The most populous city in Canada has appeared on-screen in many different ways over the years.Enemy (2013)
There are many ways in which cities are portrayed in cinema. Sometimes cities are anonymous and nameless, and sometimes cities become characters in the films they are portrayed in. Cities can be merely incidental settings, or the specific locations within a city can be incredibly important both narratively and visually. The people within a city tend to represent the place itself: how they act, how they dress, where they work, how they speak, and what they eat. All of these things can be related to the place they live. Cities are home to an infinite multitude of experiences — people from different places, with different families, different wants and desires and identities.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Lin-Manuel Miranda are two of the most likeable stars in the entertainment business and collaborative partners for the successful new movie Moana. What’s next for Hollywood’s most charming duo? Apparently, it’s a mini-musical about millennials, with YouTuber Meg DeAngelis in the starring role.
Johnson and Miranda have grabbed all the headlines related to Millennials: The Musical, but at the same time, the creative talent associated with Millennials consists mostly of up-and-coming artists, many of whom have ties to the online video community. The project’s director, Scott Brown, is known for web series like Blue Movies and Destroy The Alpha Gammas. Sonya Belousova, who co-wrote the music and lyrics, is the force behind the keys for Player Piano. DeAngelis, the star of Millennials, has 5.5 million subscribers on her YouTube channel, and many other creators (including Flula, who has a small role) join her in the cast.

Noted web series creator Scott Brown is back. When we last heard from the one time Streamy nominee, he was bringing dark humor to the slasher genre with Stockholm. For his next act, Brown is exploring the world of petty, superficial sororities. He is the creative mind behind Destroy The Alpha Gammas, a collegiate musical with an attitude. With its musical heart and young cast, Destroy The Alpha Gammas is immediately reminiscent of Glee, although its trailer is sure to remind each viewer that "you're not in glee club anymore." Instead, the series takes place at a university, where two rival sororities will do everything they can to make each others' lives miserable. I'm expecting the opening scene of West Side Story mixed with a collegiate version of Mean Girls. Actress and pop singer Leah McKendrick wrote the script, and she also stars as Carrie, the leader of the less popular Delta Pi sorority.

We loved Writer/Director Scott Brown's first series, Blue Movies, a slickly-written comedy that ended up nominated for a Streamy Award in 2010. His follow-up, Asylum, wasn't half bad either. Now, Brown has returned with Stockholm, a dark, droll romp about a serial killer's relationship with his potential victim. The series is being hosted on Blip and the first two episodes dropped today. Zach Gold (a frequent Brown actor who got to play the porno version of The Joker in Blue Movies) plays the male lead with newcomer Brittani Noel as his female counterpart

The pyschological drama genre remains a font for indie filmmakers looking to explore deep character arcs without the expectations of some of the pricier genres. Asylum premiered last night in Hollywood at Cinespace, a venue fast becoming the city’s Cbgb’s of web series, to a capacity crowd of supporters. Not a bad foot to start a show off on. The big question however is will this indie have the muster to break through? A week ago I opined that this might be this year’s Compulsions, with its similar genre, release timing and early indie buzz. Now having watched the full six-episode opening season of Asylum, the comp still holds water, meaning we might see a nom or two come awards season here. At the onset, we are taken inside St. Dympna Hospital for the Criminally Insane, a tired, state-funded outfit badly overlooked by any sort of authority.

Hard to believe it’s already been a year since Bernie Su’s twisted character drama Compulsions bowed online. The 8-episode series, which bowed in time to qualify for awards season, netted four Streamy Award nominations and Su took home the Streamy for Best Writing. Now as the final month of 2010 is upon us, another dark indie drama is set to walk on the web stage this month. Asylum, from creator Dan Williams and director Scott Brown (Blue Movies) has already turned heads with its trailer (below) that made it an official selection at this fall’s New York Television Festival (Nytvf) and the Anaheim International Film Festival (Aiff). The apocalyptic end of the world drama is such a played out subgenre that there’s nothing left to do but make fun of it. And if you’re Woody Tondorf making fun of things is what you do best. This is after all the same guy that created one of YouTube’s most popular scripted comedy web series Elevator, that racked up over 20 million views in its 3-year run. Tondorf's latest comedy is aiming to do just that. Apocalypse Wow released their first trailer later yesterday evening, after screening it down at Comic-Con in San Diego last month. As of now the project is just a pilot episode and trailer, produced on what Tondorf says is “a tiny spec budget” in hopes of luring in investors or one of the online studios or networks to pick up the series. Tondorf teamed up with Blue Movies creator Scott Brown, who directed the promo episodes,...

