Toby Stephens has heavily criticised the UK film industry.
The 44-year-old actor - and son of Dame Maggie Smith - has described the disappointment he feels when receiving British scripts.
"Generally, when I get sent British scripts - and this isn't a generalisation - nine times out of ten my heart sinks after about three pages," the Vexed star told BBC News.
"We need to stop trying to imitate America. We need to stop trying to do the same movies over and over: the gangsters and football violence."
He added: "We do these intelligentsia movies about married couples in Hampstead or whatever. I think there's a place for all those things but we can't keep on repeating ourselves."
Stephens explained that his latest project, British sci-fi thriller The Machine, was an exception to the rule.
"This script came through and it blew me away. It's not about football violence, it's not about gangsters,...

E4’s seminal sci-fi dramedy Misfits has finally closed the doors to its community centre for good (or until there’s a movie and/or an American remake) and, while its end didn’t make the impact it may have done a couple of years ago, it’s leaving a massive gap in the television schedules. After five years on the air, the series is still being talked about as being something unique, never looking tired when measured against fresh new shows hoping to ape some of its early success. There’s a reason for this – there are no other shows like it; it doesn’t look as if anyone’s even tried.

Vexed is a modern day British crime solving drama that pits a new detective team Di Jack Armstrong (Toby Stephens) and Di Kate Bishop (Lucy Punch) against some tough cases. It doesn.t help matters move along that these two have no chemistry and spend much of their time arguing about the way to proceed with the investigation. Shown in Britain in 2010, Acorn brings to Us viewers for the first time this well received series. Vexed is a nice twist on the detective duo story, Jack Armstrong is careless, lazy, and out to have a good time, Kate Bishop is dedicated, methodical, and desperately trying to balance work and home life. Neither understands the other, and fireworks...

When Series 3 of the British science fiction comedy drama Misfits came to an end this time last year, it was difficult to imagine what could happen next and which characters would even return if the series were to continue. With the revelation that most of the cast would not be reprising their roles in this new series, and that the series would instead be led by original member Curtis (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett), recent additions Rudy (Joseph Gilgun) and Seth (Matthew McNulty), and new characters Jess (Karla Crome) and Finn (Nathan McMullen), it could either pick up quite suitably, or, more than likely, could go completely downhill. Fortunately, whilst the series will never be as good without its original cast members together, it worked out quite well.

Things are going well for Miranda Raison. Since graduating from the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art around a decade ago she has never had to work outside of acting. A rare thing indeed. When (or if) you think of urban UK film, you may immediately think Noel Clarke. However, while he may be the biggest fish, Clarke isn’t the only one swimming in that pool. Written, directed by and starring Q, Deadmeat is a gritty urban thriller which explores London’s gangland dark underbelly in a chilling tale of revenge killings and betrayal.

A lesser-known property from the late Douglas Adams (creator of The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide To The Galaxy), Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency was nevertheless a novel Adams thought would be easier to film than his revered sci-fi opus. Previously turned into radio plays with Harry Enfield as the gumshoe, BBC4 have decided to put Dirk Gently on-screen for the first time, adapted by in-demand screenwriter Howard Overman (Misfits, Vexed). Stephen Mangan (Green Wing) plays the eponymous sleuth, who believes in “the fundamental interconnectedness of all things”, and applies this theory of quantum mechanics to solve superficially innocuous crimes.
Overman has wisely excised much of the book’s budget-swallowing imagination into something achievable on a frugal budget; bringing the idea down-to-earth as an eccentric cousin to the BBC’s Sherlock update. Purists may grumble this isn’t the Dirk Gently they wanted to see, but it’s more accessible and practicable.

The BBC have debuted the first trailer for their new BBC Four drama based on Douglas Adams’ cult novel, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency.
Anti-hero Dirk Gently operates his eponymous detective agency based on the fundamental interconnectedness of all things. Perpetually broke, hopelessly chaotic and utterly infuriating, most people suspect Dirk is nothing more than a cheap conman. And they might be right – but nevertheless his methods, though unusual, do often produce surprising results. When Dirk sets out to solve an apparently simple and harmless disappearance of a cat from an old lady’s house, he unwittingly uncovers a double murder which, in turn, leads to a host of even more extraordinary events.
Dirk Gently stars Stephen Mangan as the eponymous hero, alongside Darren Boyd (Royal Wedding, Little Dorrit) as his unwitting sidekick Richard Macduff and Helen Baxendale (Cold Feet, Friends) as Richard’s girlfriend Susan in the adaptation by Bafta-winning Howard Overman (Misfits,...

