Liev Schreiber earned his sixth career Golden Globe nomination earlier this week, his fifth straight for his performance as the title character in Showtime’s Ray Donovan. Five seasons later, Schreiber said he feels like he's finally hitting his stride on the show.
"I was very happy to hear about [the nomination]," the 50-year-old actor told Et over the phone after the Golden Globe nominations were announced, adding that he'd hoped his onscreen wife, Paula Malcomson, would break through for her heartbreaking performance this past season. "Sad that we didn’t see Paula['s] name, but I was very grateful."
Season five broke from convention for the hourlong drama, which revolves around Ray (Schreiber), a Boston-bred fixer for the rich and famous and a devoted family man (for the most part), when Ray's wife, Abby (Malcomson), died from cancer. The way the story unfolded -- each episode was told in two different periods of Ray's life: before and after Abby's death --...

The Snarling is new horror comedy from director Pablo Raybould and producer Ben Manning, which has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Saturday 20th January. This will be the official launch of The Snarling (and screening of the release version).
I got chance to ask a few questions about why they decided to write a horror comedy, working several jobs on a small budget production and Easter eggs in the film.
What can we expect from the film?
Pablo: Well, firstly, it has its pre-launch special screening at Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on January 20th at the Park Inn in Southend and this is where the whole thing began. So, what can you expect well… so many things. Comedy – first and foremost. There are also lots of same genre film references in there for those that get them. It was only a matter of time... Since its inception, Fear The Walking Dead has been set in the same dead new world as The Walking Dead. While distance and different timeframes have separated Madison and her family from Rick Grimes and his group of survivors, it was announced in October that we're going to see a character cross over from one series to the other, and now that character has been revealed.
Announced on Talking Dead and the official Twitter account of Fear The Walking Dead, the character of Morgan, played by Lennie James, will appear in Fear The Walking Dead Season 4, and based on his conversation with Chris Hardwick on Talking Dead, he could also be leaving the cast of The Walking Dead (at least temporarily or perhaps permanently). Here's what he had to say about the transition (via EW):

The hardest part for any Great Person of History biopic is convincing us the subjects were ever not destined for that achievement, that decision, that feat of heroism. The movies in this category are inherently canvases saved for the larger-than-life, so the inevitable dip that precedes the glory is more like a human comfort than a genuine shock. It allows us to say, “It almost didn’t happen?” while laying the groundwork for the warm feeling of triumph reinforced. Heroes, they’re just like us! That said, the case of Winston Churchill in the run-up to World War II is truly a remarkable.

Mune: Guardian Of The Moon screens Saturday, Nov. 11 at 11:00am at The Missouri History Museum (5700 Lindell Boulevard) as part of this year’s St. Louis International Film Festival. This is a Free screening.

Then the Guardian of the Moon lured the moon to the Land of Darkness to provide a balance to the sun and supply the world with dreams. The McU is a hive mind. That is, a majority of its entries can come off as flavorless exercises in staying “on brand” at the expense of identity and aesthetic. The desire to assimilate each film into the broader strokes of Kevin Feige’s ongoing theatrical TV show results in risk aversion and a lack of narrative identity — hell, I don’t even know what a “Russo Brothers film” looks like. These are press releases stretched to over two hours, and disguised as movies.
Few directors’ ambitions have survived the churning machine of the studio’s world-building. They fizzle out, get sacrificed at the altar of the McU’s greater connective tissue, or arrive with promise but no follow through. Sterling K. Brown graduated to superstar status after his Emmy-winning turn as Christopher Darden on “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.” Executive producer and director Ryan Murphy remains tight with the star, who has even been advising him recently on how to live a vegan lifestyle.
Brown is busy starring in “This Is Us,” but the two are already discussing ways to work together again. “We’ve talked a lot about it,” Murphy said. “I’m trying to figure out a way to give America what they want, and reunite Sterling and Sarah Paulson. I would love for him to be a part of ‘Five Days at Memorial’ [the Hurricane Katrina-themed “American Crime Story” installment] that we’re doing. I always want to work with Sterling. “Bitterness, really” is Paul Kaye’s explanation of what drove his satirical red-carpet interviewer Dennis Pennis in the nineties. “I’d hit thirty, I’d sort of failed as a musician, I’d failed as an artist I felt at the time.” Ambushing Hollywood’s elite in the persona of a brash, punk nuisance wasn’t Kaye’s first choice for stardom, he admits. “It wasn’t how I expected to forge a career. Of all the things I thought I’d end up doing, it wasn’t that.”

Action thriller Never Let Go is now available on demand so we sat down with actress Angela Dixon to discuss her role in the film.
How did you first get into acting?
It all began at a very young age. I had always wanted to be an actor growing up but I didn’t really think that it could be more than a dream. Then, at the age of 16, I played the part of Barbara Allen in ‘Dark of the Moon’ at college and it appeared that I had some talent. At that point it started to become a reality for me. I studied drama at college, University and finally I went to drama school. So all in all I studied drama and acting for 6 years. Although the real learning starts when you are actually on the job.

But what she’s always wanted to do is direct. For Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson, moving behind the camera wasn’t the sort of career change she envisioned only after years in the business — it was something she grew up doing. Her own opportunities just had to catch up to her first.
“I’ve just made movies my whole life,” Larson recently told IndieWire. “Every summer, I would write and direct a film that I would direct my cousins in. It mostly took place in the garage, and I would just hang up different sheets and use our storage containers as different heights for things. I had a disco ball that I put outside the garage door, and when I turned it on, it meant we were rolling.”
She added, “I guess this has been part of my way of expressing myself for a very long time.”