Continuing a busy Monday of news from the world of web series, the New York Television Festival (Nytvf) announced its official selections today for the Manhattan-based festival for independent television heading into its six year. The festival will take place in Manhattan September 20-25 at Tribeca Cinemas and the Sva Theater. Web series are once again increasingly a part of the independent television landscape, with a number of the pilots up for competition in this year’s festival having emerged online or planned for an internet release. Some notable standouts are a new comedy series from 2009 Nytvf winner Al Thompson (Johnny B Homeless) called Baby Daddy Memoirs and Blue Movies’ Scott Brown’s sophomore series Asylum from creator Dan Williams (see trailer above). Also making the cut this year are a number of existing web series like Solo, 9Am Meeting, The Bear, The Cloud and God, Greg & Donny, Copy & Pastry,...

Tucked away in an alley of downtown La, behind two intimidating buildings with "American Apparel" emblazoned on their sides, Central City Studio is hidden away behind a factory facade with a gigantic crane parked in front of it. If I hadn't known I was looking for a production and recognized what I knew to be a grip truck parked near the crane, I wouldn't even be aware there was a fully-functioning hospital set located within the building. Here they were filming Asylum, the new project of Streamy Award-nominated director, Scott Brown. His first series, Blue Movies has now amassed over 2.5 million views and for his follow-up, he's tackling a dramatic dark mystery created by Dan Williams. Williams and Brown were follow USC students, Williams produced Brown's first short film. Tubefilter had a chance to visit the final day of shooting, a planned 14 hour day with a well-oiled crew that was...

Due out in early April, We Are With the Band follows internet blogger Elle and recently unemployed Marci as they dive bottle-first into the Silverlake hipster scene. The series was conceived and produced by Vivian Kerr and Heleya de Barros as an outlet for their frustration at not finding quality roles for women in Hollywood. "I know Heleya's strengths as an actor and I thought I could write something that would showcase her," said Kerr. "I was watching a lot of Peep Show, a British comedy about two male best friends, and I was wondering what a female equivalent of that show would be like. La has such rich fodder for parody and hipsters are such an easy target. It sort of wrote itself." Barros continued, "Wawtb is about finding yourself, finding balance in your life. It's about being done with college, but still having no direction. Having dreams but...

The nominees for the 2010 Streamys were announced today. The Streamys celebrate online television programming and this year they have a fantastic line up of nominees. Last year was the Streamys debut year and the winners included high profile shows such as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the exceptional Battlestar Galactica web series The Face of the Enemy.
This year there is even more competition with some really interesting content now being released on the web rather than through more traditional media routes. Two of my favourites from this year’s nominee list are the excellent Interview Project which is presented by davidlynch.com and the slightly flawed but thoroughly enjoyable Angel of Death, created by Ed Brubaker and starring Zoe Bell, which also received a DVD release last year.
The awards ceremony takes place on April 11th 2010 and the full list of nominees is listed below with handy links...

Awards season for web series is in full stride right now, and now that public submissions for the Streamy Awards have closed, attention of show creators has turned to wooing Academy members who will do much of the tough voting for the top honors in web TV. Two independent series teamed up to host an unofficial 'Academy screening' in Hollywood last night, with comedy Blue Movies and drama The Fall of Kaden teeing up on the big screen at Cinespace. Kicking off the evening, Kaden creators Matt Doubler and Adam Leiphart matched up with Blue Movies creator Scott Brown to show a surprise "For Your Consideration" video (above), poking fun at the precarious business of web series. They tapped the omnipresent Shira Lazar to 'host' the video which stars a smattering of each series' lead actors. The screening theater was packed, with scant standing room space in the back. First...

Stun Creative released the third episode (above), "Crotch Bomb," of their animated spoof web series Obamourage today on Atom, commemorating President Obama's first year in office. The series, created by Brad Roth and Mark Feldstein follows the day-to-day life of President Obama and his cabinet—Rahm, Joe, Hillary, and Bo, the dog—as they all roll, "Obama-style." [Atom.com] Crackle's Woke Up Dead from Electric Farm Entertainment has scored showcase.ca as Canadian online distributor of the comedy web series starring Jon Heder, Krysten Ritter, Josh Gad and Wayne Knight. Woke Up Dead's 22 episodes will roll out on showcase.ca three times a week starting February 1, 2010 through the end of March. [Channel Canada] Blue Movies rolled out a slick-looking Streamy Awards "For Your Consideration" site along with a video (below) showcasing the talent behind the indie comedy series like writer-director Scott Brown, and lead actors Jareb Dauplaise, Beck Bennett and Sascha Alexander.

In a previous life I think I was a fluff girl so I’m kind of sensitive about behind the scenes porno shows. While most of you were laughing it up watching Trey Parker shave his balls in Orgazmo I was strapped into a 94-minute emotional roller coaster ride of painful memories. So what can be expected from Blue Movies, a new web series from creator/director Scott Brown? Well if you don’t have painful and repressed memories of pleasuring the leading man off camera while trying to support three children all under the age of four I think you’ll be getting some pretty fantastically good awesomeness out of this one. Episode 1 (above), “The First Time,” opens with a “pivotal scene” from a special Batman adaptation, “The Dark Night: Full of Hot Freakin’ Orgies,” where an actually well costumed and acted Joker Zack Gold reenacts the famous disappearing pencil scene.
