James Garner movies on TCM: ‘Grand Prix,’ ‘Victor Victoria’ among highlights (photo: James Garner ca. 1960) James Garner, whose film and television career spanned more than five decades, died of "natural causes" at age 86 on July 19, 2014, in the Los Angeles suburb of Brentwood. On Monday, July 28, Turner Classic Movies will present an all-day marathon of James Garner movies (see below) as a tribute to the Oscar-nominated star of Murphy’s Romance and Emmy-winning star of the television series The Rockford Files. Among the highlights in TCM’s James Garner film lineup is John Frankenheimer’s Monaco-set Grand Prix (1966), an all-star, race-car drama featuring Garner as a Formula One driver who has an affair with the wife (Jessica Walter) of his former teammate (Brian Bedford). Among the other Grand Prix drivers facing their own personal issues are Yves Montand and Antonio Sabato, while Akira Kurosawa’s (male) muse Toshiro Mifune plays a...

In Rush, Daniel Brühl plays Niki Lauda, an Austrian Formula One racecar driver who was severely injured in a 1976 crash at the Nürburgring during the German Grand Prix. The film focuses on the story of the rivalry between Lauda and another driver, English playboy James Hunt. Hunt is portrayed in the film by Chris Hemsworth. The portrayal of Lauda’s post-Nürburgring disfigurement required much time in makeup with Academy Award-winning prosthetic makeup designer Mark Coulier. “Of course, we needed prosthetics and that made me nervous at first,” Brühl says. “The funny thing was that after the first test, Mark’s assistants … Continue reading →

Rush pulls no punches when it comes to showing the dangers of Formula 1 in the 1970s.
"I accept every time I get in my car, there's a 20% chance I could die," states Daniel Brühl's Niki Lauda during the film. While the factual accuracy of this statement is debatable, there is no doubting that Formula One was a hugely dangerous sport back in the '70s.
But it was also hugely exciting. Rush, which follows the rivalry between the decade's two biggest names, Niki Lauda and James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth), works hard to capture a sense of the risk and reward that drivers would go through for each race.
Behind all that risk is stunt driver Niki Faulkner. Charged with the task of pushing real and replica classic F1 cars to the ragged edge, Faulkner played a large part in making the movie so exciting.

Ron Howard's Rush piqued my interest in the true story of the rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda, Formula 1 race car drivers in the 1970s, so the straightfoward documentary Hunt vs. Lauda fits the bill perfectly. Focusing on the 1976 Grand Prix season, Hunt vs. Lauda is presented in a straightforward style: talking head interviews, news clips, and simple on-screen graphics. Interview subjects are few in number, but well-chosen -- Lauda; Hunt's older sister, Sally Jones; Daniele Audetto and Alastair Caldwell, team managers for Ferrari and McLaren, respectively; journalist Peter Windsor -- and each has vivid memories. This is especially evident in the talks with the team managers, who clearly harbor deep-seated emotions about that season. Director Matthew Whiteman skillfully weaves together the...

As with the semifictionalized Rush, this documentary look at the first superstars of Formula One is gripping even if you couldn’t care less about racing. I’m “biast” (pro): loved Rush
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

If you were as captivated by Ron Howard’s Rush as I was — it still hasn’t been dislodged from my Top 10 after all this season’s Oscar bait — then you may want to check out this recent, short (under an hour) BBC TV documentary about the legendary rivalry between Formula One drivers James Hunt and Nikki Lauda, which framed the 1976 Grand Prix season. As with Howard’s narrative, the true story — which Rush, semifictionalized as it is, adheres closely to — doesn’t demand an interest in the sport: it’s full of reality that transcends racing. Via lots of vintage footage,...

The release of Ron Howard’s Rush, one of the most anticipated (not to say mega-hyped) films of the year, inevitably begs comparisons to some of the great car-themed movies of the past.

