No Compromise
The second episode sees the British Olympic teams building on the success of the Sydney Olympics in 200 and the Athen Olympics in 2004.
The key focus was the National Lottery funding and the priorities were ruthless.
If a sport did not deliver at the Olympics then funding would be slashed. A game of winners and losers.
The second episode talks to some of the movers of the London 2012 Olympic bid. Tony Blair the then Labour Prime Minister very much lead the charge from the front. This was in contrast with the bids launched in the 1980s when Margaret Thatcher the Tory Prime Minister could not even muster the bare minimum of enthusiasm.
Once London were awarded the games. Team GB had to nurture a new generation of talent to be ready for 2012. Tom Daley was plucked as a schoolboy and taken to Beijing 2008.
Yet he was being pushed while still going through puberty and uncertainties associated with being a teenager. The question is was he pushed too much as he was still a child?
It has come to light that swimmers and gymnasts around the world were in effect bullied and abused. Britain could not come out of this with clean hands.
To boost swimming medals, Australian coaches were brought in. The kind who did well for the Australia team. Swimmers were now made to train on Christmas day and given tough love. In Australia, some swimmers are now coming out with horror stories.
What was the true cost of no compromise? The program cannot answer that.
