Ethan Coen’s Drive-Away Dolls certainly pulls from the aesthetic and narrative party bags of noir and road movies. It even indulges the pleasures of high lesbian camp as two friends are drawn into a government-connected conspiracy. But to call it pastiche, a term that could be handily affixed to any number of films by the Coen brothers, is inadequate here given the rollicking, casual, intimate nature of Drive-Away Dolls’s relationship to its generic forebearers. In the classic queer punk tradition of Bruce Labruce, John Waters, and Gregg Araki, Coen’s film knows when to pay homage and when to move to its own rhythm.
In its curious way, the film’s formulation of sameness and difference—conveyed through the way that it invokes everything from Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! to Kiss Me Deadly, as well as through the yin and yang of fuckgirl Jamie (Margaret Qualley) and the...

With the actor’s strike finally over, Matthew Lillard can finally talk about the plum role he has in Five Nights at Freddy’s. In a recent THR interview, Lillard mentioned being thrilled about how fans have reacted to the film, noting:
“Being 53 years old — and being around the block a couple times — I have a much deeper sense of appreciation in this moment than I probably have ever had because I didn’t expect it. I realize that these opportunities don’t come around that often. It’s been a really rich, joyful moment because I can sort of sit back and appreciate it on a deeper level.”
Lillard’s character, who has a rich mythology in the game, could well wind-up being a recurring presence in the Five Nights at Freddy’s world, especially with the film such a huge hit in theaters and on Peacock. But, it turns...

This Star Wars article contains spoilers for The Bad Batch.
Clone Force 99 is back in action, and while we know season 2 of Dave Filoni’s Star Wars: The Bad Batch is building toward a unified adventure, the first crop of episodes has taken the anthology approach by splitting up our characters and sending them off on their own arcs. But on top of throwing new challenges at our heroes, The Bad Batch‘s latest episode, “Faster,” also improves on an idea originally used in George Lucas’ most divisive Star Wars prequel.
Out of all of Lucas’ Skywalker Saga films, it’s arguably 1999’s The Phantom Menace that’s faced the most flak. Although highlights include Liam Neeson’s Qui-Gon Jinn, the epic Duel of the Fates, and the podracing scene on Mos Espa, this is all tarnished for some fans by Jar Jar Binks, an obvious Padmé reveal, and the young Anakin Skywalker storyline.

Disney+ is opening up the New Year just the way it likes to: with plenty of Star Wars. Disney+’s list of new releases for January 2023 is highlighted by a fresh season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch.
Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2 premieres its first two episodes on Wednesday, Jan. 4. New episodes of this show about an elite squad of clone troopers will follow each Wednesday. If nothing else, this Dave Filoni-project should ease the wait before The Mandalorian season 3.
Other Disney+ originals of note this month include Chasing Waves on Jan. 11 and Mila in the Multiverse on Jan. 25. The only new Disney+ movie in January will be King Shakir Recycle on Jan. 18. There aren’t many notable library titles to speak of but I would be lying if I said the title of the Nat Geo documentary Strangest Bird Alive on Jan. 6 didn’t intrigue me.

But he discovers that his old life still torments him when his wife is murdered in front of him and his young son. Now, with nothing to live for, this tragic event sends father and son on an epic journey of revenge and consequence. Scout Comics & Entertainment, which published the comic, will produce the feature adaptation alongside State Street.

“Habit” stirred controversy (and a petition to block its release) last year when conservatives caught wind that Paris Jackson was cast as a female Jesus Christ in it, with a purported lesbian coupling adding to the blasphemous offense. Well, it turns out that was much ado about almost nothing: There is no such sex scene in the film’s release cut, if indeed there ever was, and Jackson’s appearance is little more than a silent cameo.
On the other hand, fears that Janell Shirtcliff’s debut feature “ridicules people of faith” are closer to the mark. For those viewers curious enough to investigate, however, what may truly offend about “Habit” isn’t any sacrilegious content so much as the fact that it’s so infantile in that regard — and every other. This candy-colored dress-up excuse for a bunch of slumming models, rock musicians and miscellaneous scenesters might be termed a “Bratz” version of “Faster,...

Yesterday, Spanish-language site Vértice Cine posted an update on Faster, Cheaper, Better, the new movie from Nightcrawler director Dan Gilroy. The interesting-sounding project is about the rise of robots and the impact of automation on human workers. But what set tongues wagging was their announcement that the movie would star Brad Pitt and Harry Styles. Vanity Fair picked up on the story, made it sound like a done deal and the internet promptly lost its mind.
Based on this rumor, Pitt and Styles began trending on Twitter, borne on the wave of a cavalcade of tweets that can only be described as incredibly thirsty. Here’s but a sample…

Exclusive: FilmNation is selling international rights for Sundance darling Palm Springs, which previously sold to Hulu and Neon in a whopping $22M global deal at Park City.
Hulu currently has a limited international footprint (which is set to expand in 2021) so this gives the well-received rom-com a chance at reaching a broader audience overseas. We hear that Hulu auditioned sales companies for the film earlier this year and FilmNation recently won out.
In the U.S., the movie is set for a July 10 bow on SVOD platform Hulu. The plan was always for a theatrical release stateside via Neon but that is now more difficult due to the coronavirus.
Neon bosses confirmed yesterday during a Cannes virtual market panel that the film’s domestic cinema component would now largely come from drive-in venues. “Later in the year we would have considered a more traditional release, but now this is what makes sense,...