It seems that automobiles have played key roles in films of every genre, from drama to horror to comedy to documentary. In some, like American Graffiti, Rebel without a Cause, and Bonnie and Clyde, the vehicles primarily help set the tone of the era in which the stories are set. In other films the cars themselves are the story. The animated Cars comes to mind, along with the Love Bug series, Christine, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. And then there are films in which the cars have taken their place alongside the human stars as film icons in their own right. James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5, for instance, as...

Given that both the gasoline-powered internal combustion engine and the motion picture camera came to be at almost the same time, and given that both cars and movies have gone on to hold such special places in American culture, it’s no wonder that Hollywood has had a long love affair with automobiles and racing. From the silent film Racing Hearts (1922), to Disney’s Herbie franchise, to the late Tony Scott’s Days of Thunder (1990), to Universal’s Fast & Furious series, almost as long as there have been movies, there have been movies about cars. Now, award-winning director Ron Howard has entered the automotive film waters with Rush, a biographical action-drama about the 1976 Formula One season and the rivalry between drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Rush is a very good movie, and definitely one to keep an eye on as we head into awards season.

As part of the recent launch activity around Ron Howard's highly anticipated Formula One biopic Rush, I was lucky enough to attend a screening event at Millbank Tower in London, organised by Motorsport Magazine and Altitude.
The film charts the lives of F1 legends James Hunt and Nikki Lauda and their rivalry leading up to the extraordinary events of the 1976 season. The highlight of the event was a talk with Alastair Caldwell, former McLaren team manager. Caldwell knew both drivers closely and was full of interesting anecdotes. These included small details like the way in which Nikki Lauda's incredible return from a life threatening injury was aided by his team doctor making him undergo the painful process of daily swims in the sea so that the salt water could help with his burns.
Slightly more amusing were the anecdotes around Hunt, for example his turning up to the Canadian...

Vroom! Vroom! Time to strap ourselves in and wait for the green light. The multiplex becomes the big racetrack for this weekend’s new formula one, based on true events thrill ride, Rush. Of all the different pro sports, auto racing lags considerably behind the team competitions like baseball and football. as a movie setting. The 1960′s and early 70′s may have been its most popular decades with several big films anchored by big movie stars who were also big motor sports fans: James Garner in Grand Prix, Paul Newman in Winning, and Steve McQueen in Le Mans. A couple of big box office draws have indulged their need for speed more recently: Sly Stallone in Driven, Tom Cruise in Days Of Thunder, and a parody with Will Ferrell in Talledaga Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby along with the Cars films from the Pixar gang. The director of Rush,...

One Big Scene is a weekly column dedicated to spectacular visual sequences we’re recommending you see in the theater. If you have ones you’d like us to write about, let us know in the comments section. Earlier on the site, we ran through the movies that we believed had the most thrilling car races, from Grease to Grand Prix. To that list, we have to add Rush, Ron Howard’s new Formula One drama that reconstructs the fabled rivalry between impulsive racer James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and his calculated rival Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl). But the director and his screenwriter, Peter Morgan, use a specific moment in the racers’ years-long rivalry as the focal point of their movie, and it’s there we find this week’s One Big Scene. ...

For many, Rush , the new Formula 1 racing drama from director Ron Howard, will be seen as a return to form for the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind Apollo 13 , A Beautiful Mind and Frost/Nixon . It stars Thor 's Chris Hemsworth as James Hunt, the partying British racer who fought his way through the ranks to get into the 1976 Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit where he went head to head with Austrian driver Niki Lauda, played by Daniel Brühl. The rivalry between the two men begins from the very first time they meet, and while both racers meet women who have an impact on their lives, Hunt meeting and marrying British model Suzy Miller, played by Olivia Wilde, and Lauda meeting an Austrian woman named Marlene, played by Romania's Alexandra Maria Lara, neither can quell their...

