis:
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President...