Russ Meyer, legendary for his lascivious approach to cheerfully lurid fare like Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and Vixen, plays it relatively straight in this adaptation of trash-meister Irving Wallace’s free-speech manifesto on pornography. The result is neither fish nor fowl and something that had never existed till The Seven Minutes – a dull Russ Meyer movie. Even so, Meyer’s editing rhythms are so out of the mainstream that it’s still almost experimental for a Fox studio movie. The 1971 release starred Wayne Maunder and Meyer mainstays Edy Williams and Charles Napier along with a few ringers including Yvonne DeCarlo, John Carradine and Wolfman Jack.

“The Haunting of Hill House” alum Oliver Jackson-Cohen has joined “The Haunting of Bly Manor” in a leading role, TheWrap has learned exclusively.
Jackson-Cohen — who played Luke Crain on “Hill House” and is the second Season 1 star to join Season 2 of the Netflix horror anthology series, following Victoria Pedretti’s casting — will play Peter, described simply as “a charming fellow.”
Additional character details are being kept under wraps, but TheWrap has learned Jackson-Cohen’s character will, of course, interact with Pedretti’s, a governess named Dani “who takes care of two very unusual children.”

Blumhouse's remake of The Invisible Man arrives in February. Here's what we know about the studio's latest monster movie!
The Invisible Man, the classic Universal monster movie based on H.G. Wells's novel, lives again in a new reboot from Universal and Blumhouse.
This reboot stars Oliver Jackson-Cohen, the London-born actor best known as Luke Crain on Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House, which – in its depiction of the character’s struggles with addiction and past trauma – impressed the film’s creative team enough to clinch the lead role, for which he brings an applicable skill set to the Invisible Man’s gradual emotional descent into villainy and murder. His character will (dis)appear opposite Elisabeth Moss, who co-stars as the focus of the title character's ire.
Leigh Whannell directed the film, having worked off her own adaptation script of the Wells story.

Oliver Jackson-Cohen, the star of “The Haunting of Hill House,” is attached for the lead role in “The Invisible Man” monster movie set up at Universal and Blumhouse, an individual with knowledge of the project tells TheWrap.
Jackson-Cohen will star alongside the previously announced Elisabeth Moss, Aldis Hodge, Harriet Dyer and Storm Reid in the horror reboot that is set to kick off production this month in Sydney, Australia.
Johnny Depp was previously attached to star as the lead in what was once meant to be Universal’s Dark Universe of films, a shared universe of movies that incorporated new takes on Old Hollywood monster characters, with movies announced based on both “The Wolf Man” and “Bride of Frankenstein.” That franchise kicked off with the Tom Cruise vehicle “The Mummy” that also starred Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Vin Diesel is here to set the record straight!
The 49-year-old Fate of the Furious star appears on Tuesday's The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where he responds to his co-star Charlize Theron's comments on the show earlier this month regarding their on-screen kiss. Theron compared Diesel to a "dead fish," and said she preferred "more movement" in her men.
"I'm the crazy chick that’s doing this horrible thing to him and, as he should've, his character is just standing there frozen, like a dead fish," Theron, 41, explained.

Dwayne Johnson may have just joined the Fast and the Furious squad a few years ago, but he might have a lot more of the franchise in his future.

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.

Earlier this year, the much anticipated box office juggernaut Furious 7 was released, and proceeded to break box office records on it’s way to a whopping $1.5 billion worldwide gross. This was great news for two of the film’s stars, The Rock (Never Dwayne Johnson, just The Rock) and Vin Diesel. They had just been a part of a groundbreaking money machine, so surely this success would carry over to their solo efforts, right? Yes and no. Both action heroes had come from similar narratives – good money in franchises, but failure with solo efforts (and both have two of the most entertaining social media presences, for what it’s worth) – but only one would overcome their woes. The Rock finally broke his cold slump at the box office, but Vin Diesel remained stale. 2015 has had plenty of interesting box office narratives, but none quite so Shakespearean as that of The Rock and Vin Diesel.

We've already got a number of reasons to be excited for "High-Rise." Of course, there's director Ben Wheatley. There's the awesome ensemble cast, which includes Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Elisabeth Moss, Luke Evans, and Stacy Martin. And now we've got the score to get buzzed about. Film Music Reporter reveals that the great Clint Mansell will score the movie. The composer is probably best known for his work with longtime collaborator Darren Aronofsky ("Black Swan" and "The Fountain" are particular highlights), but he has also lent to his talent to films as diverse as "Filth," "Faster," and "Last Night" (his work on the latter is particularly underrated). Needless to say, we're very excited to see what he brings to the J.G. Ballard adaptation about what happens when madness and violence envelop a luxury high-rise. No release date yet for the film, but fingers are crossed and we're...