1. Celebrity offspring
It's easy to be envious of second-generation celebrities. Not only do their genes mean that without even trying they look vaguely famous, but they also get an unfair leg-up when it comes to money and contacts. 1. Celebrity offspring
It's easy to be envious of second-generation celebrities. Not only do their genes mean that without even trying they look vaguely famous, but they also get an unfair leg-up when it comes to money and contacts. Oh, if only this had happened while author Douglas Adams was still around to come up with more stories.
BBC4 will air a one off, one hour long adaptation of the Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy author's other classic, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, in their fall / winter season. No cast announced yet but the man behind the adaptation is Howard Overman, who also wrote Misfits and Vexed.
To put it in the most basic terms possible, I adore Dirk Gently. I practice zen navigation on a regular basis and damn if he wasn't right. And I think - in the hands of the right director - the character is by far the most visual and adaptable that Adams ever created. It is certainly a far, far easier road to take Dirk Gently to the screen than it ever was to bring Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox, Arther Dent and the...

Word is that BBC4 will be airing a 60 minute pilot come autumn/winter which is based in part on Douglas Adams first novel in the Dirk Gently series. Written by Howard Overman (creator of Misfits and Vexed), the story revolves around "solving the disappearance of a cat from an old lady’s house". Yes, it's only a pilot but from what BC says, if numbers are big enough they'll be more to come. I hope so. I can remember reading this first book as a teenager and being quite wary as I didn't think it could even remotely live up to Hitchhikers Guide but was more then pleasantly surprised.
For those who've missed this, here's a rundown of the first book via Amazon:
There is a long tradition of Great Detectives, and Dirk Gently does not belong to it. But his search for a missing cat uncovers a ghost, a time traveler,...

The director of Vexed has praised the show's stars. The series focuses on a pair of police detectives played by Toby Stephens and Lucy Punch. Writing on the BBC Comedy Blog, director Matt Lipsey explained that it is difficult to cast characters who are "dysfunctional, neurotic, sexist, quarrelsome, self-righteous and paranoid". "Couple these elements with a need for them to be sexy, bright and warm people you genuinely want to spend time around," he continued. "As you can see, this was going to be more than a little tricky to cast." However, Lipsey described Stephens as a "really refreshing and surprising" choice for the show's character Jack, adding: "He manages to imbue Jack with a likeability by allowing just enough vulnerability to seep out, his arrogance is delivered (more)...

Greenlit Rights, one of Britain’s most high profile producers, has made four staff redundant following the sale of parent company Target Entertainment. The producer is a regular ITV supplier, making Second World War drama Foyle’s War for the network and miniseries Collision. Its latest BBC2 miniseries Vexed, starring Toby Stephens and Lucy Punch, started its three-week run on Sunday. Company founder Jill Green – married to Stormbreaker author Anthony Horowitz, who created Foyle’s War -- left Greenlit a couple of weeks ago. She has told the Guardian that Target failed “to comply with the original terms of our agreement relating to the sale of the business”. Greenlit was excluded from yesterday’s £800,000 sale of Target to theatrical distributor Metrodome. The new owner wanted Greenlit as part of the deal, but couldn’t agree terms. Accountants Bdo Stoy Hayward are administering Greenlit. Green now wants the rights to her back catalogue back.

Anyone who can't face braving Glastonbury to see the Motown legend's Sunday-night set can head to London's Hyde Park for this headlining show. It's likely to be heavy on the hits, but a little too heavy on the audience participation, if complaints from disgruntled punters at Wonder's recent shows are anything to go by. And be warned: Jamiroquai seems to have been enticed out of retirement to provide support. Hyde Park, London W2, 26 June. Box office: 020-7009 3484.

This beloved Scottish festival is prized as much for its atmosphere as its lineup. And they're certainly wheeling out the big hitters this year: Eminem, Muse, Kasabian, Jay-z, Black Eyed Peas, Florence and the Machine, La Roux, Dizzee Rascal and Paolo Nutini,...

Part 1: From A-Team to Cops on screen
The A-team
Fox gets a plan together for a classic remake
Already a work of casting near-perfection – Oskar Schindler! Phil from The Hangover! That half-alien bloke from District 9! A man who legitimately calls himself Quinton "Rampage" Jackson! – July's A-Team movie has the potential to be quite exciting indeed. Provided, of course, that it's got a good director, a trustworthy producer, a keen sense of humour and a female lead who's made more than one good film in her entire life. What? It's directed by Joe "Smokin' Aces" Carnahan, produced in part by Tony Scott, co-stars Jessica Biel and sees itself as a natural successor to the Bourne franchise? Eeek. Still, at least Quinton "Rampage" Jackson sounds promising. He'd better really hate going on those planes,...
