It’s been less than two years since the close of Nexstar’s acquisition of The CW and the network’s primetime slate could not look more different.
In addition to the broadcaster’s shifted focus to sports, unscripted fare and foreign imports/co-productions, The CW will soon be getting into the original TV movie business. In an interview with Variety, network president Dennis Miller and president of entertainment Brad Schwartz revealed that The CW is planning to air its own slate of films (in addition to acquired features) on Sunday nights beginning later this year.
The network already has a Sunday night movie block, which will continue in the fall according to the network’s newly-released fall 2024 schedule. But in addition to airing well-known studio movies, they will be producing movies of their own — as many as ten. The network is prepping a deal with an unnamed TV movie...

There will not be a fourth season of Canadian comedy Run the Burbs. Co-creator and star Andrew Phung shared the news Thursday on Instagram that CBC has canceled the series after three seasons.
“It is with mixed emotions that we share the news that CBC has decided not to move forward with a fourth season of Run the Burbs,” Phung wrote. “Naturally, we were saddened to hear this, but it’s also offered a chance for us to reflect on the 3 seasons we’ve made.”
“Making Run the Burbs was an absolute joy and we’re so incredibly proud of what this show has accomplished on and off screen. We’re also excited to have season three gearing up for its premiere on one of the leading networks in the US, and an amazing partner for the show, The CW. Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment at The CW, has “ambitious” goals.
As The CW moves away from only serving young adult audiences towards rivaling the Big Four broadcast networks – ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC – Schwartz knows he needs to find a hit to do that.
This, after all, is the man credited with helping Schitt’s Creek become an Emmy-winning smash.
“We recognize where we’re coming from. We’re the underdogs competing against Titans. But ultimately what we’re striving for is to have everyone stop writing big four networks and start writing big five network. We know it’s going to take some time, but that’s the goal,” he said at the top of his TCA press tour presentation.

Canada is the nation that brought Schitt’s Creek, Run the Burbs and Letterkenny into the world, but it has been a rough period for a country that peered over the border last year and watched the worst U.S. strike action for a generation.
Talks between the Canadian Media Producers Association (Cmpa) and the Writers Guild of Canada (Wgc) over a new Independent Production Agreement (Ipa) have resumed, amid tensions around falling fees, mini-rooms and AI, and we have spoken to multiple connected sources to assess the state of play.
Negotiations restarted this morning, we hear, after a first round of bargaining between the two sides ended without a deal on November 23.
The Cmpa and Wgc have been looking to strike a new three-year Ipa since October, and, whisper it, fears about a strike have lingered in the background.

The fall season is officially underway, and that can only mean one thing:
TV ratings are back, baby!
Viewing is more fragmented than ever, but the numbers are still a good indicator of how shows are performing.
The Irrational may have had little buzz, but it managed to outperform every Quantum Leap Season 1 episode in the 10 p.m. slot among total viewers.
The Jesse L. Martin procedural kicked off on Monday with 4.1 million total viewers and a 0.4 rating.
NBC will be happy with the show improving on the sci-fi drama, which will unspool its second season on Wednesdays, beginning October 4, 2023.
The big test for The Irrational will be how it holds up in the coming weeks, but the numbers are respectable out of The Voice.