It's been long in the works, but ITV has now confirmed that it's ordered a pilot for a revival of The Saint.
Set to go into production in 2016, this new take from writers Ed Whitmore (Arthur & George) and Chris Lunt (Prey) promises to bring Simon Templar - a roguish Robin Hood for the modern day - to a whole new audience.
But who could possibly follow in the esteemed footsteps of Sir Roger Moore (and Ian Ogilvy... and, erm, Val Kilmer) in bringing Leslie Charteris's gentleman thief to life? Digital Spy has picked out 12 potentials.
1. James Norton
Last year, Norton delivered two spectacularly disparate performances - as reprehensible Tommy Lee Royce on BBC One's Happy Valley and as 'sexy vicar' Sidney Chambers on ITV's Grantchester. Take a little of Royce's edginess, add a dash of Chambers's charm and you might just have yourself the perfect Saint.

In terms of movie adaptations, the output of bestselling author Nicholas Sparks stands as a perfect example of Hollywood’s adherence to the phrase, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” The “it” in question is Sparks’ very clear formula. With films such as The Notebook, The Last Song and Dear John in his back catalogue, we would surely be forgiven for thinking his storytelling, by this point, is simply a case of joining up the dots, and his latest romance – The Longest Ride – certainly looks as though it will prove that to be true.
Starring Britt Robertson (Cake) and Scott Eastwood (Fury), the Nicholas Sparks book is this time adapted by Craig Bolotin (Black Rain) and is directed by George Tillman Jr. (Faster). Admittedly, I was a little hesitant to post this, since it’s not a black film, as it doesn't tell a story about black people in it (at least, it doesn't look that way in the trailer). But it was directed by a black director, George Tillman Jr. And as you can see, his latest film, "The Longest Ride," for Fox, coming out on April 10th, is light years away from anything he’s done previously, including "Soul Food," "Notorious," "Men of Honor," "Faster" and "The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete." This time around, Tillman heads straight into young rural romance territory, in this film version of Nicholas Sparks’ best...

On April 10, 2015, the world will be treated to another adaptation of one of Nicholas Sparks's romance novels. The Longest Ride is coming to you from 20th Century Fox, under the direction of George Tillman Jr., who have us the Biggie Smalls biopic Notorious and Dwayne Johnson's Faster. The film will feature the acting talents of Scott Eastwood, Britt Robertson, Alan Alda, Oona Chaplin, and Jack Huston.
The film now has an official trailer, and here it is:
"Based on the bestselling novel by master storyteller Nicholas Sparks, The Longest Ride centers on the star-crossed love affair between Luke, a former champion bull rider looking to make a comeback, and Sophia, a college student who is about to embark upon her dream job in New York City’s art world. As conflicting paths and ideals test their relationship, Sophia and Luke make an unexpected and fateful connection with Ira,...

"I cried at 'The Notebook.' If anybody said they didn't cry in 'The Notebook' they are just lying," Scott Eastwood declared to Et. If you wept while watching the Nicholas Sparks adaptation Eastwood speaks of, then chances are you are the target demographic for "The Longest Ride." And the first trailer is here. Co-starring Eastwood and Britt Robertson and directed by George Tillman Jr. ("Notorious," "Faster"), the movie tracks some intersecting storylines, first following a love affair between Luke, a former champion bull rider looking to make a comeback, and Sophia, a college student who is about to embark upon her dream job in New York City’s art world. Will the country boy and city bound gal make it? Well, good thing Sophia and Luke make an unexpected connection with Ira, whose memories of his own decades-long romance with his beloved wife deeply inspire the young couple. Cue tears,...

This Friday will see the release of The Rock’s (None of this Dwayne Johnson nonsense, he’s The Rock) newest action tentpole Hercules, with him playing the historic hero. You’ve probably already made up your mind if you’re going to see this film or not, you’re not anxiously waiting on the fence. You probably haven’t given a second thought to Hercules. But I have, and for the first time in a long time, I’m worried about The Rock.
When you really stop to think about it, The Rock has built a career becoming one of the most unlikely box office superstars. In 2013 Forbes named him the highest grossing actor of the year with his films that year bringing in $1.3 billion. But I say box office superstar with a caveat: He only smashes numbers when he’s part of an ensemble. Put the guy in...

Young star of Boardwalk Empire, Jack Huston, has been cast as co-lead in the upcoming adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel, The Longest Ride. It came as no surprise when Fox 2000 snapped up the rights to the book when it was published in 2013, as previous works by Sparks – including The Notebook, Dear John and Safe Haven – have proved extremely popular in the romantic drama genre. The Longest Ride looks like it will be no exception.
The story begins with an elderly man, trapped in a car following a crash on a snowbound highway. Awaiting rescue, the steadily weakening man reflects on the years he spent with his beloved, but deceased, wife. Elsewhere, as the elderly man reminisces, an Art History college senior is busy finding unlikely love with a bull rider. Eventually, a strange occurrence causes the two stories to intertwine.
Jack Huston will play the younger version of the...