Chris Hemsworth may have had to drop about 30 pounds in order to play late British race car driver James Hunt in Rush (his Thor bod was too big for the Formula One cars) but his costar had to go through quite a transformation, too. Daniel Brühl plays Austrian racing champ Niki Lauda in the Ron Howard-directed film about the real life rivalry between Lauda and Hunt in the 1970s. Lauda's face was disfigured after he suffered extensive burns in a near fatal accident during the 1976 German Grand Prix. Oscar-winning prosthetics artist Mark Coulier was responsible for creating Brühl's facial and head scars. "The first time, I think I fell asleep because it took six to seven hours,"...

Even since directing his first movie with 1977's Grand Theft Auto , Ron Howard was well on his way to make the transition from being one of television's favorite actors to becoming one of America's top filmmakers. In the decades that followed, Howard earned the respect of his peers by helming everything from light romantic comedies to serious historical dramas about some of America's defining moments, effortlessly bouncing behind genres before winning his first two Oscars with 2002's A Beautiful Mind . His new movie Rush takes place in the competitive world of Formula 1 racing, and it revolves around the rivalry between two racers--Chris Hemsworth's James Hunt and Daniel Bruhl's Niki Lauda--that dominated the Grand Prix season of 1976. It may be one of Howard's most...

Geez, these F1 2013 videos are coming on fast and furious (haha, cars!). In the most recent trailer for the upcoming racing sim from Codemasters, the focus is placed on the seemingly very important Ferrari 312 T2. I’m not intimately familiar with it or anything, but that doesn’t change the fact that it looks incredibly sexy coming around the bend at the beginning of this video.
Aside from slow motion car porn, the trailer is essentially a promo for the game’s new Classic Edition. In that version, you’ll be able to race famous cars, drivers, and circuits from various eras of F1 history. My knowledge on that is a bit stiff, but I imagine F1 junkies will really get a kick out of it. Other sports games have been doing this kind of thing for years, so it’s definitely a good move on Codemasters’ end.

Spanish-born German actor Daniel Brühl has been something of an indie cinema darling for a decade, now, following his breakthrough in the delightful Goodbye, Lenin in 2003. He came to the wider attention of English-speaking audiences with a superb turn in Inglourious Basterds, but 2013 looks to be the year in which he'll announce himself as a major, and prominent, talent. Though Rush director Ron Howard told us that German investors were keen for an American movie star to play the role of Niki Lauda in the forthcoming biopic, any such apprehensions will have since been put to bed, following the sublime performance by Daniel Brühl – and we had the great pleasure of discussing the film with the actor.
Out on September 13th, Rush explores the intense rivalry between Lauda and James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth), which culminated dramatically in the 1976 season. Brühl tells us about his own personal meetings with Lauda – and what the racer had to say of his performance. He also tells us which of the two F1 racers he is more similar to in personality – and who would win in a race between himself and co-star Hemsworth.
What attracted you to Rush and what were your first thoughts when reading the script?

Ron Howard‘s Rush movie has released a bunch of new images to get you hyped for the September 20th release of the Formula 1 rivalry film, and put together with the synopsis, you may be all set really.
Remember the glory days of Formula 1 racing, and the “legendary” rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda? You don’t? No, you don’t, because you aren’t pushing 100, and the “glory days” of the sport didn’t exactly add up to the sort of thing everyone chattered wildly around the water cooler about even if you were.
Nevertheless, Ron Howard is convinced that not only do you want to see a film about the sport itself, and these two specific rivals, but he’s pretty sure you want to know all the glorious personal secrets of their lives… or something.
If you think anything could be more interesting, you are just fooling yourself.

Check out new images from Ron Howard's Rush. Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Bruhl star in a re-creation of the rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Hemsworth plays the charismatic Englishman James Hunt and Brühl is the disciplined Austrian perfectionist Niki Lauda, whose clashes on the Grand Prix racetrack epitomized the contrast between these two extraordinary characters, a distinction reflected in their private lives. Set against the sexy, glamorous and spectacular golden age of Formula 1 racing, Rush portrays the exhilarating true story of two of the greatest rivals the world has ever witnessed—handsome English playboy Hunt and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Lauda. Taking us into their personal lives on and off the track, Rush follows...

