You might think Danny Dyer is a limited actor, but you’re wrong. He is a shining star of the British film industry, and deserves to be considered in the same breath as former BAFTA rising stars Noel Clarke and Adam Deacon, who have gone on to worldwide success as the guy that died at the start of Star Trek Into Darkness and that one who’s in all those films you haven’t seen.
In a career that has lasted almost 25 years, Dyer is just about hitting the zenith of his achievements, following the likes of Barbara Windsor, Shane Ritchie and the bassist out of Spandau Ballet into the most important role in Eastenders – the landlord of the Queen Vic. There he will pull pints, commit adultery with everyone in a skirt and then be murdered horribly, if past events are anything to go...

A witless sub-Death Wish thriller with a leading man, Danny Dyer, who remains hard to take seriously
Reading this on a mobile? Click here
Having infamously advised readers of Zoo magazine to cut their ex-girlfriends' faces (a joke, apparently), Danny Dyer now spends much of his spare time telling journalists that he's going to break their faaakin nose for the crime of disrespectfully laughing at his risible geezer shtick.
After several years of such petulant threats, I find it harder than ever to take Dyer's hackneyed hardman act seriously, which somewhat undercuts this low-budget Death Wish knock-off. There are other problems: the script is challengingly witless ("There was a time when I would have bled to keep the red in the Union Jack!"), the politics (sexual/social/racial) tediously toxic, and the catalogue of "you burned my parents so I'm going to pour concrete dahhn your froat" murders sadistically mundane.

He’s been commendably honest about taking on under-par projects to pay his mortgage and turkeys like Pimp and Run For Your Wife have made Danny Dyer’s Pinter-endorsed heyday seem a distant Mockney memory. Unfortunately for Dyer and writer/director Stephen Reynolds, their collaboration on revenge thriller Vendetta will likely be judged by the star’s several cinematic sins. Which is a shame, because this Dagenham Death Wish – or Romford Rambo, if you like – isn’t just a slick and confidently made pot-boiler, it’s also a film featuring Dyer’s best performance since The Football Factory. Maybe even his best ever.
Styled as ‘judge, jury, executioner’ by the film’s surprisingly restrained marketing campaign, our hero Jimmy Vickers (Dyer) is on his way back from Afghanistan, hoping for a warm family welcome to wash away the memories of his Geneva Convention-flouting work for the Special Forces. But Jimmy...

Human Traffic star – who is set to play landlord of Queen Vic – put Old Mother Media into liquidation with debts of over £30,000

Danny Dyer has closed his film company after it went bust owing more than £30,000, according to the Daily Mirror.
The cheeky chappy doyen of the Brit gangster flick put Old Mother Media into liquidation in August. The company's largest debt, £25,000, is to Hm Revenue and Customs.
Dyer is perhaps best known for his role in the cult 90s rave culture film Human Traffic, as well as for a series of four movies with the British mob drama director Nick Love between 2001 and 2007. His career has stalled in recent years: 2009's Pimp made a reported £205 at the UK box office, while a big-screen adaptation of the long-running stage farce Run for Your Wife received some of the...

I struggle to remember a more oppressive portrayal of crime as a "family business" than that offered by the Australian thriller Animal Kingdom (2010, Optimum, 15). James Frecheville stars as Joshua "J" Cody, a misplaced youth who finds himself in the care of a tight-knit brood of sociopathic outlaws for whom the bank robbery business offers dwindling returns. Under constant surveillance from the police, and scornful of the allure of drug dealing and day trading, the Cody clan seem suicidally set on one last hurrah in which "J" must play a small but significant part. Will his pack loyalties outweigh his hard-learned survival instincts? Or will offers of a witness protection programme from paternal Sergeant Leckie (Guy Pearce) cause him to betray his violent brood?

And the fourth story today about a movie with the word "dark" somewhere in its title has come our way, this time for the mysterious Dark Peak, which we last told you about a few months ago during Afm.
Dark Peak is a sci-fi thriller in the vein of The Philadelphia Experiment meets The Descent and based on a true story.
Written by Alistair Audsley and directed by Ben Jagger, the film tells the story of a group of hikers on Dark Peak who encounter a terrifying, mysterious force. The one surviving member must convince his rescuers that something is very wrong, so wrong that he cannot conceive of its full impact until it is too late.
Since WWII there have been over 50 unexplained air crashes on Dark Peak in the UK.
The film is being produced by Paul Tucker on behalf of Belief Films, who has been involved in producing films such as Braveheart,...

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about producer Jonathan Sothcott’s Strippers vs Werewolves, but that’s all changed with the announcement that Sothcott has found a director in Jonathan Glendening (13Hrs), who’ll be joining actresses Adele Silva and just-announced Barbara Nedeljakova (Hostel) on the project.
From the statement released on Dread Central:
We’ve been busy readying our kick-ass style comedy horror Strippers vs Werewolves at Black and Blue Towers over Christmas. One of the key steps forward was securing the right director, someone film literate enough to make the material work yet with a pedigree that distributors bought into. Step forward Jonathan Glendening, who directed last year’s uber-slick straight werewolf film 13 Hours. I saw that film at Frightfest because Gemma Atkinson, one of the stars, is a pal, and I was really impressed – it was a truly excellent example of low budget filmmaking,...