There is a certain relish to the way Scott Glenn describes a knife. His voice – a sort of Midwestern drawl that has a touch of Pittsburgh flint and a lot of Ketchum, Idaho, where he's called home for decades, in it – stays slow and steady as he talks about some of the various weapons he's been using in his martial-arts training lately. You can tell from the gleam in his eye, however, that the actor is getting a serious kick out detailing his recent discoveries in self-defense cutlery.

Toronto ’17: The Solitary Journey of the Short Filmmaker: An interview with Tiff Short Cuts Programmer Danis Goulet
by Staff
Do you love short films? Find out which international shorts will play ‘Tiff 17 by heading to the Shorts Cuts film page. The Canadian component of Short Cuts will be announced on August 9.
A short film doesn’t need to play by anybody’s rules. It’s the sandbox of filmmaking, that comes with freedom, flexibility, and opportunities to fail. Perhaps this is why the medium has also launched the careers of filmmakers like Paul Thomas Anderson, Jim Jarmusch, Wes Anderson, and many more. Operating through its own niche market (with a smaller production budget, running time, and distribution) and mainly seen at film festivals, shorts deserve the attention of any serious cinephile.

One of the film’s we have our eye on is the Vidya Balan starred Tumhari Sulu. In the contemporary dra-medy Vidya Balan will play the lead, Sulochana, fondly known as Sulu. Sulu lands herself an unexpected job of a beautiful, fun and feisty Rj who anchors a late-night show, known for its voyeuristic quality and semi-adult shenanigans.
Talking about her role Vidya told us, “I play a late night radio jockey. I think that is going to be fun. It is going to see the naughty side of me in that. I can’t wait for that because I think it has been a while since smiled or laughed in a film. I’ve been doing intense stuff for a while.”
The film also stars theatre ace Manav Kaul who will play Sulu’s husband, Neha Dhupia who will essay the role of a radio boss, and Rj Malishka who will make her Bollywood debut with the film as a radio jockey. The quirky slice-of-life comedy, is directed by noted ad filmmaker Suresh Triveni.
After 2 months, the film has wrapped and it seems the cast and crew had an amazing time on set during the shoot of the film. In fact Vidya posted to the director, “Thank you for the most unique, exceptional, blessed, love-filled experience called Tumhari Sulu.”

Joining Transparent for season two, Our Lady J became the first transgender woman in the writers’ room of Amazon’s Emmy-winning series, bolstering creator Jill Soloway’s commitment to telling an authentic story that, while inspired by her transgender parent Carrie, is ultimately shaped by the transgender community onscreen and behind the camera.
A classically trained musician and cabaret performer, Our Lady J participated in a weeklong TV writing workshop Soloway launched to find a transgender writer to join the staff. By the end, Our Lady J, who also appears in season two’s flashback scenes, was hired. “When I walked into the room for the first time, everyone listened to what I had to offer,” she says of not feeling like just a token hire -- often considered a shortsighted solution to increasing diversity on a staff -- but like someone who mattered, who was heard. From the galloping horse to the dancing robotic tools to the passionate embrace of two unfinished lovers, the “Westworld” main title design is a work of beauty. It captures the essence of HBO’s amusement park run amok, re-imagined from the late Michael Crichton. Created by design studio, Elastic, these spectacular titles even surpass last year’s Emmy-winning “The Man in the High Castle.”
The challenge, of course, was doing justice to the sweeping aesthetics and moral tone of the Jonathan Nolan-directed sci-fi/western mashup. “As I learnt more and more about the way the show had been put together, I could see that the bar was going to be high,” said Patrick Clair, Elastic’s creative director. “I loved the design sensibility of the world they were building, and how smart the underlying concepts were.”

Pirates of the Caribbean is a franchise that's existed for the better part of fifteen years. Taking its inspiration from the Disneyland ride of the same name, the film showed a whole new edgier side of Disney that we hadn't seen in a good while. Despite its family friendly image, it managed to tell the tale of a kickass pirate movie, with all the violence and fun that one would expect to see in such a film. Add into that the character of Jack Sparrow, and you had real gold.
The franchise has had four films as of this point, and the latest iteration, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales sees the arrival of a mostly new cast of characters, including that of new leading female, Carina Smyth. Taking on that role is Kaya Scodelario, who is probably best known for Skins and The Maze Runner. We...

Sometimes, TV horror is the perfect medium for a particular kind of story. Perhaps a story that doesn’t rely on effects or sensationalism to affect the viewer; a tale that works in a simple, straightforward way, dealing with all too common emotions experienced by the regular teenage mind. To wit, Summer of Fear (1978) Aka Stranger in Our House, a chiller directed by the late legend Wes Craven based on the bestselling Ya novel of the same name by Lois Duncan (I Know What You Did Last Summer). It’s a breezy thrill ride that also shows Craven could successfully work in the mainstream.

The cult series “Samurai Jack” returns after a nearly 13-year absence with a final story that’s darker, bloodier, and more intense.
That explains why “Jack” has moved from Cartoon Network to Adult Swim as its 10-episode Season 5 premieres this Saturday. The series picks up 50 years later, but the eponymous hero (now sporting a flowing beard and armor and driving a motorcycle) hasn’t aged as a result of being hurled into the dystopian future.
As Jack journeys home, he’s lost in a psychological purgatory and losing his mind. He’s haunted by memories of the past and filled with guilt about abandoning his family. He even has ego-crushing,”Birdman”-like dialogues with himself.
That’s not to suggest that the series has lost its humor. For creator Genndy Tartakovsky, “Jack” continues to incorporate a Hanna-Barbera (where he began his career) influence.