The racing is superb as is Daniel Brühl's performance but the film is undermined by clunky dialogue and fundamental untruths
It was Jackie Stewart who gave the old Nürburgring a nickname: the Green Hell. He hated the 14-mile circuit in the Eifel mountains. But that wasn't good enough for Peter Morgan. When the writer of Frost/Nixon and The Queen came to create his screenplay for Rush, the new film about the rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda, a more dramatic introduction was needed for the location of Lauda's terrible crash in 1976.
"In Formula One," a TV commentator announces in the film, setting the scene for the near-fatal weekend, "it is known as the Graveyard."
Well, no, it isn't. And it wasn't, even in 1976. Yes, five drivers died there during grand prix meetings. A terrible toll, of course. But at Monza, to take just one example, the equivalent...

In Ron Howard's new film, Daniel Brühl plays Formula One driver Niki Lauda the year he fought James Hunt for the championship – and suffered a horrific and disfiguring crash. He talks about meeting the straight-talking racing legend
On the day Daniel Brühl comes to London to meet the Guardian, Niki Lauda is in Germany at the Nürburgring racetrack. Lauda is there for the Grand Prix, in his capacity as non-executive chairman of the Mercedes Formula One team, although Nürburgring is also where, in 1976, the Austrian had the crash that almost killed him and left him disfigured. The accident is the epicentre of Ron Howard's Rush, which dramatises the rivalry between methodical champion Lauda (played by Brühl) and his womanising, booze-guzzling nemesis, Britain's James Hunt (Thor's Chris Hemsworth).
Brühl is stuck here talking to me about Lauda and the crash, while the real deal is over there where it all happened.

It’s certain that Ron Howard is one of the more frustratingly inconsistent directors working today; every riveting masterpiece (Frost/Nixon) is usually followed by one or two duds (Angels & Demons, The Dilemma) before he returns on stonking form, just as he has with Rush, an exhilarating, white-knuckle thrill-ride that decisively earns the commendation of “sweaty palm movie of the year.”
Rush is based on the riveting rivalry between two Formula 1 racers – care-free, hedonistic British playboy James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and the more studious, serious Austrian Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl) – from their humble beginnings in Formula 3, right up to the shocking accident at the 1976 German Grand Prix that nearly claimed Lauda’s life, and then beyond.
Through the duality of Hunt and Lauda’s characters, Ron Howard’s racing movie proves to be, much like Asif Kapadia’s sublime documentary Senna, an irresistibly compelling human drama...

Ron Howard's Rush focuses on one of auto-racing's most heated rivalries — the battle between Formula 1 drivers Niki Lauda and James Hunt during the 1976 world championship season. As they did in the 1970s, today's F1 drivers go wheel-to-wheel on a global stage--in one race season, some 20 Grand Prix events take place on different tracks around the globe. This year the host countries include Australia, Bahrain, Brazil, Canada, India, Italy, Singapore, the U.K. and the U.S. Photos: 'Rush': Exclusive Photos of Ron Howard, Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl But for the last three decades, F1

I'm sitting down to see Rush just as you read this post and apparently the review embargo was lifted today, but I think I'll hold my review until mid-stream at the Toronto Film Festival so as to allow the film to settle a little and to give me a little padding in-between the onslaught of reviews I'll have to write during the fest. Directed by Ron Howard, Rush stars Chris Hemsworth (The Avengers) and Daniel Bruhl (Inglourious Basterds) as racing rivals James Hunt and Niki Lauda, whose clashes on the Grand Prix racetrack epitomized the contrast between these two extraordinary characters, a distinction reflected in their private lives. The film hits New York and L.A. theaters on September 20 and will expand nationwide a week later. Check out the clip below.