Over at Dread Central, Strippers vs. Werewolves producer Jonathan Sothcott said that the film has a director and star. The director? Jonathan Glendening, who last directed 13 Hours. The star? Barbara Nedeljakova of Hostel and Hostel Part II fame.

Producer Jonathan Sothcott dropped us a line today to let us know that the search is over for a director and leading lady for his next upcoming feature, Strippers vs. Werewolves.
"Over the last 6 months we've been slightly out of the horror game - apart from steering the UK releases of Dead Cert and Devil's Playground - as Billy Murray and I have been working on a romcom with Richard E Grant called How to Stop Being a Loser and a quirky Danny Dyer thriller called 7Lives, but we are very much back in our favourite genre in 2011!"

Danny Dyer has become the byword for low-budget, no-quality Brit-trash cinema, but beneath the cockney swagger there's a decent actor struggling to get out. Stuart Heritage comes to the rescue
Last Tuesday saw the premiere of a new Danny Dyer film, Basement (the Daily Mail reported that the most glamorous guest at the event was someone who came third on Big Brother in 2006). Admittedly a new Dyer film is not really news, given that he knocks them out with such exhausting frequency that he makes Nicolas Cage look like Jd Salinger. In fact, he's got another one, The Last Seven, coming out next week. By the end of the year, Dyer will have starred in 20 films since 2004, with enough spare time to squeeze in 11 TV shows, two plays, a Grand Theft Auto game, countless radio commercials for everything from UKTV Gold to Exchange & Mart, his online store (where you can...

Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time (12A)
(Mike Newell, 2010, Us) Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley, Alfred Molina. 116 mins
You can tell by the title, the presence of producer Jerry Bruckheimer and the colossal expense how badly this wants to be the next Pirates Of The Caribbean. But it follows the family-friendly franchise formula so slavishly, there are few surprises. On the plus side, the leads are perfectly likable, the pace lively and the Arabian-themed spectacle impressive, but the British accents and incongruous Iraq-invasion parallel only point up what a dubious post-Orientalist wish-fulfilment it really is.
Bad Lieutenant (18)
(Werner Herzog, 2009, Us) Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer. 122 mins
At last Herzog finds a replacement for the infamous Klaus Kinski, as Cage's long-repressed wild side is, er, uncaged, in an ironic portrait of post-Katrina cop corruption. Nothing like the original, it's more of an insane black comedy, with pulp crime...

There's nothing to recommend Danny Dyer's mock-doc about the Soho sex industry – it's just plain unpleasant, writes Cath Clarke
Now relieved of his Zoo magazine column, Danny Dyer shows his gentler side in this grotty stumble through Soho's sleazy brothels. Only kidding. He plays a porn baron, Stanley, and chews his way through such gems as: "Break that little tart in. Get her on her back." Classy. Writer/director Robert Cavanah portrays one of his pimps, who has a taste for poetry and suspects his girls are being bumped off in extreme pornos ("No one is going to get snuffed on my watch"). This really is snoringly predictable and Cavanah nonsensically presents it as footage filmed by a documentary team: a real doco unit would have scarpered to the nearest cop shop after witnessing five seconds of beatings and torture. With nil insight – into the sex industry or anything...

Danny Dyer enjoys gangster roles but worries about being typecast. The 'Pimp' actor - who has become well known for playing hard man characters in movies such as 'Adulthood' and 'Straightheads' - says he's glad people like to see him in his typical gangster style parts, but wants to do something new. Speaking at the World Premiere of 'Pimp' at the Odeon Cinema in Covent Garden, Danny told Bang Showbiz: ''I'm not gonna say I get bored of playing the gangster types- but I worry about people seeing me in the same kind of roles again and again.'' ''It's something that people ..

Lebanon (15)
(Samuel Maoz, 2009, Israel) Yoav Donat, Oshri Cohen, Michael Moshonov. 93 mins
You can see why they made Top Gun about jet fighters. This is set entirely within the confines of an Israeli tank during the 1982 Lebanon war, and it's not much of a recruitment ad. The gimmick is both the movie's strength and its weakness. The space and visibility restrictions make this a neat minimalist thriller and a nervy, unpredictable combat experience, but it's one safely insulated from the questions – and victims – of the real-life conflict. Despite the sweat and grime, you feel like the really dirty stuff is going on elsewhere.
Robin Hood (12A)
(Ridley Scott, 2010, Us) Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Max Von Sydow, Mark Strong. 140 mins
Scott attempts to pull another Gladiator, ditching the familiar tights and tropes and reimagining the legend through a combination of mangled history, epic set pieces and deadly earnest heroism. It's more of a prequel,...
