First of all, this was unnecessary and ridiculously funny. It hit a level of cringe that it makes you wonder how any of the actors accepted to be part of it.
However, I gave it a 6/10 for the effort that any movie requires to be put into.
But most of all, I gave it this actually high enough rating for the quality it delivered, for what it could have been.
It is crazy what a good movie it could have been, not one which can't surpass the 5.5 rate.
I strongly believe there will never be enough cinematic representation of coming out stories of older people. But this movie could have hit it perfectly- the boy who decided to turn his back on "standards", to accept being perfectly comfortable into his identity. The man who had to live confined into society's rules, forced to believe what the church says, to be God's flawless man.
From time to time, there were actually lines that hit it deep, but it was honestly too hard to focus on them, taking into the consideration the whole context. But those little moments, like the conversation between Gary and Sandy, the moment between Gary and Cameron on the tennis field, and Patty's monologue at the end- those would have perfectly made an enjoyable, lachrymatory film. They really could have contoured it into a some sort of love story, where in the end one of them respects the other's last desire.
But this movie was either never taken too seriously by the producers, or it tried too hard.
Would I recommend this movie to anyone?
Yes, if you want to laugh at badly timed jokes, weird & lecherous scenarios and vulgar words.
I won't say I feel like could have used the 90 minutes of my life in much better ways, because this movie was simply like endlessly watching silly videos and podcasts on Youtube. You always ask yourself "What did I just watch?", but you keep doing it and then go on about your day.
And Lukas Gage is a pleasure to look at no matter what, I will add that.