Director: Ron Howard; Screenwriter: Peter Morgan; Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Brühl, Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Marie Lara, Natalie Dormer ; Running time: 122 mins; Certificate: 15
If the story of the rivalry between death-defying Formula One drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda and their stunning duel in 1976 were a work of fiction, many would brand it overly contrived and implausible. Yet, somehow, it happened. But could director Ron Howard and screenwriter Peter Morgan, who combined superbly to bring a similarly contentious clash to the screens with Frost/Nixon, manage to do full justice to this adrenalin-fuelled tale? Not quite.
Despite their best intentions, exhilarating race sequences and an Oscar-worthy turn from Daniel Brühl as Lauda, Rush fails to fully satisfy because it doesn't delve deep enough into the psyches of men who risked their lives in often treacherous racetrack conditions in the pursuit of victory. What kind of fuel are their minds running on?...

A famous Formula One rivalry becomes a biopic in Ron Howard's Rush. Here's Seb's review of a great motorsport movie...
Sometimes, reality can prove itself better than fiction. If Rush were an entirely fabricated story about the rivalry between two racing drivers in the 1970s, then it would probably have a quite clear delineation between them: a smiling "good guy" for the audience to root for and who ultimately triumphs, versus a cynical "bad guy" who frequently looks to be on top before his eventual defeat. Instead, it's a film with two heroes, allowing the viewer to decide whether to sympathise with maverick playboy James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth), analytical recluse Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl), or both.
In stark contrast to the last great F1-related film – Asif Kapadia's documentary Senna, whose influence creeps into almost every corner of Ron Howard's biopic...

It's about time. Finally, a poster, albeit an international version, has come along with the car actually alone in the poster. This is James Hunt's (Chris Hemsworth) McLaren F1 in Ron Howard's Rush, also with Daniel Bruhl as Niki Lauda, Olivia Wilde, Natalie Dormer, Alexandra Maria Lara, Joséphine de La Baume, Pierfrancesco Favino, Patrick Baladi and Cristian Solimeno. Peter Morgan wrote the screenplay for the Universal Pictures release which opens on September 27th, 2013 and is produced by Howard, Brian Grazer, Andrew Eaton, Eric Fellner, Brian Oliver and Morgan. The epic action-thriller stars Hemsworth as the charismatic Englishman James Hunt and Brühl as the disciplined Austrian perfectionist Niki Lauda, whose clashes on the Grand Prix racetrack epitomized the contrast between these two extraordinary characters, a distinction reflected in their private lives.

I’m not enough of a Formula One junkie to instantly start drooling/sweating/other bodily function at the mention of a 1988 Ferrari F1-87/88C, but that doesn’t mean I’m not enough of a general geek for those things to start happening once I actually see a picture.
The car, which is shown above, is quite beautiful and so, I suppose it should be considered good news then that this very vehicle will be included in this year’s edition of Codemasters’ yearly F1 simulator, F1 2013.
The rest of the jargon is kind of lost on me, but I’m sure anyone more familiar with the series or the sport will eat this up. So for those folks, be sure to check out the press release below. The trailer below is both awesomely and comically dramatic, so that’s something as well.

"More powerful than even the fear of death itself is the will to win."
Director Ron Howard's Rush may be based on real events from the 1976 Formula One racing season, but from the looks of the newest trailer, this flick could have what it takes to lure in audiences who can't tell the Grand Prix of Monaco from the Daytona 500. While there are plenty of fast cars and explosive crashes in this trailer, the focus is on the people in the cars, namely James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl). Between their exploits, their determination, and their rivalry, there is plenty of human drama to tell in this based-on-a-true-story flick. Rush is slated to hit theaters September 27th.

Ron Howard's Rush looks like an incredible movie. The more I see of the film, the better it looks. Universal Pictures has released two new international posters for the film featuring Chris Hemsworth as Formula One racer James Hunt and Daniel Brühl as his rival Niki Lauda. The movie is based on a true story that focuses on the intense rivalry of these two drivers. I've never been into F1 racing, but this sure like a fantastically intense story.
Rush races into theaters on September 20th, 2013. You can check out the latest trailer for the film here, and the synopsis is below:
